Seiko’s SRQ047 and SRQ049 are not inexpensive vintage reissues. They are substantial, modern Prospex mechanical chronographs that borrow the dial language of Seiko’s early-1970s sports timers and pair it with the automatic 8R48 caliber, sapphire crystal, a refined stainless-steel case and bracelet, and a higher enthusiast-oriented price.
Announced on November 21, 2023, the two watches share nearly all of their technical specifications. The regular-production SRQ047 is the straightforward panda-style choice; the SRQ049 is a darker blue-gray, 100th Anniversary limited edition restricted to 1,000 pieces and supplied with an additional black calf-leather strap.
SRQ047 versus SRQ049: the short version
The watches are mechanically and dimensionally very closely related. The key distinctions are visual and collectible rather than performance-based:
| Feature | SRQ047 | SRQ049 |
|---|---|---|
| Production status | Regular production | Limited to 1,000 pieces |
| Dial | Silver-colored panda dial with contrasting sub-dials | Dark blue-gray dial with silver-white sub-dials |
| Anniversary designation | No | Seiko 100th Anniversary model |
| Straps supplied | Stainless-steel bracelet | Stainless-steel bracelet plus black calf-leather strap with folding clasp |
| U.S. launch MSRP | $2,500 | $2,700 |
| Movement | Seiko Caliber 8R48 automatic chronograph | |
| Case size | 42.0 mm diameter; 14.6 mm thick; 49.5 mm lug-to-lug | |
That makes the SRQ047 the more direct purchase for someone who wants the design without a stated production limit. The SRQ049 is the more distinctive and collectible proposition on paper because of its 1,000-piece limitation, anniversary connection, individually serial-numbered case back, darker dial, and second factory-supplied strap. None of those differences, however, guarantees future resale performance.

A modern interpretation of Seiko’s 1970s chronograph language
The styling references Seiko’s sports-chronograph history without reproducing a particular vintage case as a one-for-one reissue. The retro connection is concentrated in the dial treatment, sub-dial arrangement, tachymeter styling, and multi-link bracelet.
The SRQ047 uses the familiar light-dial panda formula: a silver-colored main dial contrasts with darker sub-dials. The SRQ049 reverses the visual emphasis with a dark blue-gray dial and silver-white sub-dials. Both retain the practical visual grammar associated with a sports timer while presenting it in a larger, more contemporary package.
Seiko also gives the case and bracelet varied hairline finishing and a super-hard coating. Those details are intended to make the watches look more refined than a basic tool-watch chronograph. The result is heritage-inspired rather than genuinely vintage: the dimensions, materials, finishing approach, and movement architecture are modern.
The 8R48 automatic chronograph
At the center of both watches is Seiko Caliber 8R48, an automatic mechanical chronograph movement that can also be wound by hand. It has 34 jewels and approximately 45 hours of power reserve. The chronograph can record elapsed times up to 30 minutes and 12 hours, and the watch includes a date display and stop-second function for setting the time more precisely.
Two movement features matter especially to enthusiasts:
- Column wheel: This coordinates the chronograph’s start, stop, and reset operations through a dedicated switching component. It is a traditional approach often associated with higher-grade chronograph construction and a more deliberate pusher operation, although the presence of a column wheel alone does not determine the entire quality of a movement.
- Vertical clutch: This engages the chronograph seconds mechanism vertically rather than meshing it through a conventional horizontal coupling. In principle, that arrangement helps reduce the visible stutter that can occur when a chronograph starts and can reduce unnecessary wear from gear engagement.
Those features help explain why the SRQ047 and SRQ049 sit well above Seiko’s more accessible quartz and entry-level mechanical chronographs in the range. They are not simply retro-styled watches with an ordinary time-and-date caliber underneath; both are built around a purpose-designed automatic chronograph architecture.
Seiko specifies accuracy of +25 to -15 seconds per day. That is a manufacturer specification, not an independent timing result. Actual performance can vary with position, winding state, temperature, magnetism, age, and the individual movement, so the number should not be treated as a test report for every example.
Case, crystal, bracelet, and water resistance
The 42.0 mm stainless-steel case is 14.6 mm thick and measures 49.5 mm from lug to lug. The last figure is particularly important when judging fit: lug-to-lug span often affects how a watch sits across the wrist more than diameter alone. On paper, these are substantial chronographs, not compact vintage-sized pieces.
The 14.6 mm thickness also reflects the mechanical chronograph inside. Buyers who are accustomed to thinner three-hand watches should expect more height under a shirt cuff. Whether the case feels comfortable or oversized depends on wrist shape, wrist circumference, bracelet sizing, and personal tolerance; the published dimensions do not justify calling either model universally slim or small-wearing.

