The main difference is the movement: the vintage Oysterquartz Day-Date is quartz-powered, while current Day-Date 36 and Day-Date 40 models are self-winding mechanical watches. They share the Day-Date name and its day-and-date display, but they belong to different eras and should not be treated as two current versions of the same configuration.
At a glance: quartz versus automatic
| Feature | Oysterquartz Day-Date | Current automatic Day-Date |
|---|---|---|
| Movement | Quartz; specialist historical reporting identifies calibre 5055. | Self-winding mechanical; Rolex identifies calibre 3255 in current Day-Date 36 and 40 models. |
| Era | Vintage, discontinued family; Oysterquartz.net reports its introduction in 1977. | Current Day-Date 36 and 40 family; Rolex introduced calibre 3255 in the Day-Date 40 in 2015 and in the Day-Date 36 in 2019. |
| Power | Battery-powered quartz. A battery-life figure is not established by the cited source. | Approximately 70-hour power reserve, according to Rolex. |
| Case information | Known for an angular case design, but precise dimensions and water resistance should be checked against the specific reference. | Current case sizes are 36 mm and 40 mm; Rolex guarantees water resistance to 100 m (330 ft). |
| Calendar | Day and date display; the cited material does not verify the calibre 5055 quickset operation. | Full weekday display and date. Rolex says the current weekday display is offered in 26 languages; its history attributes double quickset for day and date to calibre 3155. |
What the movement difference means
Oysterquartz: a quartz-powered vintage watch
Oysterquartz.net reports that Rolex introduced its in-house quartz calibres 5035 and 5055, along with Oysterquartz Datejust and Day-Date models, in 1977. It identifies calibre 5055 with the Day-Date. This is specialist historical reporting rather than a current Rolex product specification. Quartz watches are battery-powered; the available information does not establish a battery-life estimate for this model.

Automatic: a self-winding mechanical watch
Current Day-Date 36 and Day-Date 40 models use Rolex calibre 3255. Rolex describes it as self-winding and gives it an approximately 70-hour power reserve. The movement includes a Chronergy escapement, a blue Parachrom hairspring and Paraflex shock absorbers. Those are specifications of the current movement, not of the vintage Oysterquartz.
How the Day-Date developed
Rolex dates the Day-Date’s launch to 1956 and describes it as the first calendar wristwatch to show the weekday spelled out in full in a dial window as well as the date. The day appears at 12 o’clock and the date at 3 o’clock on current models.

- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The automatic Day-Date has used different movements over time. Rolex’s history states: “Calibre 3155 replaced calibre 3055. This self-winding movement included a double quickset function for both the date and the day of the week.” That account concerns calibre 3155; it should not be taken as confirmation of the quickset operation on calibre 5055.
Rolex introduced calibre 3255 in the Day-Date 40 in 2015 and later fitted it to the Day-Date 36 in 2019. The modern automatic models therefore represent an evolving mechanical line, not a direct, unchanged counterpart to the discontinued quartz watch.

Which one fits your priorities?
- Choose the Oysterquartz if you specifically want a vintage quartz Day-Date and value its distinctive angular design. Expect to assess an individual older watch rather than rely on current-model specifications.
- Choose a current automatic Day-Date if you want a currently offered 36 mm or 40 mm model with calibre 3255 and Rolex’s stated approximately 70-hour power reserve.
- Focus on the exact watch if your decision depends on dimensions, originality, condition, documentation or servicing. Those details can vary by vintage reference and individual example.
What to verify when buying an Oysterquartz Day-Date
Start with the reference and confirm that the watch and its movement match the documentation available for that specific example. Do not infer a vintage watch’s dimensions or water resistance from current Day-Date specifications.

Sources and specification boundaries
Rolex’s current model information covers the present Day-Date 36 and 40, not every vintage Oysterquartz reference. The Oysterquartz introduction date and calibre 5055 identification above are attributed to specialist secondary reporting because the cited official Rolex pages do not provide a dedicated Oysterquartz Day-Date history.
