For a mechanical watch, good routine care means winding it as its maker directs, cleaning only the exterior in ways suited to its materials, and treating water resistance as a condition to monitor—not a permanent guarantee. If timekeeping changes suddenly, moisture appears beneath the crystal, or the watch has taken a hard impact, have a qualified watchmaker inspect it rather than opening the case yourself.
How do manual and automatic watches get wound?
A manual-wind watch gets energy from its mainspring when you turn the crown. Wind it according to the instructions for your specific model, and stop if the crown meets resistance; forcing it can damage the winding mechanism.
An automatic watch uses a rotor moved by wrist motion to wind the mainspring. Many automatic watches can also be wound by hand, including when stopped, but the correct method and amount of winding depend on the model. TAG Heuer advises taking its watches off the wrist to wind them and provides model-specific guidance; Audemars Piguet also distinguishes between hand-wound and self-winding watches. Do not treat one brand’s winding count or procedure as universal. See TAG Heuer’s care guidance and Audemars Piguet’s care tips.
How should you clean a mechanical watch?
For routine dust or fingerprints, gently wipe the outside with a soft microfiber cloth. This cleans the case and crystal surface; it does not clean or service the movement.

Before adding water or using a brush, check the watch’s manual and care instructions. Cleaning methods differ by model and material. TAG Heuer describes a soft-bristled brush and warm water in its guidance, while also cautioning against immersing the watch. Do not use water on a watch that is not water-resistant, and keep leather straps dry. If the maker permits rinsing, follow its instructions and dry the watch gently afterward. Avoid abrasive cleaners and any attempt to clean inside the case.
Can magnetism or shocks affect a watch?
Magnetic fields can interfere with mechanical-watch performance. Keep the watch away from known magnetic sources when practical. If it suddenly runs abnormally fast or slow, ask a qualified watchmaker to diagnose it: magnetism is one possible cause, not a confirmed explanation for every change in rate. TAG Heuer and Audemars Piguet both warn about magnetic exposure in their care guidance and care tips.

When does a mechanical watch need professional service?
There is no single service interval established for every mechanical watch. Follow the instructions for your model and seek professional advice if timekeeping becomes noticeably abnormal or the watch’s function changes. Manufacturer recommendations differ, and their intervals are brand-specific rather than a universal industry schedule:
