The rare Michael Schumacher Speedmaster discussed here is Omega reference 3553.32, also identified as 35533200: a 42 mm stainless-steel automatic chronograph with a date and a reported production run of 500. It was made for Schumacher’s Ferrari team, according to Fratello and a Christie’s auction record. It is distinct from the more numerous 3559.32 “Legend” edition—and from the hand-wound Speedmaster Moonwatch.
Which Michael Schumacher Speedmaster is the rare one?
The reference is Omega Speedmaster 3553.32, sometimes written as 35533200. Fratello’s September 13, 2016 feature and a Christie’s archived lot record both describe a 500-piece edition made especially for Schumacher’s Ferrari team. Christie’s dates its particular example to circa 2004. Its lot essay tentatively connects the watch to Schumacher’s 2003 Japanese Grand Prix victory, so that commemorative link should be treated as possible rather than confirmed. Fratello’s feature and Christie’s lot record provide the main published accounts.

“Made for the team” describes the reported original purpose; it does not establish that examples could never later be offered for sale. Nor does the reported 500-piece run say how many watches are available today.

Both references are associated with Schumacher, but they are not interchangeable. Fratello describes the 3559.32 as a 6,000-piece “Legend” edition commemorating his sixth world title, and notes different dial wording. The reported production figures below are edition quantities, not present-day stock or market counts.

| Movement description supported here | Automatic chronograph; the calibre is disputed in the sources | Not established by the cited comparison; do not infer it from the 3553.32 |
These are useful identification clues, not a substitute for checking the reference and the individual watch. The sources do not establish every dial or production detail for every example.
What the 3553.32 is—and what it is not
Christie’s describes its 35533200 example as having a 42 mm steel case, white dial with black subdials, automatic movement, chronograph and date functions, and a steel bracelet. Fratello likewise distinguishes the watch as automatic and date-equipped. Those features make it unlike the familiar manually wound Moonwatch, even if the case and bracelet can look similar at a glance.

Do not rely on a specific calibre number without watch-specific verification. Fratello’s article body says calibre 3301, while a reader comment on that article corrects it to 3303; another specialist article also gives 3303, and Christie’s confirms only that its example is automatic. The available accounts therefore do not settle the calibre authoritatively. For identification, “automatic chronograph” is the safer description unless a reliable record for the individual watch confirms more.

The 3553.32 is not the first Schumacher-associated Speedmaster. Fratello’s timeline places the Reduced Racing “Schumacher” in 1996, with red and yellow versions. Those earlier Reduced models should not be confused with this later Ferrari-team reference. Fratello’s 2016 feature says Schumacher had been an Omega ambassador from 1995 before moving to Audemars Piguet. Fratello’s Speedmaster timeline supplies context for the earlier Reduced watches.

What to check on an individual example
Rarity alone cannot establish a particular watch’s originality, condition or value. Christie’s archived record is useful as a record of one example, not as a universal specification or standard package. That lot included box and papers, service-related replacement parts, replaced hands, warranty and certification materials, and a service receipt. Those details apply to that auction watch alone.

- Reference and dial: Check that the watch is represented as 3553.32 / 35533200, then compare its dial details with specialist documentation rather than treating Schumacher branding alone as proof.
- Condition and originality: Ask which parts have been replaced, whether service work is documented, and whether the hands, dial and other components match the seller’s description.
- Provenance and accessories: Treat box, papers, service records and Ferrari-team history as item-specific claims that require supporting documentation.
- Valuation: The cited pages do not establish a current market price. A current appraisal should use recent comparable sales and account for originality, condition, service history, documented provenance and included accessories; old asking prices are not current valuations.
