What the Biver AB is

How the JCB-004 works
Manual winding and five-day autonomy
JCB-004 is Biver’s first manually wound calibre. Its twin-barrel arrangement stores a stated 120 hours of power when fully wound—five days of autonomy on paper. The 3 Hz rate is paired with 32 jewels. A manual movement makes winding part of ownership: the crown supplies the energy, while the power-reserve display shows when that task is approaching.

Hacking seconds and zero-reset
Pulling the crown to set the time stops the balance through hacking seconds. The zero-reset system also returns the small-seconds hand to zero, giving the wearer a clean reference for synchronising the watch. These are practical setting functions, not decorative additions.
Finishing visible through the back
The mainplate and bridges are made from PD210 white gold. Through the sapphire back, the architecture exposes circular graining, sandblasting, mirror polishing and hand finishing. Because there is no automatic rotor covering the movement, the decoration remains continuously legible when the watch is viewed from behind.

Why a simple display can demand more work
Biver’s own explanation of the time-only format is that simplicity leaves nowhere to conceal an imperfect decision. On a crowded dial, a small inconsistency can disappear among complications; on a restrained dial, every hand, marker, edge and transition is exposed as the hands move.

Biver has described the broader time-only programme in similar terms. Its enamel dials are reported to require more than 10 hours of enamelling and six hours of polishing each. The brand’s related JCB-003 work combines pocket-watch references with a micro-rotor, guilloche, skeletonised components, bevelled edges and sculpted interior angles. Those examples explain the quality argument behind the AB: a simple indication does not imply a simple build.
What makes the AB different from other time-only luxury watches
A useful comparison is not a league table but a checklist of what each watch prioritises. The AB’s combination is unusual: steel practicality, precious-material dial work, a highly decorated manual movement and a 120-hour reserve.

Is the Biver AB worth CHF 68,000?
That depends on what “worth” means. If value means maximum functions per franc, the AB is difficult to justify: it deliberately omits a calendar, chronograph and other complications. If value means the quality of execution in a restrained format, its case is clearer. You are paying for a steel watch whose dial uses gold and onyx, whose movement uses PD210 white gold and extensive visible finishing, and whose setting system and five-day reserve are engineered rather than merely styled.
No standardised laboratory tests or controlled value ranking against named competitors establish that the AB performs better than every other time-only luxury watch.
