Samsung’s Galaxy Watch8 redesign is more than a cosmetic refresh: the company has replaced the traditional round outer case with a rounded-square “cushion design,” while keeping the display circular. The new shape appears on the regular Galaxy Watch8 and Galaxy Watch8 Classic, and gives Samsung’s lineup a visual link to the Galaxy Watch Ultra.
Samsung introduced the Galaxy Watch8 and Watch8 Classic on July 9, 2025, with general availability beginning July 25, 2025. As of September 2026, the U.S. MSRP starts at $349.99 for the 40mm Bluetooth Galaxy Watch8; the Watch8 Classic starts at $499.99.

The short answer: the case changed, not the screen
Samsung calls the new exterior a “cushion design”. In practical terms, it is a rounded-square or “squircle” case surrounding a familiar circular watch display.

That distinction matters. The Galaxy Watch8 is not a square smartwatch like an Apple Watch. Its screen remains round, but the case has more pronounced rounded corners and a broader, squarer silhouette. The regular Watch8 uses the design in a lightweight, minimalist form, while the Watch8 Classic combines it with stainless steel, a rotating bezel, and a new Quick Button.

The approach also creates a common design language across Samsung’s current watches. The cushion shape first appeared on the Galaxy Watch Ultra and now extends to the mainstream Watch8 models. The 2025 Ultra refresh retains its established rugged 47mm case rather than receiving a completely new exterior.
Samsung says the redesign is intended to improve stability, comfort, and sensor contact—not merely to make the watch look different. Those are Samsung’s design objectives, however, not proof that every wrist will find the new shape more comfortable.
Galaxy Watch8: a thinner, lighter interpretation
The regular Galaxy Watch8 is available in 40mm and 44mm sizes, with an Armor Aluminum case in Graphite or Silver. Both sizes are 8.6mm thick, and Samsung says the design is 11% thinner than previous Galaxy Watches.

Both models use Sapphire Crystal for display protection and offer up to 3,000 nits of peak brightness. Samsung describes the brightness improvement as up to 50% over earlier models; that comparison is a Samsung claim, while 3,000 nits is the stated peak figure.
The most important structural change is the Dynamic Lug System. The revised strap connection is designed to bring the watch and its rear health sensors closer to the wrist. Samsung says the reworked internal layout and lug design help the watch sit more naturally and maintain better skin contact during health tracking and workouts.
Galaxy Watch8 Classic: the traditional controls return
The Watch8 Classic is not simply a regular Watch8 with a different finish. It has a stainless-steel 46mm case, a physical rotating bezel, a new Quick Button, and twice the storage of the standard model.

The rotating bezel is the Classic’s defining feature. It provides a tactile way to scroll through menus, notifications, and tiles without covering the display with a finger. A 3D Hall sensor is associated with the bezel hardware.
The new Quick Button provides another physical shortcut. It can launch apps, start workouts, or access routines, depending on how it is configured. Together, the bezel and button give the Classic a more conventional-watch feel than the touch-focused regular Watch8.
There is a substantial size and weight trade-off. At 10.6mm thick and 63.5g without its band, the Classic is far heavier than the 30g 40mm Watch8 or 34g 44mm Watch8. It is therefore a better fit for buyers who specifically want stainless steel and physical controls—not for someone simply looking for the lightest new Galaxy Watch.
Why Samsung changed the shape
The redesign appears to serve two purposes. First, it gives the Galaxy Watch family a more unified identity by extending the Ultra’s cushion-shaped case to the mainstream models. Second, Samsung has used the additional case and lug redesign to address how the watch sits on the wrist.
Samsung’s design explanation emphasizes three related goals:
- More stable positioning: the revised case and lug arrangement are intended to reduce movement on the wrist.
- Closer sensor contact: the Dynamic Lug System is designed to reduce the gap between the watch back and skin.
- Greater comfort: the strap connection is intended to follow the wrist more naturally.
These changes may be meaningful for sleep tracking and exercise, when a watch can shift or lose consistent contact. But comfort is highly dependent on wrist shape, strap tension, case size, and personal preference. Samsung’s material establishes the design rationale; it does not independently demonstrate a universal comfort or accuracy improvement.

