Smart Contact Lenses Can Overlay Information Without Blocking Your View—but They’re Still Prototypes

Smart contact lenses can overlay digital information while preserving a view of the physical world—but as of August 2026, they remain prototype-stage technology rather than a product you can buy.

Smart contact lenses that place digital information in your field of view are real prototypes, not consumer products. As of August 18, 2026, XPANCEO is developing an augmented-reality lens and says it is targeting its first public demonstration of an integrated smart-contact-lens prototype in early 2027. No verified retail AR contact lens, public price, or ordinary consumer ordering process has been identified.

What smart contact lenses are supposed to do

A smart contact lens is a contact-lens-like device that combines some of the functions of a wearable computer. Depending on the project, it may include a microdisplay, optical elements, sensors, wireless communication, processing electronics, power-transfer hardware, or medical sensing components.

The term is an umbrella, not a single product category. Some research focuses on monitoring glucose, biomarkers, eye pressure, or eye movement. Those lenses may sense information without displaying anything. An augmented-reality lens is a separate and considerably harder problem: it must create a visible image while remaining small, comfortable, safe, and sufficiently transparent for ordinary vision.

What “without obscuring your view” really means

The intended experience is closer to a tiny near-eye display than to a transparent television covering the entire eye. The wearer would continue seeing the physical world through the lens while a limited virtual image appears in part of the field of view.

That image might be a small alert, status indicator, symbol, or other simple graphic. It could be positioned relative to the wearer’s gaze or controlled through a companion device. Public descriptions do not establish a full-screen, general-purpose interface with unrestricted navigation, translation, or AI-generated information.

“Transparent” also requires careful interpretation. Electronics around the pupil may be opaque, the display area may be limited, and much of the computing or power system may sit elsewhere. The relevant question is not whether the lens looks invisible to someone across the room. It is whether the wearer retains comfortable, safe, and practically unobstructed natural vision.

What XPANCEO has demonstrated

XPANCEO is currently the most prominent example in the supplied evidence. The company presented a portfolio of smart-contact-lens prototypes at VivaTech in June 2026 and reported developing more than 28 prototypes across multiple generations. Its AR Vision concept is aimed at environments such as aviation, racing, and space missions, where a helmet-mounted or glasses-based display could be inconvenient.

XPANCEO says its first public demonstration of an integrated smart-contact-lens prototype is planned for early 2027. That is a future development target, not a launch date or proof of consumer availability. The company’s announcements describe separate pieces of a broader platform, including:

  • a custom microdisplay and optical system;
  • wireless power concepts;
  • flexible electronics;
  • a helmet companion device;
  • microbattery development; and
  • eye-tracking technology.

Its collaboration with JBD, announced on July 7, 2026, concerns a custom microdisplay for smart contact lenses. XPANCEO says the associated optics are designed to form an image that the human eye can focus on comfortably even though the display is extremely close to the cornea. That is an important optical engineering step, but it does not by itself demonstrate a complete wearable lens.

Similarly, XPANCEO and ITEN announced a proof of concept for integrating a thin solid-state battery into a smart-lens platform on May 1, 2026. A battery proof of concept is evidence of component progress, not evidence of a finished lens that is comfortable, safe, reliable, and usable for a full day.

XPANCEO has also described passive eye tracking based on microscopic patterns in the lens and standard cameras. Eye tracking may help control or stabilize an interface, but eye tracking alone is not an AR display.

How a display can fit on a contact lens

The microdisplay

A microdisplay produces the image in an extremely small area. A display that is technically tiny is not automatically suitable for an eye-worn device: it must deliver enough brightness, contrast, resolution, and reliability to be useful without creating excessive heat or bulk.

The optics

The eye cannot simply look at a screen placed almost directly on the cornea and expect a normal viewing experience. Custom optical elements must redirect, magnify, and effectively place the image at a comfortable virtual focal distance. If the optics are poorly designed, the image may be difficult to focus on or may cause fatigue.

Transparent and flexible electronics

Conductive layers, sensors, antennas, and other circuits must be arranged around the pupil and integrated into a curved, soft lens. Preserving the optical path is central to the design, but transparency alone does not guarantee good vision. Components can reduce clarity, contrast, or peripheral awareness even when they are not fully opaque.

Companion hardware

The lens probably will not be a self-contained computer in the science-fiction sense. Public XPANCEO descriptions refer to a helmet companion device and systems involving wireless power and external processing. A lens may be wirelessly connected while still depending on a helmet, phone, necklace, watch, or nearby transmitter for power, computation, communications, or control.

Eye tracking

Eye movements could provide an interface and help determine where an overlay should appear. But gaze-based control introduces its own challenges, including accidental selections, calibration, privacy concerns, and the need to keep virtual content aligned as a soft lens rotates or shifts on the eye.

What has been shown—and what has not

Status What the evidence supports
Component demonstrations Microdisplay work, custom optics, wireless-power concepts, flexible electronics, eye tracking, and a microbattery integration proof of concept.
Specialized prototypes XPANCEO has described AR-vision and other smart-lens prototypes aimed at specialized applications.
Planned integrated prototype XPANCEO says a first public integrated-prototype demonstration is targeted for early 2027.
Consumer product Not established. No verified retail product, public price, or routine purchase path was identified.

