Whether it is good value depends on the price and condition in your market: Seiko’s Portugal product page displays EUR 900.00, while the familiar $1,500 framing comes from historical review coverage, not a verified current US price.
What the SPB041J1 is
Seiko identifies the reference as SPB041J1, also shown as SPB041, in its Presage collection. It pairs a stainless-steel case with a crocodile leather band and a mechanical automatic movement that can also be wound by hand. Its defining display features are a date hand and a power-reserve indicator, giving it more information on the dial than a simple three-hand dress watch.
Seiko’s Portugal product page lists the watch at EUR 900.00. That is a regional displayed price, not evidence of a current US asking price or the price a buyer will actually pay. The $1,500 framing belongs to historical review coverage; Monochrome reported a review-era price of 899 euros, while Time+Tide used “a lot of watch for 1500” in its article title. Those figures come from different publications, currencies or periods and should not be treated as interchangeable current prices. Movement and what its specifications mean
Seiko specifies calibre 6R27, with automatic and manual winding, 29 jewels, stop-seconds and an approximately 45-hour power reserve. The reserve indicator gives a visual estimate of remaining stored energy; the date hand points to the date rather than displaying it in a conventional window. Stop-seconds allows the seconds hand to halt when the crown is pulled to set the time.

The manufacturer’s stated precision is +25 to -15 seconds per day. That is a specification range, not a result from an independent accuracy test of this watch. Actual timekeeping can vary with the individual movement, its condition, how it is worn and how it is positioned when off the wrist. If close timekeeping matters, assess the specific example rather than assuming it will perform at the stated limit.
Seiko’s specification and product details are on its SPB041J1 product page. Monochrome describes the movement as running at 4 Hz and notes that the rotor can be seen through the sapphire caseback; those are observations from its review, not new tests. Monochrome’s review.
Case, crystal and wearability
Seiko lists a 40.5 mm case diameter, 13.1 mm thickness and 47.8 mm top-to-bottom measurement. These dimensions suggest a substantial profile for a dress-oriented watch, especially its thickness, but fit is personal and depends on wrist shape and preference. The stated top-to-bottom length is useful when considering whether the case may extend beyond the wrist.

The crystal is curved sapphire with an inner anti-reflective treatment. Sapphire is a practical specification for scratch resistance, while the curved profile contributes to the watch’s traditional appearance. Seiko also specifies 10 bar water resistance. That rating is not a result of an independent water test, and it does not establish the condition of a particular used watch or its seals.

Strap and clasp
The manufacturer lists a crocodile leather band, a three-fold clasp with a safety button and a 20 mm lug distance. The lug measurement makes a 20 mm replacement strap the starting point when shopping, but confirm the replacement’s length and how it interfaces with the clasp before ordering. A strap’s nominal width alone does not guarantee compatibility.

Is it good value at $1,500?
The evidence does not establish that $1,500 is the SPB041J1’s current US price. It is therefore more useful to judge the watch against the actual offer in front of you—taking account of whether it is new or used, what warranty or support is included, and the seller’s condition description—than to treat the historical title price as a current benchmark.
At any asking price, the appeal is clearest if you want the 6R27’s combination of date and power-reserve displays, a sapphire crystal, a leather band and a classic Seiko Presage design. The trade-offs to weigh are the manufacturer’s relatively broad stated precision range, the 13.1 mm thickness, and the fact that the listed water rating and specifications do not replace an inspection of a used watch. No independent accuracy, water-resistance, durability or servicing-cost tests are established here.

For context, Seiko’s SPB401 is a separate limited-edition Presage model that also uses calibre 6R27; Seiko’s 2023 US launch article stated a $1,250 MSRP. The SPB471J1 is another distinct Presage model, with calibre 6R5J and a stated 72-hour reserve; Seiko’s US page displays $1,125.
