Important date note: This is a retrospective 2025 U.S. buying guide, not a claim about the best watches available on August 9, 2026. Products such as Apple Watch Series 11, Google Pixel Watch 4, and newer Samsung models have changed the current market. Check the latest Apple lineup and current Google Pixel Watch comparison before buying today.

For the 2025 market, the Apple Watch Series 10 was the best choice for an iPhone owner, the Google Pixel Watch 3 the best general Android smartwatch, and the OnePlus Watch 3 the best Android option for battery life. Runners were better served by the Garmin Forerunner 265, while the Withings ScanWatch 2 was the most convincing hybrid watch for people who wanted health tracking without a daily charging routine.

Quick answers: which 2025 smartwatch should you buy?

Watch Best for Phone compatibility Sizes Manufacturer battery claim GPS and cellular Main ownership caveat
Apple Watch Series 10 Most iPhone owners iPhone XS or later with the required iOS version 42mm, 46mm Up to 18 hours; up to 36 hours in Low Power Mode Built-in GPS; GPS and cellular configurations available Daily charging; iPhone-only
Google Pixel Watch 3 Most Android users Most Android phones on Android 10 or later; Google Account and Pixel Watch app required 41mm, 45mm Up to 24 hours with always-on display; up to 36 hours in Battery Saver Built-in GPS; LTE version available Some advanced Fitbit insights require Fitbit Premium
OnePlus Watch 3 Android battery life Android only One large case size in the original 2025 model Up to five days in Smart Mode Dual-frequency GPS; verify cellular availability for the exact SKU Large case and less-established health ecosystem
OnePlus Watch 2R Budget Wear OS Android only One size Up to 100 hours in Smart Mode; up to 12 days in Power Saver Dual-frequency GPS; no phone-free smartwatch claim should be assumed Power Saver limits smart functions; older Wear OS 4
Apple Watch Ultra 2 Rugged iPhone use iPhone XS or later with the applicable iOS version 49mm Up to 36 hours; up to 72 hours in Low Power Mode Dual-frequency GPS; cellular connectivity Expensive, heavy, and oversized for ordinary use
Samsung Galaxy Watch 7 Samsung phone owners Android 11 or later; best health feature support requires a compatible Samsung Galaxy phone 40mm, 44mm Samsung rates it for up to 40 hours, depending on conditions Built-in GPS; model-dependent cellular versions Samsung Health Monitor restrictions on non-Samsung phones
Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 Classic Traditional Android design Compatible Android phones; not iPhone-compatible 43mm, 47mm Up to 40 hours Built-in GPS; model-dependent cellular versions Older hardware and Wear OS generation
Mobvoi TicWatch Pro 5 Dual-display battery compromise Android-focused Large 50mm-class body Up to 80 hours Built-in GPS; the covered model has no cellular version Wear OS 3.5 is older than the main 2025 alternatives
Withings ScanWatch 2 Hybrid design and long battery life iOS 16 or later; Android 12 or later 38mm, 42mm Up to 35 days on the current U.S. page; launch material said 30 days Not a full phone-free GPS smartwatch Few third-party apps; some coaching requires Withings+
TAG Heuer Connected Calibre E4 Luxury design in the 2025 market Wear OS-compatible Android setup 42mm, 45mm About one day for the 42mm model Smartwatch functions depend on the phone and model Current U.S. product pages mark E4 models discontinued
Garmin Forerunner 265 Running and structured training Android and iPhone through Garmin Connect 265 and smaller 265S 46mm model: up to 13 days smartwatch; up to 20 hours GPS-only Built-in GPS, including multi-band modes where supported; no LTE requirement Fewer apps and weaker communications than Apple or Wear OS
Garmin epix Pro (Gen 2) Serious outdoor sports Android and iPhone through Garmin Connect 42mm, 47mm, 51mm Up to 10 days for 42mm to 31 days for 51mm with wrist gesture enabled Built-in GPS, maps, and navigation; no cellular requirement Expensive, complex, and large; always-on display reduces battery life

Battery figures are manufacturer estimates, not normalized test results. Display mode, GPS use, LTE, music, sleep tracking, sensors, and battery-saving settings can change them substantially. Prices are deliberately not listed as a single number: this is a dated 2025 snapshot, and the supplied source material does not provide consistently verified U.S. prices that can be compared without mixing launch MSRP, discounts, and later 2026 stock.