The redesign comes with substantial hardware upgrades
The new case is only part of the Watch8 story. The series also moves to Samsung’s Exynos W1000 processor, built on a 3nm process, with 2GB of RAM across the listed Watch8 models.
- Up to 3,000-nit displays
- Sapphire Crystal protection
- Dual-frequency L1+L5 GPS
- 5ATM water resistance
- IP68 dust and water resistance
- MIL-STD-810H certification
- Bluetooth/Wi-Fi and LTE variants
- 32GB storage on Watch8 and 64GB on Watch8 Classic
Samsung also ships the watches with Wear OS 6 and One UI 8 Watch. The software introduces or emphasizes Multi-Info Tiles, the Now Bar, redesigned notifications, and a more personalized wellness experience.
Health and AI features are part of the larger redesign
Samsung has positioned the Watch8 family around personalized wellness rather than a simple specification upgrade. Highlighted features include:
- Bedtime Guidance: uses sleep data to suggest a bedtime. Samsung says it requires three days of sleep analysis before generating guidance.
- Vascular Load: monitors changes associated with vascular stress during sleep.
- Antioxidant Index: provides a wellness-oriented estimate based on Samsung’s supported measurements.
- Running Coach: creates a running program after a running-level test.
- High Stress Alert: can flag elevated stress conditions.
- Mindfulness Tracker: supports guided wellness and reflection routines.
- Energy Score: combines supported activity, sleep, and recovery indicators into a daily score.
- Gemini: provides voice-based assistance when the paired phone, account, language, software, and internet connection meet the requirements.
These are general wellness and fitness tools, not medical diagnosis or treatment. Feature availability can vary by country, carrier, paired smartphone, software version, Samsung account, and Samsung Health support. An Android phone that can pair with the watch may not provide every Samsung-specific function.
Band compatibility requires checking
The Dynamic Lug System changes how Watch8 bands attach. Owners should not assume that a band from a Galaxy Watch6 or Watch7 will fit correctly simply because the case sizes use familiar labels such as 40mm or 44mm.
Before reusing an older band, verify compatibility for the exact watch model and band type. Samsung sells Watch8 bands separately, but selection and availability vary by market. The safest assumption is that older bands are not automatically universal unless Samsung specifically confirms compatibility for the combination you intend to use.

- BUILT TO PERFORM. DESIGNED TO IMPRESS: Show off your style with an iconic design that blends tradition with cutting-edge innovation.¹ A brighter screen makes everything easy to see, and a rotating bezel gives you access to your favorite apps
- YOUR EVERY COMMAND, RIGHT ON YOUR WRIST: Get a little extra help with day-to-day tasks. Galaxy Watch 8 Classic features a personal AI assistant¹ that helps you get things done hands-free. Simply speak the command and your Watch makes it happen
- UNLOCK THE SECRETS TO BETTER SLEEP: When you get good sleep, it feels like anything is possible. Start each day with more energy and better focus using Advanced Sleep Coaching² - improved with even more ways to help you sleep smarter
- QUICK UPDATES, AT A GLANCE: Get updates, select apps and more with Now Bar³,⁴ and an improved user experience. Now Bar conveniently puts the info you use the most - like weather, news and more - right on your main Watch screen
Compatibility: Android only, with feature caveats
Samsung’s specifications describe the Watch8 series as compatible with Android 12 or later phones with more than 1.5GB of memory. Setup requires a smartphone that supports Google Mobile Services. LTE models also require a compatible carrier plan; a Bluetooth model cannot be converted into an LTE model later.

Galaxy Watches can work with non-Samsung Android phones, but feature parity is not guaranteed. Which Galaxy Watch should you buy?
Choose the regular Galaxy Watch8 if you want:
- The lightest and thinnest Watch8 design
- A sportier, less traditional appearance
- A choice between 40mm and 44mm cases
- The lowest entry price in the new series
- The Watch8’s brighter display, newer processor, and wellness features without paying Classic pricing
Choose the Watch8 Classic if you want:
- A physical rotating bezel
- A stainless-steel case and traditional watch styling
- The Quick Button
- 64GB of storage
- A larger, heavier watch and are comfortable paying a premium for its controls and construction
Consider the Galaxy Watch7 if you want:
The older, rounder exterior or find a significant discount. Samsung’s June 2026 MSRP sheet lists the 40mm Bluetooth Watch7 at $249.99 and the 44mm Bluetooth model at $279.99, before any retailer discounts. The Watch7 may be the better value if you do not need the Watch8’s cushion case, 3,000-nit display, newer processor, or Watch8-focused software features. See Samsung’s Watch7 product family page.
Consider the Galaxy Watch Ultra if you want:
A rugged outdoor watch, titanium construction, and the largest battery capacity in Samsung’s lineup. The Ultra retains its broad 47mm cushion-style case and carries a U.S. MSRP of $649.99 according to Samsung’s June 2026 pricing sheet. It is a poor fit for buyers seeking a discreet or lightweight traditional watch. See the Galaxy Watch Ultra buying page.
What the new look means for Galaxy Watch buyers
Samsung is not abandoning round smartwatches. Instead, it is changing the outer case while preserving the circular screen and familiar watch interface. The regular Watch8 is the lighter, sportier expression of that idea; the Classic adds stainless steel and physical controls but is much thicker and heavier.

The case, lug system, processor, display brightness, GPS hardware, software, and wellness features all move forward. Whether it is an improvement depends on your priorities: buyers who want a lighter watch and updated hardware may welcome the new shape, while traditional-watch fans may prefer the Classic’s bezel—or a discounted Watch7’s rounder exterior.
For Android users, the key decision is not simply whether the squircle looks better. It is whether the Watch8’s new fit strategy and broader feature package outweigh the higher price, uncertain band reuse, and the Classic’s added weight. iPhone owners should look elsewhere; the Galaxy Watch8 is not an iOS alternative.