Both references include a dual-curved sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating on the inner surface. Sapphire offers strong scratch resistance for a watch intended to be worn regularly, while the internal coating is designed to improve legibility by reducing reflections without exposing the coating directly to everyday abrasion.
The stainless-steel bracelet uses a multi-link design and receives the same super-hard coating listed for the case. It closes with a three-fold clasp and push-button release. Lug spacing is 20 mm. The SRQ049 additionally includes a black calf-leather strap with its own folding clasp; the SRQ047 is presented with its stainless-steel bracelet and should not be assumed to include that leather alternative.
Water resistance is rated at 10 bar, or 100 meters. That is useful everyday water resistance, but it is not a promise that every activity or situation is appropriate. Seiko’s specification should not be turned into an independent claim about swimming, diving, aging seals, or real-world water performance without separate testing and maintenance context.
Other listed specifications include magnetic resistance of 4,800 A/m, LumiBrite on the hands and indices, and a solid screw-down case back. The solid back hides the movement, but it also supports Seiko’s effort to keep the case relatively slimmer than it might otherwise be with a display back.
Why the SRQ049 is a 100th Anniversary model
The SRQ049 commemorates the 100th anniversary of the Seiko name appearing on a wristwatch dial. Seiko identified 2024 as the centenary milestone, although the two watches themselves were announced in November 2023 and scheduled for availability at select retail partners in December 2023.
The SRQ049 is limited to 1,000 pieces. Seiko specifies an individual serial number on the case back and marks the commemorative status there. It is more precise to call this a 1,000-piece limited edition with an individual serial number than to make broader claims about numbering, rarity, or investment potential.
The anniversary model’s appeal is therefore cumulative: it combines the darker blue-gray colorway with the historical designation, limited production, serial-numbered case back, and additional leather strap. Those features may matter to collectors, but they do not make the SRQ049 mechanically superior to the SRQ047.
Launch prices and what they mean in 2026
At launch, Seiko’s U.S. recommended retail prices were $2,500 for the SRQ047 and $2,700 for the SRQ049. Seiko’s Canadian announcement listed CAD $3,395 and CAD $3,675, respectively, while European launch coverage reported prices of €2,700 and €2,900.
These are regional launch or recommended prices from 2023, not guaranteed transaction prices in August 2026. Current stock, retailer discounting, discontinued-status claims, and secondary-market prices must be checked listing by listing. Seiko’s U.S. SRQ047 product page has continued to display a $2,500 price at the time checked, but a catalog page is not proof of live inventory or of the price a buyer will actually pay.

- Cream Dial Design: Cream dial with full Arabic numerals pairs with an adjustable green fabric strap for a rugged, outdoor look
- Adjustable Strap: A comfortable band fits securely up to an 8-inch wrist circumference for everyday wear, day in and day out
- Indiglo Backlight: A push of the button illuminates the dial and luminous hands in the dark, day or night, rain or shine
- All-Weather Durability: A mineral glass crystal and water resistance to 50 meters keep this field watch ready for daily wear
- Built to Last: A Timex watch is designed for durability and everyday reliability; every piece reflects our commitment to quality without compromise
If you are shopping for the regular model, compare the Seiko SRQ047 only when the listing matches the exact reference and the seller, authenticity documentation, warranty, return terms, and regional availability are acceptable. The same caution applies to the Seiko SRQ049: limited-edition marketplace listings can vary considerably in seller reliability, completeness, price, and warranty support.