Choose by phone before choosing by feature

Phone compatibility is the first decision gate. A watch that cannot pair with your phone, or that withholds the health feature you bought it for, is not a bargain.

If you use an iPhone

Buy the Apple Watch Series 10 unless you have a specific reason not to. Apple Watch has the deepest integration with iPhone notifications, messaging, Apple Health, safety features, apps, payments, and setup. The Series 10 requires an iPhone XS or later with the applicable iOS version, according to Apple’s compatibility requirements.

Garmin vívoactive® 5, Health & Fitness GPS Smartwatch, 42mm, Ivory
  • Designed with a bright, colorful AMOLED display, get a more complete picture of your health, thanks to battery life of up to 11 days in smartwatch mode (5 days display always-on)
  • Body Battery energy monitoring helps you understand when you’re charged up or need to rest, with even more personalized insights based on sleep, naps, stress levels, workouts and more (data presented is intended to be a close estimation of metrics tracked)
  • Get a sleep score and personalized sleep coaching for how much sleep you need — and get tips on how to improve plus key metrics such as HRV status to better understand your health (data presented is intended to be a close estimation of metrics tracked)
  • Find new ways to keep your body moving with more than 30 built-in indoor and GPS sports apps, including walking, running, cycling, HIIT, swimming, golf and more
  • Wheelchair mode tracks pushes — rather than steps — and includes push and handcycle activities with preloaded workouts for strength, cardio, HIIT, Pilates and yoga, challenges specific to wheelchair users and more (data presented is intended to be a close estimation of metrics tracked)

The Apple Watch Ultra 2 is the upgrade for a larger, tougher case, longer battery life, dual-frequency GPS, diving features, or extended outdoor use. A Garmin or Withings watch can also work with an iPhone, but neither provides the same Apple ecosystem experience. Wear OS watches may offer limited iPhone pairing in some circumstances, but they are not equivalent substitutes for Apple Watch.

Do not buy a Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 or newer model for an iPhone. Samsung says these watches depend on Google Play services and are not compatible with iOS; see its compatibility guidance.

If you use Android

  • Samsung Galaxy phone: Choose the Galaxy Watch 7 if you want the fullest Samsung Health and Galaxy-device integration. Its ECG, irregular-rhythm notifications, and sleep-apnea features have phone restrictions, so confirm that your exact Samsung phone and region support them.
  • Google Pixel or another recent Android phone: The Pixel Watch 3 is the most balanced general-purpose choice in this 2025 list. Google lists compatibility with most Android phones running Android 10 or later, along with a Google Account and the Pixel Watch app.
  • Any compatible Android phone and long battery life: Choose the OnePlus Watch 3. The cheaper OnePlus Watch 2R is the value alternative.
  • Running, hiking, cycling, or multisport: Garmin is the more specialized choice. Garmin watches generally work with both Android and iPhone through Garmin Connect, although notification and smart features vary by operating system.
  • Simple health tracking and a conventional watch face: The Withings ScanWatch 2 works with iOS 16 or later and Android 12 or later.

Changing platforms later is a real ownership cost. Apple Watch requires an iPhone, while OnePlus and Samsung’s recent Galaxy Watches are Android choices. Pixel Watch is broad within Android but remains tied to Google accounts and Fitbit. Garmin and Withings are more platform-flexible, but your health history may still be divided between Apple Health, Fitbit, Samsung Health, Garmin Connect, Withings, and Google Health Connect.

Our 12 favorite smartwatches from the 2025 market

1. Apple Watch Series 10: best smartwatch for iPhone

Why buy it: The Series 10 was the easiest recommendation for most iPhone owners in 2025. It combined Apple’s mature app ecosystem and notifications with ECG, temperature sensing, sleep-apnea notifications, depth sensing, fall detection, crash detection, sleep tracking, and an always-on display. Its 42mm and 46mm cases and thinner design also made it less bulky than the Ultra line. Apple’s technical specifications document the hardware and battery claims.

