The escapement helps connect those jobs by metering the power through the movement.
What does the mainspring do?
The mainspring is the movement’s power source. Winding coils it inside a barrel, where it stores energy. As the spring unwinds, it turns the barrel and sends power through the gear train, which ultimately moves the watch’s hands. Patek Philippe describes it as the movement’s “motor spring” in its glossary.
How the spring is wound depends on the watch. In a manual-wind movement, turning the crown winds it. In an automatic movement, the winding system uses motion from a rotor to wind the mainspring. Both types store energy in the barrel and release it through the movement. Seiko outlines these winding arrangements in its guide to mechanical watches.
What is the difference between a mainspring and a hairspring?
| Part | Main job | Where it works |
|---|---|---|
| Mainspring | Stores and releases energy to drive the movement and hands. | Coiled in the barrel; its force is transmitted through the gear train. |
| Balance spring, or hairspring | Works with the balance wheel to regulate the movement’s rate. | Attached to the balance wheel as part of the regulator. |
The hairspring does not power the hands. It helps regulate the movement; the mainspring supplies the energy. Seiko’s movement overview distinguishes the mainspring as the power source from the balance and hairspring as part of the regulating system.

- Compatible with ETA 2892.
- It is made of metal material, wear-resistant and fatigue-resistant, and ensures stable performance.
- The spring tension is stable, providing continuous power to the movement and ensuring accurate movement.
- After replacing the aging spring, the movement's power reserve capacity can be restored and the movement can be maintained to maintain stability during running.
- Includes 2 main springs, which are convenient for one-time replacement or backup, meeting maintenance needs.
How does the balance spring help a watch keep time?
The balance spring and balance wheel oscillate together. The spring flexes as the wheel moves, helping it return and continue its repeating motion. That oscillation governs the rate at which the movement runs. “Balance spring” and “hairspring” are two names for this same spring; MIYOTA describes it as a spiral spring attached to the balance wheel in its explanation of hairsprings.
An analogy is a pendulum and its restoring force: the balance wheel provides the moving element, while the hairspring helps control its repeating motion. A watch’s mechanism is not literally a pendulum clock, but the comparison helps distinguish regulation from power storage.

How do the springs fit into the movement?
- Winding: The crown winds a manual movement’s mainspring; an automatic winding system uses rotor motion.
- Storage: The wound mainspring holds energy inside the barrel.
- Transmission: As it unwinds, the mainspring drives the barrel and gear train.
- Metering: The escapement meters the delivery of power through the movement.
- Regulation: The balance wheel and hairspring oscillate to govern the movement’s rate.
This chain separates the jobs: the mainspring supplies power, the escapement controls its release, and the balance system regulates timekeeping. The Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie explains the roles of these components in its overview of how a mechanical watch works.
What are watch springs made of?
Materials and construction vary by manufacturer and movement. These examples are specific to the companies’ descriptions, not universal specifications:

- EXQUISITE WORKMANSHIP: Mechanical watch movement mainspring is small and convenient, easy to carry, exquisite workmanship, no scratches to the watch.
- PROFESSIONAL ACCESSORIES: Watch movement mainspring is a professional watch repair accessory for watch repair stores and repair stores.
- SMOOTHER AND TIGHTER: Mechanical watch clockwork spring is associated with the mainspring of the 8200 movement, allowing for a smoother, tighter mainspring.
- PRIMARY USE: Watch clockwork spring replacement is mainly used for replacing or repairing aged or damaged mainspring, easy to install and use.
- AND : Watch clockwork spring is made of alloy material with high accuracy, wear and impact resistance, no deformation, strong and .
- Grand Seiko mainsprings: Grand Seiko says its Caliber 9S mainsprings are made in-house from SPRON cobalt-nickel alloys and are around 0.1 mm thick. The page does not state a publication year. It describes the springs as designed for strength and durability; see “The mainspring, the power behind the precision.”
- SPRON alloy: Seiko describes SPRON as a proprietary alloy developed for resistance to tearing and corrosion, used for mainsprings and hairsprings. Its movement information does not make this a universal material specification.
- Balance-spring alloy history: A. Lange & Söhne says Richard Lange patented an alloy containing beryllium for balance springs in 1930. That historical example does not establish that all modern balance springs use the same formulation. See The Lange Balance Spring.
- Hairspring production: MIYOTA says its hairspring manufacturing process requires precise control of thickness and production conditions, and describes hand-shaping the terminal curve as its final step. Its stated tolerance is under 0.1 micron for its process; this is a MIYOTA-specific manufacturing claim, not an industry-wide standard. See MIYOTA’s hairspring explanation.
Can you replace a mainspring or hairspring with a generic one?
No general-purpose replacement can be assumed to fit every mechanical watch. Spring dimensions and design are tied to the movement, and the caliber must be identified before selecting a replacement. A watchmaker or the movement’s documentation can establish compatibility. Hairspring work also involves the regulator, so it is not a straightforward interchangeable component for an unidentified watch.
