Seiko announced the Spring Drive Spacewalk Commemorative Edition in September 2009 as a 100-piece limited run planned for early 2010. The production watch was identified as reference SPS005J1. Its defining change from the watch used in space was a screw-in crown, added after the original’s automatic winding mechanism proved effective in space. This is a historical launch, not a new 2026 release.
Why Seiko announced a Spacewalk commemorative watch
The commemorative edition followed the 2008 Spring Drive Spacewalk, a watch Seiko designed for spacewalks and other extravehicular activities. Seiko Museum records that an astronaut successfully used the watch on the International Space Station. Seiko explained that a spring-driven, battery-free approach was relevant to the severe temperature fluctuations of space, where a battery could be damaged or drain unexpectedly. Seiko Museum: Spring Drive Spacewalk
Seiko Design describes Spring Drive as having neither a balance nor a pallet fork and not depending on a battery. Those characteristics are Seiko’s explanation of the movement’s relevance to extreme temperature changes; they do not establish that every Spring Drive watch is certified or intended for spaceflight. In its September 2009 announcement, Seiko said astronaut and entrepreneur Richard Garriott had encouraged the commemorative edition as a way to raise awareness of private space exploration. That was Seiko’s stated purpose for the project, not a claim about a measured result. Seiko Watch Corporation, September 2009 press information

What changed from the spaceflight watch?
Seiko described the screw-in crown as the commemorative model’s sole specification adaptation from the spaceflight watch. The original watch had a non-screw-in crown to make manual winding easier. Seiko said the automatic winding mechanism had operated in space, so the commemorative edition used a screw-in crown to enhance security at the case opening. The original mission watch should not be assumed to have had this crown configuration. Seiko Watch Corporation, September 2009 press information
The planned run was 100 watches. Seiko said each would have a serial number engraved on its case back and come in a customized presentation box. Seiko Watch Corporation, September 2009 press information

What collectors should verify on a pre-owned example
The original specifications provide a checklist for assessing whether a listing is represented as an SPS005J1, but they cannot verify a particular watch’s authenticity, condition, or completeness. Check the reference, seller, condition, provenance, whether both specified straps and the presentation box are included, and available servicing records. Do not treat a listing’s asking price or displayed bid as a confirmed market valuation.