Battery: Apple rates it for up to 18 hours, or up to 36 hours in Low Power Mode. That is a one-day watch for many people, especially with sleep tracking, workouts, LTE, or an always-on display enabled. The advantage is fast, predictable charging; the disadvantage is that overnight wear requires planning.

Health qualification: Health features vary by country, age, software, and regulatory availability. U.S. blood-oxygen functionality also needs a date label. During the early-to-mid-2025 period covered by the original roundup, U.S. models were sold without working blood-oxygen functionality because of the Masimo dispute. On August 14, 2025, Apple announced a redesigned Blood Oxygen feature for some affected Series 9, Series 10, and Ultra 2 watches. See Apple’s later U.S. update; do not assume every Series 10 has the same status.

Main drawback: It is iPhone-only and its battery is short beside Garmin, OnePlus, or Withings. Cellular models can also require a separate carrier plan. Best alternative: Choose the Garmin Forerunner 265 for serious running or the Withings ScanWatch 2 for multi-week battery life.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Google Pixel Watch 3: best general Android smartwatch

Why buy it: The Pixel Watch 3 offered the cleanest all-round Wear OS experience for many Android owners, pairing Google apps and services with Fitbit’s health platform. The 41mm and 45mm sizes, bright display, Daily Readiness, Cardio Load, Target Load, running metrics, sleep tracking, and loss-of-pulse detection made it more versatile than a fitness-only watch. Google lists a peak brightness of 2,000 nits and a minimum always-on brightness of 1 nit in its specifications.

Battery: Google rates it for up to 24 hours with the always-on display and up to 36 hours in Battery Saver mode. Battery Saver is not a like-for-like alternative to normal use: power-saving modes can reduce or disable functions that attracted you to a smartwatch.

The 41mm version weighs 31g without its band, while the 45mm weighs 37g, making both relatively approachable for overnight use. The smaller model suits slimmer wrists; the larger model offers more screen and battery capacity.

Subscription: The watch’s core functions do not depend on a recurring subscription, but some advanced Fitbit insights, coaching, and content require Fitbit Premium. Google included six months of Premium at launch, but trial periods and prices change; the launch announcement should be treated as historical rather than a promise for a later purchase.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Main drawback: It remains broadly a daily-charge watch and its health experience is more Fitbit-centric than Garmin’s training platform. Best alternative: The OnePlus Watch 3 if charging is your priority, or the Galaxy Watch 7 if you own a Samsung phone.

3. OnePlus Watch 3: best Android battery life

Why buy it: The OnePlus Watch 3 was the most compelling 2025 compromise between a full Wear OS smartwatch and multi-day battery life. It used Wear OS 5 alongside a low-power RTOS component and a dual-processor architecture. That design allowed it to retain Google apps and smartwatch functions while using less power for basic tasks. It also offered health and sleep tracking, a circular AMOLED display, and dual-frequency GPS. See the official specifications for the manufacturer’s operating and battery assumptions.

Battery: OnePlus claimed up to five days in Smart Mode. Treat that as an upper-bound manufacturer estimate, not a universal result: always-on display, GPS, LTE if applicable, music, frequent workouts, and continuous sensors reduce endurance.

Main drawback: The original 2025 model came in one large case size, which can be uncomfortable on a small wrist or during sleep. Its charging puck is also a less polished part of the ownership experience, and OnePlus’s health ecosystem was less established than Apple Health, Fitbit, Samsung Health, or Garmin Connect.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best alternative: The OnePlus Watch 2R costs less in the 2025 category and still delivers Wear OS, but it has an older software generation and a less sophisticated health feature set. Choose the Pixel Watch 3 instead if compactness and Fitbit integration matter more than battery.

4. OnePlus Watch 2R: best budget Android smartwatch

Why buy it: The Watch 2R brought Wear OS, Google apps, notifications, GPS, 2GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, and a 1.43-inch AMOLED display to a lower-cost Android watch category. OnePlus describes it as approximately 25% lighter than the Watch 2 chassis. It was a strong value for someone who wanted real smartwatch functions without paying flagship-watch prices.

Battery: OnePlus claims up to 100 hours in Smart Mode and up to 12 days in Power Saver Mode. Those figures should not be placed side by side as if they describe the same watch behavior. Power Saver mode limits advanced smartwatch functions; use the 100-hour figure as the more relevant comparison for normal Wear OS use.

