Seiko SRPE39K Save the Ocean: What the Manta Ray Dial and Specs Reveal

Seiko’s SRPE39K1 Save the Ocean pairs a manta-ray-inspired dial with a 4R36 automatic movement, 200 m diver’s water resistance and a stated marine-conservation connection.

The Seiko SRPE39K1, also listed by Seiko as the SRPE39, is a Prospex Sea Save the Ocean Special Edition. Its wave-like dial is designed to evoke the ocean as seen through a manta ray’s vision; the watch pairs that visual identity with a 200 m diver’s rating and Seiko’s automatic 4R36 movement. The title refers to a photo feature, but its original images and photographer could not be identified here, so this guide focuses on what Seiko’s own product and initiative pages establish.

What is the Seiko SRPE39K Save the Ocean?

Seiko’s official product page identifies the watch as the SRPE39, a Prospex Sea Save the Ocean Special Edition. Seiko Boutique UK uses the retail designation SRPE39K1 and calls it the Prospex Save The Ocean “Turtle.” The two designations refer to the same Save the Ocean variant in those official listings; suffixes and availability can differ by region. Seiko’s product page and the Seiko Boutique UK listing provide the model details.

What does the dial represent?

Seiko Boutique describes the dial as representing the ocean viewed through a manta ray’s vision at five meters. In the brand’s explanation, the colors echo sunlight refracting through the water, while the patterns symbolize underwater waves. That is Seiko’s stated design intention, rather than a claim that the dial reproduces a specific photograph or a scientifically exact view.

How the SRPE39 is equipped

Seiko’s official specification page lists the following details for the SRPE39:

Feature Seiko-listed specification
Movement Caliber 4R36, automatic with manual winding; approximately 41 hours of power reserve; 24 jewels
Functions Day/date display and stop-second function
Case dimensions 45.0 mm diameter, 47.7 mm lug-to-lug, 13.2 mm thick
Case and bracelet Stainless steel
Crystal Sapphire crystal with inner anti-reflective coating
Dial and bezel illumination LumiBrite on the hands, indices and bezel
Lug width 22 mm
Diver’s water resistance 200 m / 660 ft
Diver features Unidirectional rotating bezel, screw-down crown and screw case back

These dimensions give a more useful sense of fit than the 45 mm diameter alone: the listed lug-to-lug length is 47.7 mm, and the bracelet attaches at 22 mm. They are specification figures, not a substitute for trying the watch on if case size is a concern. See Seiko’s official SRPE39 specifications for the source listing.

What “Save the Ocean” means

Seiko says its Prospex Save the Ocean initiative supports marine conservation activities. Its initiative page names PADI’s Marine Debris Program, known as Dive Against Debris, and says that more than 70,000 divers have contributed to an underwater database of seafloor debris. That figure is Seiko’s reported count; the page does not show a publication year for it.

Seiko also describes support for polar-region environmental research with Japan’s National Institute of Polar Research and an underwater archaeology project. The initiative page does not establish a per-watch donation or a specific contribution amount for the SRPE39, so the conservation association should not be read as a disclosed donation attached to each sale. Details are on Seiko’s Save the Ocean page.

What the product photos can—and cannot—tell you

The original photo feature named in the headline, including its publisher, photographer, date and exact images, could not be identified from the available source material. The official Seiko product pages confirm the model and its stated design concept, but they do not establish that their product images are the photos in that feature. For visual interpretation, the reliable point is Seiko Boutique’s own explanation of the manta-ray perspective, refracted-light colors and underwater-wave pattern.
