They arrived through One UI 6 Watch, Samsung’s software layer built on Wear OS 5—not through Wear OS 5 universally across every smartwatch. The rollout began with Galaxy Watch7 and Galaxy Watch Ultra in July 2024 and later expanded to several older Galaxy Watch models.
What Samsung actually announced
Samsung’s May 29, 2024 announcement focused on “motivational health”: using sleep, activity and heart-rate data to provide more useful daily guidance. It was not an announcement of a ChatGPT-style general-purpose assistant running on the watch.

The original announcement described AI-assisted features involving energy, sleep, exercise and personalized recommendations. Samsung later delivered the experience through One UI 6 Watch, its Samsung-specific interface for Galaxy Watch devices running on Google’s Wear OS platform.

| Layer | What it does |
|---|---|
| Wear OS 5 | Google’s underlying smartwatch operating system. |
| One UI 6 Watch | Samsung’s watch interface and feature layer built on Wear OS 5. |
| Samsung Health | The companion app and data platform used for many health insights. |
| Galaxy AI | Samsung’s branding for AI-assisted features and recommendations. |
This distinction matters. A non-Samsung Wear OS 5 watch does not automatically receive Samsung’s Galaxy AI features. Availability depends on the Galaxy Watch model, One UI 6 Watch, Samsung Health, the paired phone, account requirements, market and sometimes regulatory approval.

What the Galaxy Watch AI features do
Energy Score
Energy Score is a daily wellness score intended to indicate readiness by combining factors such as sleep, activity, sleeping heart rate and sleeping heart-rate variability. Samsung presents it as a way to understand patterns and adjust daily habits.
It is not a medical measurement or diagnosis. It also requires usable recent data, a compatible Samsung Galaxy AI phone in Samsung’s stated implementation, Samsung Health and a Samsung account.
Personalized health recommendations
Samsung described recommendations designed to help users improve health habits based on collected data. These should be treated as general wellness guidance, not individualized medical advice.
Sleep analysis and sleep-apnea screening
The enhanced sleep analysis uses measurements including movement during sleep, sleep latency, heart rate and respiratory rate. The broader One UI 6 Watch rollout also included sleep-apnea detection on supported devices and in supported markets.

- TRACK HEALTH PATTERNS¹ IN YOUR SLEEP WITH VITALS²: Stay aware of the subtle changes in your body with Vitals¹–it tracks health metrics while you sleep, catches shifts from your usual patterns, and provides tailored guidance based on the insights.²
- A PERSONALIZED COACH FOR YOUR FITNESS GOALS: Whether you're building endurance for a long trek or training to build muscle, Fitness Index³ delivers tailored guidance based on your fitness level goals. Finally, train smarter with your fitness watch.
- EVERYDAY AI ASSISTANCE, SIMPLIFIED: With the Galaxy Watch9, you can just raise your wrist, start talking naturally and get instant AI assistance⁴—no wake phrase needed. This smart watch won’t slow you down.
- ONE PERSONALIZED SCORE TO KNOW YOUR HEART BETTER: Instead of checking multiple metrics separately, track the single Heart Health Score⁵ based on sleep time, BMI, activity and vascular load to stay aware of your wellness.
- TRACK YOUR NIGHTS. OWN YOUR DAYS: Galaxy Watch9 gives you personalized recommendations and habit-building guidance with Advanced Sleep Coaching.⁶ Plus, Bedtime Guidance⁷ helps you find your optimal bedtime so you can wake up feeling refreshed.
Sleep-apnea detection is a screening feature, not a diagnosis. Regulatory status, supported phones, operating-system requirements and availability vary by country. A concerning result should be discussed with a qualified healthcare professional.
Workout tools
One UI 6 Watch added or expanded practical fitness features including:
- Race: compares current and previous running or cycling performance.
- Workout Routine: lets users combine exercises into personalized routines.
- Additional fitness guidance and health insights based on activity data.
These features are better understood as structured fitness tools than as an unrestricted AI personal trainer.

AI-powered suggested replies
When paired with a compatible Galaxy smartphone, the watch can generate suggested responses to messages. This is a connected-device feature, not proof that every AI function operates independently on the watch.