The watch also advertises dual-frequency GPS, 5 ATM water resistance, and IP68 protection. Those ratings do not make it indestructible, and 5 ATM is a pressure rating rather than an invitation to use the watch for every kind of water activity.

Main drawback: Its health sensors and interpretation tools are less sophisticated than those on Apple, Samsung, Google, or Garmin watches. It is Android-only and runs Wear OS 4 rather than the Wear OS 5 used by newer 2025 options. Best alternative: Buy the OnePlus Watch 3 for a stronger long-term and health-feature proposition, or the Garmin Forerunner 265 if training is more important than apps.

5. Apple Watch Ultra 2: best rugged smartwatch for iPhone

Why buy it: The Ultra 2 was the specialist Apple Watch for outdoor users. Its 49mm titanium case, sapphire crystal, 3,000-nit display, Action button, cellular connectivity, depth gauge, water-temperature sensor, and L1+L5 precision dual-frequency GPS made it the strongest Apple choice for long hikes, extended workouts, water sports, and demanding environments. Apple rates it for 100m water resistance, IP6X dust resistance, and recreational scuba diving to 40m under stated conditions. The technical specifications define those limits.

Battery: Up to 36 hours in normal use and up to 72 hours in Low Power Mode is substantially better than the Series 10, but it is still not Garmin or Withings territory. Low Power Mode can change the behavior and availability of functions, so it is not a direct equivalent to ordinary use.

Main drawback: It is expensive, heavy, and large. Most iPhone owners do not need diving support, a 49mm case, or the tougher construction. Cellular service may add a monthly fee. Best alternative: The Series 10 for everyday use, or the Garmin epix Pro for serious outdoor training across iPhone and Android.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Samsung Galaxy Watch 7: best smartwatch for Samsung phones

Why buy it: Galaxy phone owners received the deepest Samsung integration, Samsung Health features, advanced sensors, two case sizes, and current Wear OS software in the Galaxy Watch 7. It uses Samsung’s BioActive Sensor, electrical sensors capable of ECG functions, bioelectrical impedance analysis, temperature sensing, GPS, and sleep-related tools. Samsung lists 300mAh and 425mAh batteries for the 40mm and 44mm models respectively and markets up to 40 hours depending on conditions.

Important correction: The Galaxy Watch 7 does not run Tizen. It launched with Wear OS Powered by Samsung, based on Wear OS 5. An older specification block in the source roundup mislabeled its operating system; Samsung’s official specifications identify the Wear OS platform.

Compatibility warning: It works with Android 11 or later, but ECG, irregular-rhythm notifications, and sleep-apnea features in Samsung Health Monitor are restricted to compatible Samsung Galaxy phones. A non-Samsung Android phone may pair successfully and still not provide the health functions you expected. Check Samsung’s support page before buying.

Main drawback: Battery life is closer to one or two days than to Garmin or OnePlus endurance, and the full health experience is not universal across Android. Best alternative: The Pixel Watch 3 for broader Android compatibility, or the OnePlus Watch 3 for longer battery life.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 Classic: best traditional Android design

Why buy it: The Galaxy Watch 6 Classic appealed to people who wanted a recognizable watch shape and physical control rather than a featureless touchscreen. Its rotating bezel, premium construction, 43mm and 47mm sizes, Wear OS interface, and up-to-40-hour battery rating made it one of the most satisfying Android designs of 2025.

It runs Wear OS Powered by Samsung based on Wear OS 4 and is not compatible with iPhone. Samsung’s launch information and specification sheet provide the relevant generation and battery details.

Main drawback: The rotating bezel is a design advantage, not a reason to ignore newer hardware if the prices are similar. The Classic is larger and heavier than standard models and uses an older processor and Wear OS generation than the Galaxy Watch 7. Best alternative: Choose the Watch 7 for newer hardware, or keep the Classic if its bezel and traditional appearance are the point of purchase.

