The Seiko Sportsmatic 5 was introduced in 1963 and is identified by Seiko as the first Seiko 5 watch—and Japan’s first automatic day-date watch. Its defining idea was practical: combine self-winding, a day-and-date display, water-resistant construction, a recessed crown and a durable case and bracelet in one everyday watch. That history describes the original design, not the present condition of every surviving vintage example.
What is a Seiko Sportsmatic 5?
It is the 1963 watch Seiko identifies as the beginning of the Seiko 5 line. The Seiko Museum Ginza calls it the “Seiko Sportsmatic 5 (the ‘Five’),” while Seiko’s current Seiko 5 Sports history also spells the name “Sportmatic 5.” The spelling differs in Seiko’s own material; that alone is not evidence of two separate 1963 watches.

Seiko says the Sportsmatic 5 was designed, engineered and manufactured by Suwa Seikosha under Seiko’s planning, including its movement, dial, case and bracelet. Its history is therefore more than a familiar name: the model brought together a set of functional features that became the basis of Seiko 5’s identity.
What were the five features?
Seiko’s account describes “5” as shorthand for five practical qualities, rather than a claim about five complications:
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Automatic winding: The watch winds itself through the movement of the wearer’s wrist.
- Day-date display: Day of the week and date appear together in a single window, positioned at three o’clock in Seiko’s description.
- Water-resistant construction: Water resistance was part of the original design brief.
- Recessed crown: The crown sits at four o’clock, tucked into the case profile rather than placed at the more familiar three o’clock position.
- Durable case and bracelet: Seiko emphasized a robust build, including a metal bracelet, as part of the watch’s everyday character.
The Seiko Museum’s account describes the same combination, including a masculine design and metal band. Together, the features made the “Five” a coherent design proposition: automatic convenience, a useful calendar, and construction intended for regular wear.
How did its movement and construction work?
Seiko’s historical accounts associate the Sportsmatic 5 with the company’s Magic Lever automatic winding mechanism, a tough mainspring and shock-resistant construction. The Seiko Museum’s collection entry also names Diashock, Seiko’s shockproof mechanism. These are historical descriptions of the model’s engineering; they do not establish the service condition or performance of an individual watch today.

The design retrospective from Seiko highlights strong lugs, a stainless-steel bracelet, legibility and a framed day-date window, alongside the recessed crown and water-resistant structure. Those elements matter because they show how the original combined mechanical features with a deliberate, recognizable exterior.
When was the Seiko 5 first made?
Seiko dates the first Seiko 5 watch to 1963. In 1964, Seiko says the Sportsmatic 5 received the Good Design Award; its design-history account calls it the first watch in the watch field to receive that award. These milestones help explain the model’s place in Seiko’s history, but the official accounts cited here do not give a verified numeric sales total.

Is the Sportsmatic 5 the same as Seiko 5 Sports?
No. The Sportsmatic 5 is the 1963 original; Seiko dates the Seiko 5 Sports collection’s beginning to 1968. The later collection built on the foundational Seiko 5 values and, according to Seiko, added enhanced water resistance, a strengthened crystal, and luminous hands and hour markers. They are related chapters in the brand’s history, not interchangeable names for one watch.
Can a vintage Sportsmatic 5 still be worn every day?
That depends on the specific watch. Seiko’s history documents the original intent and design features, but it does not establish that a surviving example remains water resistant, mechanically sound or suitable for daily wear. Age, service history, damage and replacement parts can all affect an individual watch’s condition.

Before relying on a vintage example, have a qualified watchmaker assess its movement and case, and ask for water-resistance testing if that matters to your use. Do not treat the model’s original water-resistant construction as proof that an untested watch is safe around water.
What to check when evaluating an example
Historical identity and present-day condition are different questions. For a particular watch, assess the evidence for that individual example rather than relying on the model’s reputation.