The missing evidence matters. Public information does not establish all-day battery life, broad prescription compatibility, long-term everyday-wear safety, a general-purpose navigation or messaging interface, or a completed U.S. regulatory pathway for an AR display contact lens.

The Mojo Lens lesson

Mojo Vision’s Mojo Lens remains an important engineering milestone, but older articles often describe it as though it were still an imminent product. Mojo announced a feature-complete prototype in 2022. On January 6, 2023, however, the company said it was decelerating work on Mojo Lens because it had not secured the additional funding needed to continue the lens program at its previous pace. It redirected resources toward micro-LED display technology.

Where smart contact lenses could be useful

Specialized professional environments

Early applications are more likely to be narrow and controlled than general consumer interfaces. XPANCEO specifically positions its AR Vision concept for aviation, racing, and space-related use. Industrial instructions, hands-free status indicators, limited alerts, and specialized equipment interfaces are other plausible directions.

Accessibility and medical research

Vision-assistance research, eye tracking, and diagnostic sensing could become important applications. A sensing lens, however, should not be confused with a display lens, and a research result should not be presented as a clinically validated treatment.

Consumer features that remain speculative

Directions, notifications, live translation, object identification, teleprompter-style text, zoom, enhanced vision, health monitoring, and AI-generated context are plausible ideas for future products. The available evidence does not show a finished consumer lens performing those functions.

The hardest problems are not just making the image visible

  • Power: A lens has almost no room for a battery, antenna, processor, sensors, and display electronics. Wireless power can reduce battery requirements but increases dependence on external hardware.
  • Heat and safety: Electronics and power transfer near the eye must not create unsafe thermal conditions or electrical and electromagnetic-compatibility problems.
  • Corneal health: A smart lens would still need to address oxygen transmission, dryness, irritation, infection risk, material biocompatibility, and hygiene.
  • Alignment: Soft lenses can rotate and move. A misaligned display may blur, jump, or become uncomfortable.
  • Focus: Near-eye optics must place the virtual image at a usable focal distance rather than forcing the eye to focus on electronics next to the cornea.
  • Visibility: A mostly transparent design may preserve natural vision but leave only a small, low-resolution, limited-color, or low-contrast area for digital information.
  • Wear time: Demonstrating a brief function is very different from proving reliable, comfortable operation for hours.
  • Manufacturing: High-precision optics and electronics must be produced consistently in a curved, wearable medical-device form.
  • Prescriptions: Supporting different prescriptions and eye shapes adds optical and manufacturing complexity.
  • Interaction: Gaze control, voice, gestures, or companion-device controls all have usability and failure modes.
  • Safety-critical use: An incorrect, delayed, distracting, or poorly aligned overlay could be dangerous while driving, flying, racing, or operating machinery.
  • Privacy: Gaze data, biometric measurements, camera feeds, and usage patterns could reveal sensitive information.

Regulation and availability

In the United States, the FDA says contact lenses must be reviewed before they can be sold and maintains a list of lenses cleared or approved for sale. The cited FDA material concerns conventional vision-correction and therapeutic contact lenses; it does not establish a retail AR display lens. Other countries have different regulatory systems.

How to judge the next smart-lens announcement

  1. Confirm that it is worn on the eye. A rig, simulated lens, or view through an optical system is not the same as a finished contact lens.
  2. Ask whether the display is integrated. A passive optical element or separate projector proves less than an active lens display.
  3. Identify the displayed information. A test pattern or single indicator is not equivalent to dynamic text, navigation, or full AR graphics.
  4. Locate the battery and processor. Determine which functions are in the lens and which are handled by companion hardware.
  5. Look for measured runtime and wear-time data. Wireless power claims do not automatically mean all-day operation.
  6. Check optical performance. Field of view, brightness, transparency, contrast, focus, and image stability matter more than promotional terms such as “invisible.”
  7. Look for safety evidence. Seek clinical, thermal, biocompatibility, and wear-time testing.
  8. Check legal availability. A prototype, research study, beta program, and regulated retail product are different categories.
  9. Ask about prescriptions and removal. A usable product must accommodate real wearers and provide clear recovery procedures if electronics fail.

Can you buy smart AR contact lenses now?

No—not as a verified consumer product based on the available evidence. XPANCEO’s public timeline points to an integrated prototype demonstration planned for early 2027, while Mojo Vision’s own announcement documents its pivot away from continuing the Mojo Lens program at its former pace. No verified retail price or ordinary purchase path was identified for either product.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Readers who want digital overlays today generally need another form of head-worn display, such as AR glasses. Those products are a separate category and should not be used as evidence that contact-lens AR is commercially available.

What to watch next

The most meaningful milestones will be an independently scrutinized integrated lens worn by users, published operating and wear-time data, evidence that natural vision remains usable under changing light, regulatory filings, prescription support, and a real developer or commercial access path.

The planned XPANCEO demonstration may show how successfully its microdisplay, optics, power, electronics, and companion hardware work together. It will still need to be evaluated separately from the question of whether a safe, comfortable, affordable consumer product can be manufactured and approved.