8. Mobvoi TicWatch Pro 5: best dual-display battery compromise

Why buy it: The TicWatch Pro 5 placed a low-power secondary display above its OLED panel. That arrangement let the watch show basic information while using less energy than a conventional always-on OLED display. Mobvoi claimed up to 80 hours of use, and the watch used Qualcomm’s Snapdragon W5+ Gen 1 platform.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why hesitate: It launched with Wear OS 3.5, older than the Wear OS 5 watches in this 2025 list. That matters for current Google services, update runway, app compatibility, and watch-face support. Google’s Wear OS documentation illustrates how the platform continues to evolve. The TicWatch is also physically large, Android-focused, and lacks a cellular version in the model covered by the 2025 roundup.

Best alternative: The OnePlus Watch 3 offers a newer Wear OS generation and stronger all-round case for most Android buyers. The TicWatch remains interesting if its secondary display and discounted price matter more than software longevity.

9. Withings ScanWatch 2: best hybrid smartwatch

Why buy it: The ScanWatch 2 looks like a conventional analog watch, with a small grayscale OLED display rather than a full touchscreen. It comes in 38mm and 42mm sizes and tracks ECG, AFib, sleep, temperature, blood oxygen, notifications, and workouts. Its multi-week battery makes it a particularly good choice for sleep tracking and for people who dislike charging every night.

Withings currently lists up to 35 days of battery life on its U.S. product page, while launch-era materials stated 30 days. Both claims need a date label rather than being silently combined. Compatibility is listed as iOS 16 or later and Android 12 or later in Withings support documentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Health qualification: Withings says the ECG software supports AFib detection, and the relevant functionality has FDA clearance documented in the FDA 510(k) record. That clearance applies to a specific feature, not to the entire watch, and AFib detection is not a diagnosis. Withings itself advises users to consult a healthcare professional.

aeac Smart Watch for Women, AMOLED Ultra-Clear Screen Activity Trackers with Heart Rate/Sleep/SpO2 Monitor, Smartwatch for iPhone/Samsung/Android, 110+ Sport Modes (Rose Gold, S/M/L, Rose Gold)

Main drawback: The small display, limited notifications, and lack of a full third-party app ecosystem mean it cannot replace an Apple Watch or Wear OS watch for calls, replies, payments, apps, or rich navigation. Some coaching, readiness, and professional-review features are tied to Withings+. Best alternative: Garmin Forerunner 265 for training, or Apple Watch Series 10 and Pixel Watch 3 for full smartwatch interaction.

10. TAG Heuer Connected Calibre E4: luxury smartwatch pick for the 2025 market

Why buy it: The E4 existed for buyers who valued luxury-watch materials, finishing, brand identity, sapphire crystal, ceramic, steel, and titanium more than technical value. The 42mm model was more wearable than the 45mm version for many wrists and offered a more traditional luxury-watch presence than most touchscreen competitors.

Why it is not a current recommendation: TAG Heuer’s current U.S. product pages mark E4 models as discontinued. It can remain in a retrospective 2025 list, but it should not be presented as an undated buy-now recommendation. The 42mm model’s one-day battery and older Wear OS hardware were already significant compromises; discontinuation makes future software support and parts availability even more important. See the current product status.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best alternative: Buy a current Apple, Samsung, Google, or Garmin watch for better technical value. Choose the TAG Heuer only if luxury design is the primary reason to own a smartwatch and the seller clearly explains warranty and support.

11. Garmin Forerunner 265: best smartwatch for runners

Why buy it: The Forerunner 265 was the specialist recommendation for runners who wanted structured training rather than the most phone-like watch. Garmin’s platform includes training and recovery metrics, sleep tracking, Body Battery, PacePro, music storage, incident detection, LiveTrack, Garmin Pay, and multi-band GPS in supported modes. The Forerunner announcement explains the product’s fitness focus.

Battery: Garmin rates the 46mm model for up to 13 days in smartwatch mode and up to 20 hours in GPS-only mode. Those are useful categories, but GPS, notifications, sensors, music, and display settings all change the result. The smaller 265S is the better physical fit for some wrists, though its battery and screen proportions differ.

Ownership: Garmin does not require a recurring subscription for the core watch and training platform. You give up some third-party apps, polished messaging, calls, and voice-assistant features compared with Apple Watch or Wear OS. Best alternative: The Pixel Watch 3 for a more complete general smartwatch, or the epix Pro for mapping and serious outdoor use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

12. Garmin epix Pro (Gen 2): best smartwatch for serious outdoor sports

Why buy it: The epix Pro was the most capable outdoor-sports option in this group for hikers, cyclists, runners, and athletes who value maps, navigation, battery life, rugged construction, and detailed training data. It offers 42mm, 47mm, and 51mm cases, advanced sports profiles, maps, an altimeter, compass, thermometer, heart-rate and Pulse Ox sensors, a flashlight, and 10 ATM water resistance.