Choose the SRQ047 if:
- You prefer the classic, high-contrast panda layout.
- You want the design without relying on a limited-edition allocation.
- You do not need the additional leather strap supplied with the SRQ049.
- You want to spend less at the original U.S. recommended price.
- You view the watch primarily as a mechanical chronograph rather than as an anniversary collectible.
Choose the SRQ049 if:
- You prefer the darker blue-gray dial and silver-white sub-dials.
- The 100th Anniversary connection is important to your collection.
- You value the 1,000-piece production limit and individual case-back serial number.
- You want both the steel bracelet and the included black calf-leather strap with folding clasp.
- You are willing to verify current availability and pay the premium associated with the limited model.
The practical decision is simple: the watches offer substantially the same mechanical and physical platform, so the choice is mostly about dial preference, production status, and the value you place on the anniversary package. The SRQ047 is the cleaner value-oriented recommendation within this pair; the SRQ049 is the more emotionally and historically differentiated option.

- Confirm the reference: Make sure the listing says SRQ047 or SRQ049 rather than a visually similar Speedtimer model.
- Check the region: Verify that the watch is intended for your market and that the stated warranty is valid there.
- Inspect what is included: The SRQ049 should be evaluated for its bracelet, additional black calf strap, folding clasp, boxes, papers, and case-back markings. Do not assume the SRQ047 includes the extra strap.
- Compare the complete price: Include taxes, shipping, import charges, service considerations, and any marketplace fees rather than comparing headline prices alone.
- Assess fit from the numbers: Use the 42 mm diameter, 14.6 mm thickness, and 49.5 mm lug-to-lug measurement against your wrist and existing watches.
- Prioritize seller quality: For a mechanical chronograph at this price, authenticity, return rights, warranty coverage, and after-sales support matter as much as a small discount.
Verdict
The SRQ047 and SRQ049 are compelling because Seiko has moved beyond superficial retro styling. Their vintage influence is clear in the panda or reverse-panda dials, tachymeter treatment, and bracelet design, but the underlying proposition is a modern 42 mm Prospex chronograph with a column-wheel, vertical-clutch automatic movement and sapphire crystal.
The SRQ047 is the rational choice for the brighter design and regular-production availability. The SRQ049 earns its premium through its darker colorway, 100th Anniversary identity, 1,000-piece limitation, serial-numbered case back, and included leather strap—not through a different caliber or superior stated specifications. Both are substantial watches, and their size and thickness should be treated as central buying considerations rather than minor details.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are the Seiko SRQ047 and SRQ049 vintage reissues?
No. They draw on the appearance of Seiko’s early-1970s sports chronographs, but the case, dimensions, sapphire crystal, finishing, and 8R48 movement make them modern heritage-inspired watches rather than one-for-one vintage reissues.
What is the difference between the Seiko SRQ047 and SRQ049?
The SRQ047 is a regular-production panda-style model with a silver-colored dial. The SRQ049 has a dark blue-gray dial, is limited to 1,000 pieces as a Seiko 100th Anniversary model, has an individually serial-numbered case back, and includes an additional black calf-leather strap with folding clasp.

How accurate is the 8R48 movement?
Seiko lists a manufacturer accuracy specification of +25 to -15 seconds per day. That is not an independent timing test, and an individual watch may perform differently depending on conditions and position.
Can you swim with the SRQ047 or SRQ049?
Both are rated to 10 bar, equivalent to 100 meters, but that rating should not be treated as a blanket guarantee for every water activity. Seal condition, age, maintenance, and the specific activity all matter.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Buy the SRQ047 for the classic panda design and regular-production simplicity; choose the SRQ049 for its darker dial, 100th Anniversary identity, 1,000-piece limitation, serial-numbered case back, and included leather strap. Mechanically, they are substantially the same watch, and both require accepting a sizeable 42 mm by 14.6 mm case.