Which Galaxy Watches received One UI 6 Watch?
Galaxy Watch7 and Galaxy Watch Ultra launched on July 10, 2024, as Samsung’s first watches with Wear OS 5. Samsung announced the wider One UI 6 Watch rollout beginning November 19, 2024.
| Watch family | Software context | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Galaxy Watch7 and Watch Ultra | Launched with Wear OS 5 and One UI 6 Watch | Original flagship implementation, with newer hardware. |
| Galaxy Watch6 and Watch6 Classic | Received One UI 6 Watch | Feature availability can vary by market and phone. |
| Galaxy Watch5 and Watch5 Pro | Received the update in stages | They are not automatically equivalent to Watch7 or Ultra. |
| Galaxy Watch4 and Watch4 Classic | Included in the rollout | Some features depend more heavily on phone, region or sensors. |
| Galaxy Watch FE | Included in Samsung’s rollout announcement | Verify support feature by feature. |
Eligibility for the software update does not mean every watch receives every feature identically. Sensor hardware, paired-phone compatibility, country, carrier and app versions all matter.
Phone, app and account requirements
- Android is required: Galaxy Watch4 and newer Wear OS Galaxy Watches cannot be set up with an iPhone.
- Samsung Health is important: many health insights are delivered through the Samsung Health app rather than the watch alone.
- A Samsung account may be required: Samsung specifically lists one for Energy Score in its rollout documentation.
- A compatible Galaxy phone may be necessary: some Energy Score and AI-related features require a Samsung Galaxy AI phone.
- Medical features have extra limits: operating-system, device, country and regulatory requirements can apply separately.
Users with a non-Samsung Android phone may get basic Galaxy Watch functionality but lose access to some Samsung Health Monitor or Galaxy AI-dependent features. Users with an iPhone cannot configure these Wear OS Galaxy Watch models at all.
Is the AI processed on the watch?
Samsung’s announcements describe AI-powered experiences but do not establish that all processing happens locally on the watch. Depending on the feature, the experience may rely on Samsung Health data, a paired smartphone, a Samsung account or connected services.

- BUILT TO PERFORM. DESIGNED TO IMPRESS: Show off your style with an iconic design that blends tradition with cutting-edge innovation.¹ A brighter screen makes everything easy to see, and a rotating bezel gives you access to your favorite apps
- YOUR EVERY COMMAND, RIGHT ON YOUR WRIST: Get a little extra help with day-to-day tasks. Galaxy Watch 8 Classic features a personal AI assistant¹ that helps you get things done hands-free. Simply speak the command and your Watch makes it happen
- UNLOCK THE SECRETS TO BETTER SLEEP: When you get good sleep, it feels like anything is possible. Start each day with more energy and better focus using Advanced Sleep Coaching² - improved with even more ways to help you sleep smarter
- QUICK UPDATES, AT A GLANCE: Get updates, select apps and more with Now Bar³,⁴ and an improved user experience. Now Bar conveniently puts the info you use the most - like weather, news and more - right on your main Watch screen
“Galaxy AI” should therefore not be read as a guarantee of fully on-device AI. It describes Samsung’s feature experience, not one universal processing architecture.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do existing owners need a new watch?
Usually, no—not solely to get the original One UI 6 Watch health features. Owners of the Galaxy Watch4, Watch5 or Watch6 should first check for the update before considering a purchase.
- Update the Galaxy Wearable app and Samsung Health.
- Open the Galaxy Wearable app and check Watch settings → Watch software update → Download and install.
- Make sure the watch has adequate battery and storage, and keep the phone connected during the update.
- After updating, confirm Samsung account sign-in and review Samsung Health permissions and compatibility notices.
A new Galaxy Watch is more defensible if you want newer sensors, better performance, longer expected support, a larger battery or features tied specifically to Watch7 or Watch Ultra hardware. Software updates do not make an older watch identical to a newer model.

The update is not visible
Samsung uses staged rollouts, and timing can vary by country, carrier, model and paired smartphone. Other possible causes include an incompatible phone, outdated apps, insufficient battery or storage, or a different software branch already installed.

Energy Score is missing
Check the watch model, Samsung Health version, Samsung account status and paired-phone compatibility. The score may also require enough recent sleep and activity data; it should not be expected immediately after setup.
You expected a chatbot
The 2024 announcement centered on health insights, recommendations, sleep analysis, workout tools and suggested replies. It did not announce a general-purpose conversational assistant for Wear OS 5. Later AI assistants and newer watch software should not be retroactively attributed to this announcement.
What happened after Wear OS 5?
The original story is now historical. Samsung’s later Galaxy Watch8 generation moved to Wear OS 6 and One UI 8 Watch, while newer Samsung Health AI capabilities belong to later software generations. That makes “AI coming in Wear OS 5” an outdated headline unless it is clearly presented as a 2024 announcement.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe accurate summary is narrower: Samsung announced Galaxy AI for Galaxy Watch, implemented it through One UI 6 Watch on top of Wear OS 5, and later extended much of that experience to older eligible Galaxy Watches. The feature set was never universal across all Wear OS 5 watches, nor entirely independent of Samsung phones, Samsung Health and regional restrictions.