Battery: Size and display mode are crucial. Garmin’s figures range from up to 10 days for the 42mm model to up to 31 days for the 51mm model with wrist gesture enabled. Always-on display reduces those figures substantially. The Garmin battery table should be read by size and mode, not summarized as a blanket 31-day claim.

Main drawback: It is expensive, especially in the 51mm size, and its interface has a steeper learning curve than Apple Watch, Pixel Watch, or Galaxy Watch. It is also more of a training computer than a communications device. Best alternative: The Forerunner 265 for running at a lower level of complexity, or Apple Watch Ultra 2 for iPhone owners who prioritize apps and calls alongside outdoor durability.

Which type of smartwatch do you actually need?

The twelve watches above are not interchangeable. A full smartwatch, a running watch, a hybrid health watch, and a luxury smartwatch solve different problems.

Maps, navigation, ruggedness, and long outdoor activities Garmin epix Pro or Apple Watch Ultra 2 Low weight, low price, or compactness

Battery life: compare the mode, not just the number

A smartwatch rated for 18 hours and one rated for five days may be designed for entirely different charging patterns. Before comparing them, check five things:

  1. Case size: Larger models usually have more battery capacity. The epix Pro’s 31-day figure belongs to the 51mm model under a specified display setting, not the entire range.
  2. Display mode: Always-on display is usually much less efficient than wrist-raise or gesture mode.
  3. GPS and LTE: Route recording, phone-free calls, streaming, and weak cellular signals consume substantially more power.
  4. Sensor use: Continuous heart rate, blood oxygen, temperature, sleep tracking, and frequent workouts all affect endurance.
  5. Power-saving mode: A 36-hour or 12-day claim may involve reduced apps, animations, notifications, route information, or smart replies.

For a one-day charging routine, choose Apple Watch Series 10, Pixel Watch 3, or Galaxy Watch 7. For several days with full smartwatch features, the OnePlus Watch 3 is the strongest 2025 Android choice. For fitness-watch endurance, the Forerunner 265 and epix Pro are better. For the least frequent charging, the ScanWatch 2 is in a different category entirely.

GPS, LTE, and replacing your phone

Connected GPS uses the phone’s location signal. Built-in GPS lets the watch record a route without the phone. Dual-frequency or multi-band GPS can improve reception in difficult environments such as urban canyons or dense tree cover, although it uses more battery and is not automatically perfect.

The Apple Watch Ultra 2 has L1+L5 precision dual-frequency GPS. OnePlus advertises dual-frequency GPS on the Watch 3 and Watch 2R. Garmin’s sports watches provide built-in GPS and supported multi-band modes. A watch with GPS can still require a phone for calls, messages, streaming music, payments, emergency connectivity, or downloading maps.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Phone-free calling and messaging generally require an LTE-capable model and a compatible carrier plan. Music may require downloaded tracks or a streaming subscription. Wi-Fi can cover some functions, but it is not a substitute for mobile service everywhere. Check carrier compatibility and monthly pricing before paying extra for cellular hardware.

Health features: useful signals, not a diagnosis

Health functions are valuable when understood narrowly. They should not be used as a reason to ignore symptoms or delay medical care.

  • AFib detection: A notification or ECG interpretation can identify a pattern that merits medical attention, but it is not a diagnosis of every irregular rhythm or heart condition.
  • Blood oxygen: Readings can be affected by fit, movement, skin contact, temperature, and software or regional restrictions. Do not treat a consumer reading as a clinical measurement in every situation.

  • Fall detection, crash detection, and loss-of-pulse detection: Safety features that can fail to detect an event or contact emergency services. They require correct setup, connectivity where applicable, and regional support.
  • Temperature and menstrual-cycle features: Useful for trends and estimates, but affected by wear time, fit, individual variation, software, and applicable regulatory limits.

