The name “1968 Heritage Diver’s GMT” covers several Seiko Prospex references, not one watch. Seiko announced the SPB509 in March 2025 as a 60th-anniversary limited edition; its current US lineup separately lists the standard SPB519. Both have a 6R54 GMT movement, 42 mm cases and 300-meter diver’s water resistance, but their edition status, dial designs and prices differ.
Which Seiko 1968 Heritage Diver’s GMT is this?
The 2025 anniversary launch is the SPB509, announced in a run of 6,000 pieces. It is distinct from the SPB519, a standard model listed on Seiko’s current US product page. The two references should not be treated as alternate names for the same edition.
Seiko’s US listing for the SPB519 shows a silvery white dial and blue ceramic bezel. The other current US reference, limited SPB534, has a black ceramic bezel with gold accents and is listed as available through select Seiko Boutiques. Seiko lists that edition at 500 pieces. These are separate designs and releases within the broader 1968 Heritage Diver’s GMT family.

Specifications and prices are manufacturer-published figures, not independent test results. The SPB509’s USD 1,750 figure is its recommended US retail price at launch, not the current SPB519 price. Seiko’s March 6, 2025 release said price and specifications could change. What the 6R54 GMT function does
The 6R54 is an automatic movement with a separately adjustable 24-hour GMT hand. That hand can track a second time zone while the main timekeeping hands remain undisturbed. Seiko’s March 6, 2025 press release describes it this way: “The GMT hand of the latter can be set independently without interrupting the other hands, allowing the wearer to see, at a glance, the time in a second time zone.” Seiko specifies approximately 72 hours of power reserve for the movement.
Case size and water resistance across the family
Seiko specifies the SPB509 at 42.0 mm in diameter and 13.3 mm thick, with 300-meter diver’s water resistance. The current SPB519 listing gives those same measurements and rating, and additionally specifies a 48.6 mm lug-to-lug length. These are published specifications; they do not establish independent performance, comfort or durability results.

- Item Shape: Round
- View the movement: Mechanical automatic (with hand winding)
- Waterproof depth: 200.0 meters
The 300-meter figure does not apply to every watch in the 1968 Heritage GMT family. Seiko’s 2023 page for the SPB381 and SPB383 GMT models lists 200-meter water resistance, while the 2025 SPB509 announcement specifies 300 meters. Check the reference number rather than assuming a family-wide rating.
How the GMT connects to Seiko’s 1968 diver
Seiko describes the original 1968 diver as a high-beat automatic watch with a one-piece case rated to 300 meters, a rotating bezel and a screw-down crown at 4 o’clock. The company also recounts that Japanese mountaineers Naomi Uemura and Teruo Matsuura carried the historic watch during their 1970 Mount Everest ascent; that is Seiko’s account of the watch’s history.

The GMT line has evolved rather than retaining one universal specification. Seiko’s 2023 SPB381/SPB383 family page describes modern reinterpretations with an independently adjustable GMT hand, 72-hour operation, ceramic bezel and 200-meter rating. The 2025 anniversary SPB509 raises the stated water-resistance rating to 300 meters.

Seiko’s March 2025 announcement said the SPB509 would be sold through Seiko Boutiques and select retail stores worldwide. Seiko’s product pages provide retailer or store routes, but listings and stock can vary by location. Confirm the exact reference, seller, regional price and availability on the relevant listing before purchasing; an edition quantity or launch price does not establish that a watch remains in stock or is being sold at that amount.
