The leaks were broadly right about the design, but wrong about the name. May 2024 renders described a rumored “Galaxy Watch 7 Ultra” with a chunky, rounded-square—or squircle—case wrapped around a circular screen. Samsung announced that design on July 10, 2024, as the Galaxy Watch Ultra, separately from the standard Galaxy Watch7.
That distinction matters: Samsung did not launch a product called the Galaxy Watch 7 Ultra, and the leaked renders did not establish every specification. They did, however, accurately preview several of the released watch’s most conspicuous features: a 47 mm-class body, a thick rugged profile, three side buttons, and a new band connection.
What the “Galaxy Watch 7 Ultra” leaks showed
The central visual leak came from CAD-based renders published in May 2024. They depicted a watch that looked unlike Samsung’s familiar round-bodied Galaxy Watch designs: the outer case was broadly square with softened corners, while the display inside it remained circular.
That combination was the key detail. It was not a square smartwatch display. The screen retained Samsung’s circular watch identity, but the surrounding titanium-colored housing added a cushion-like frame. In practical terms, the watch looked larger, more industrial, and more adventure-oriented than the regular Galaxy Watch line.

The leaked dimensions were approximately 47 × 47.4 × 16.4 mm. Those numbers were not official specifications at the time, but they correctly suggested a watch considerably larger and thicker than the preceding Galaxy Watch6 Classic. The renders also showed three physical buttons on the right side and an unusual connection between the case and strap.

The name changed before launch
The biggest correction is the product name. Leak coverage commonly called the device the Galaxy Watch 7 Ultra, implying an Ultra-branded version of the Galaxy Watch7. At Galaxy Unpacked in Paris on July 10, 2024, Samsung instead introduced two distinct products: Galaxy Watch7 and Galaxy Watch Ultra.
So the accurate retrospective is:

The squircle case was real, but the screen stayed circular
Samsung’s own design explanation describes the Galaxy Watch Ultra as preserving its “signature circle” while adding a titanium cushion frame. That is the clearest way to understand the design: the watch has a squarish exterior for visual protection and structural presence, but the active display remains round.
This gives the Ultra a different visual balance from both a conventional round watch and a rectangular smartwatch. The case corners extend beyond the circular display, creating room for a more substantial-looking exterior without changing the circular interface language used by Galaxy Watches.

The final case is made from titanium, according to Samsung’s product information and teardown material. The display’s advertised peak brightness reaches 3,000 nits, a figure intended to improve legibility in bright outdoor conditions. Those are launch-confirmed specifications; they were not established by the original renders.
Samsung lists the official watch as a 47 mm Galaxy Watch Ultra. The company’s design material provides additional context on the cushion frame and circular display at Samsung Design.
The third button prediction was one of the strongest leaks
The leaked renders clearly showed a third central button on the right side of the case. Its exact purpose was uncertain in the early coverage, and the renders did not prove how it would behave. In particular, reports discussing whether the button would rotate or act like a crown should not be treated as confirmed specifications.
The released watch did include the extra control. Samsung calls it the Quick Button, positioned alongside the standard Home and Back buttons and distinguished by an orange accent. It gives the Ultra a more equipment-like control layout than Samsung’s conventional two-button watches.
The important fact-check distinction is therefore simple: the leak correctly predicted three physical buttons, but not every detail about their operation or software behavior.
The new band connection also made it into the final product
The renders suggested that Samsung would move away from traditional exposed lugs and attach the band directly to the redesigned case. That prediction held up. Galaxy Watch Ultra uses a dynamic lug system, giving the strap connection a distinct appearance and making the Ultra feel like a separate product family rather than a larger Galaxy Watch7.

There is a practical consequence for owners: Galaxy Watch Ultra bands are not compatible with other Galaxy Watch models, and ordinary Galaxy Watch7 20 mm bands should not be assumed to fit the Ultra. Samsung lists three Ultra band families—Marine, Trail, and Peakform—for different kinds of use.