Regulatory language also needs precision. FDA clearance generally applies to a particular feature or software function, not to the entire watch and not to every health claim made in marketing. Availability can depend on country, age, phone, software version, and local authorization.

Comfort, size, and design

More features do not make a watch better if you cannot wear it overnight or during exercise. Case diameter, thickness, weight, crown or buttons, band design, and screen shape matter as much as sensors.

  • Small wrists: Start with the 38mm ScanWatch 2, 40mm Galaxy Watch 7, 41mm Pixel Watch 3, 42mm Apple Watch Series 10, or Garmin Forerunner 265S. Confirm thickness and band fit as well as diameter.
  • Large screen: The 45mm Pixel Watch 3, 46mm Apple Watch Series 10, 44mm Galaxy Watch 7, and larger Garmin models are easier to read during workouts but take up more wrist space.
  • Rugged use: The Ultra 2 and epix Pro are designed for demanding use, but their larger cases can be unnecessarily uncomfortable for ordinary sleep tracking.
  • Traditional appearance: The ScanWatch 2 is the least visibly technical. The Galaxy Watch 6 Classic adds a rotating physical bezel. The TAG Heuer E4 offers luxury finishing, but its discontinued status makes it a poor default purchase.

Band interchangeability and replacement cost also matter. Proprietary bands and chargers are easy to lose, and an inexpensive watch can become less attractive when replacement accessories or LTE service are included.

Water resistance and durability: what the ratings do and do not mean

Do not treat 5 ATM, IP68, MIL-STD-810H, and 100m water resistance as interchangeable labels.

  • 5 ATM: A pressure rating measured under defined conditions. It does not automatically mean the watch is suitable for diving, hot tubs, saunas, high-pressure water, or every swimming situation.
  • IP68: Dust and water-ingress protection under a specified test. It is not a lifetime guarantee, particularly after impact, seal damage, chemical exposure, or repair.
  • MIL-STD: Testing against selected environmental conditions. It does not prove that a watch is indestructible.
  • 100m water resistance: A stated water-resistance rating that still has activity and depth limits. Apple’s Ultra 2, for example, is rated for recreational scuba diving to 40m under Apple’s stated conditions, not unlimited diving.

Water resistance can decline with age, knocks, chemicals, heat, and damaged seals. A cracked screen or repaired case should change your assumptions about water protection.

Subscriptions and the real cost of ownership

Most of these watches have usable core functions without a recurring subscription. Apple Watch, Garmin Forerunner, Garmin epix, OnePlus Watch, and Galaxy Watch do not require a subscription for basic operation and core fitness features. Pixel Watch basic health and fitness tracking also works without Fitbit Premium.

However, budget for the services that may surround the watch:

  • Fitbit Premium: Some advanced Pixel Watch insights, coaching, and detailed content require it. Launch bundles can include a trial period, but the duration and price are not permanent specifications.
  • Withings+: Some coaching, readiness, and professional-review features are subscription-linked. The ScanWatch 2’s basic watch and health functions should not be confused with every premium analysis feature.
  • Apple Fitness+: Optional. It is not required for basic Apple Watch operation.
  • LTE: Cellular service usually adds a monthly carrier charge, even if the watch itself is purchased outright.
  • Music and navigation: Streaming, map data, or third-party services may carry separate fees. Downloaded content can reduce the need for a connection but does not make every service free.

Also consider the charger, replacement bands, repairability, and whether your health data remains accessible if you cancel a premium plan or change ecosystems.

What we would not buy blindly

  • TAG Heuer Connected Calibre E4: Its luxury design was a legitimate 2025 reason to buy, but current U.S. pages mark it discontinued. Confirm software, warranty, battery, and parts support.
  • Mobvoi TicWatch Pro 5: The dual display is clever, but Wear OS 3.5 is older than the main 2025 alternatives. Buy only with a clear understanding of its update and app-support position.
  • Galaxy Watch 7 for a non-Samsung phone: It may pair, but Samsung’s ECG, irregular-rhythm, and sleep-apnea features have compatibility restrictions. Check the exact phone before purchase.
  • Any long-battery claim without its mode: If the number depends on Power Saver or wrist-gesture display mode, ask which functions are disabled before comparing it with normal smartwatch operation.
  • Any health claim presented as medical certainty: Look for the exact feature, regulatory status, region, age limits, and limitations rather than accepting phrases such as medical-grade smartwatch.

