TAG Heuer’s Nightdiver Recalls an Overlooked James Bond Watch

Timothy Dalton’s Bond likely wore a Heuer/TAG Heuer Professional 1000 Night-Diver 980.031 in The Living Daylights. TAG Heuer’s modern Aquaracer Nightdiver recalls its look but is a separate watch.

The watch most often identified on Timothy Dalton as James Bond in The Living Daylights is a Heuer/TAG Heuer Professional 1000 Night-Diver, reference 980.031. The identification is likely, not certain: the watch appears only briefly during the film’s opening Gibraltar action, and the glimpse does not establish which logo was printed on its dial. TAG Heuer’s current Aquaracer Professional 300 Date Nightdiver, reference WBP201D.FT6197, echoes the vintage watch’s dark case and luminous dial, but it is a distinct modern model—not an exact reissue.

What watch did James Bond wear in The Living Daylights?

In the opening Gibraltar sequence of the 1987 film, Dalton’s Bond is seen during action involving a Land Rover. The watch is visible only briefly, so the film itself does not make a definitive model identification possible. Bond-watch specialists Dell Deaton and Paul Gavin, working with Calibre11, researched the appearance; Bond Lifestyle and Time+Tide report the likely identification as a Professional 1000 Night-Diver, reference 980.031. Bond Lifestyle’s account and Time+Tide’s history of the Night Diver both treat the match as probable rather than conclusive.

The watch is an easily missed Bond appearance, not evidence of a prominent official product-placement partnership. The brief screen view also does not settle whether the dial said Heuer or TAG Heuer. It is safest to describe it as the Heuer/TAG Heuer reference 980.031, rather than claim the film clearly shows one particular logo.

How the modern TAG Heuer Nightdiver relates to the Bond watch

The contemporary counterpart in TAG Heuer’s lineup is the Aquaracer Professional 300 Date Nightdiver, reference WBP201D.FT6197. Its black-coated case and bright luminous dial recall the vintage Night-Diver’s high-contrast look. The resemblance is visual and conceptual: the current Aquaracer has a different reference, larger case, modern materials, and automatic movement, so it should not be described as the same watch or a faithful reissue.

TAG Heuer’s US product listing gives the current model these specifications:

  • Case: 43 mm steel with black DLC coating.
  • Movement: automatic Calibre 5, with a stated 38-hour power reserve; hours, minutes, seconds, and date.
  • Bezel: turning bezel in black DLC-coated steel and ceramic.
  • Dial and crystal: white dial with white Super-LumiNova details against black lacquer, beneath a sapphire crystal.
  • Strap: black rubber with a DLC-coated steel buckle and adjustment system.
  • Water resistance: 300 m, as specified by TAG Heuer.

These are manufacturer-stated specifications, not independent test results. The US listing displayed a price of $4,700 when accessed on October 8, 2026; price and stock can change, and that figure applies to the US listing rather than every market.

Vintage Night-Diver or current Aquaracer Nightdiver?

What to look for if you are researching the vintage reference

Reference 980.031 is the useful search term for the watch collectors connect to Dalton’s Bond. That identification should be kept separate from claims about a specific vintage example: the cited accounts do not verify the authenticity, condition, or present availability of watches offered for sale. Nor does a possible match in a brief film shot prove that every example carrying the reference is the exact watch seen on screen.

For a buyer interested primarily in the Bond-era design, the vintage watch is the historically relevant object but requires careful verification at the individual-watch level. For someone who wants the dark-case, luminous-dial idea in a currently specified TAG Heuer model, the WBP201D.FT6197 is the modern option; its 43 mm size and modern Aquaracer construction make it a different proposition from the likely 980.031.
