The Seiko Presage SPB359J1 is a limited-edition automatic watch inspired by the Laurel, the wristwatch Seikosha began producing in 1913. Announced in December 2022 for release in January 2023, it pairs period-inspired details—including an enamel dial, onion crown and blued hands—with Seiko’s Caliber 6R27. Production was limited to 2,500 pieces.
How the SPB359J1 connects to the Laurel
Seiko describes the Laurel as Japan’s first wristwatch. Seikosha began producing it in 1913, and Seiko says the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers designated it a Mechanical Engineering Heritage in 2014. The SPB359 was created for the 110th anniversary of Seiko’s wristwatch history, translating selected Laurel design cues into a modern Presage.
The tribute is expressed through the watch’s round case, large onion crown, Arabic numerals and the distinctive treatment of the number four. The white enamel dial and retro-styled blued hands reinforce its historical character. The caseback is marked “Limited Edition” and carries an individual number.
Movement and dial functions
The watch uses Seiko’s automatic Caliber 6R27, which runs at 28,800 vibrations per hour, or eight beats per second. Seiko specifies 29 jewels and a 45-hour power reserve. The dial displays the remaining power reserve at nine o’clock and the date at six o’clock.

Original release and launch prices
Seiko announced the SPB359 on December 13, 2022, for availability from January 2023 at select retail partners. The limited run was set at 2,500 pieces. Seiko’s US announcement listed a launch retail price of $1,800; its French announcement listed a recommended retail price of €1,900. These are region-specific prices published at launch, not current offers or estimates of resale value.
Because the model was announced as a limited edition, present-day availability may vary. The available information does not establish current inventory, seller status or transaction prices. Who the SPB359J1 may suit
The SPB359J1 is most distinctive for someone drawn to Seiko’s early wristwatch history and to the particular combination of enamel, Arabic numerals, blued hands and a compact 37.5 mm case. Its 5-bar water resistance and deer-leather strap are practical details to weigh alongside its dress-oriented historical styling; the published specification does not make it a high-water-resistance sports watch.