Why some familiar watches are not in this 12-watch list

This is a dated editorial selection, not a complete ranking of every watch sold in 2025. Models such as Garmin Venu 3, Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra, Apple Watch SE, Amazfit Active 2, and Polar watches were not selected for these twelve category slots. Their omission does not prove they were bad purchases; it means the list emphasizes the particular winners above: iPhone integration, broad Android use, Samsung integration, battery life, budget Wear OS, hybrid design, running, outdoor sport, and luxury design.

Likewise, the Forerunner 265 and ScanWatch 2 should not be judged as failed Apple Watch substitutes simply because they have fewer apps. They are intentionally better at different things: training depth and battery life in Garmin’s case, and discreet health tracking and endurance in Withings’ case.

  2. Do you have Android?

    • Pixel or another compatible Android phone and balanced smartwatch features: Pixel Watch 3.
    • Android battery life is your priority: OnePlus Watch 3.
    • Lower-cost Wear OS is your priority: OnePlus Watch 2R.
    • Running and structured training: Garmin Forerunner 265.
    • Serious hiking, cycling, maps, and outdoor sport: Garmin epix Pro.
    • Traditional physical watch controls: Galaxy Watch 6 Classic.
  3. Do you refuse daily charging?
    • Choose Withings ScanWatch 2 for hybrid health tracking.
    • Choose Garmin for full fitness-watch capability and long battery life.
    • Choose OnePlus Watch 3 if you want Android apps as well as several days of battery.

Finally, if you are buying in 2026 rather than researching the 2025 market, compare the current replacement models and software support before purchasing old stock. The best answer in this article is tied to the phone, feature priorities, and market date—not a permanent ranking.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Apple Watch Series 10 compatible with Android phones?

No. Apple Watch Series 10 requires an iPhone XS or later with the applicable iOS version. Android users should consider Pixel Watch, Galaxy Watch, OnePlus, Garmin, or Withings instead.

Do I need LTE on my smartwatch?

No. Bluetooth and Wi-Fi models can use most smartwatch functions near a phone. LTE is useful for phone-free calls, messages, streaming, and some emergency functions, but it normally requires a compatible carrier plan and recurring fee.

Which 2025 smartwatch had the longest battery life?

Among full Wear OS watches, OnePlus claimed up to five days for the OnePlus Watch 3. Garmin watches lasted longer in smartwatch or fitness modes, while Withings claimed up to 35 days for the ScanWatch 2. These are different products and test modes, so the figures are not directly equivalent.

Are smartwatch ECG, blood-oxygen, and sleep-apnea features medical diagnoses?

No. They are consumer screening or monitoring features with specific limitations. ECG and AFib functionality applies to particular recordings or algorithms, blood-oxygen readings can be affected by fit and movement, and sleep-apnea notifications are not a substitute for a clinical sleep study. Feature availability also varies by country, phone, age, and software.

Can I use a Samsung Galaxy Watch 7 with any Android phone?

The watch supports compatible Android 11 or later phones, but Samsung restricts some Samsung Health Monitor features—including ECG, irregular-rhythm notifications, and sleep-apnea functionality—to compatible Samsung Galaxy phones. Verify your exact phone before buying.

Is the TAG Heuer Connected Calibre E4 still a good smartwatch purchase?

It was the luxury pick in the 2025 market because of its materials and design. TAG Heuer’s current U.S. pages mark E4 models discontinued, so it should not be treated as a default current recommendation. Confirm software support, warranty, battery condition, and parts availability before buying one.

The Bottom Line

For the 2025 U.S. market, buy the Apple Watch Series 10 for an iPhone, the Pixel Watch 3 for most Android phones, or the OnePlus Watch 3 if Android battery life matters most. Choose the Galaxy Watch 7 for a Samsung phone, the Garmin Forerunner 265 for running, the Garmin epix Pro for serious outdoor sport, and the Withings ScanWatch 2 if multi-week battery life and a traditional design matter more than apps. Treat the TAG Heuer E4 and TicWatch Pro 5 as informed, dated exceptions—not automatic 2026 purchases.
