What the 2021 French-watch roundup covered
Thor Svaboe’s Time+Tide feature, published 2 May 2021, profiled five small French watch brands through one representative model apiece. Its editorial argument was that vintage-inflected design could give independent brands a distinctive voice. Svaboe wrote: “From Baltic to Serica, the French have tapped into the vintage design vein with a certain savoir faire, resulting in a sharper and perhaps more authentic take on diver’s watches and tool watches than established brands.” That is the author’s opinion, not a measured finding about the watch industry.

How the five watches differ
Divers: Baltic and YEMA
Baltic’s featured Aquascaphe Dual Crown paired a relatively compact 39 mm case with an internal bezel operated by a second crown. YEMA’s Superman was the more overtly dive-focused option in the roundup: the described 2021 configuration was rated to 300 m, compared with 200 m for the Baltic. Those ratings apply to the historical examples described, not necessarily to current versions.

The Serica 4512 brought field-watch proportions and a manually wound movement to the list. At 37.7 mm, it was the smallest case dimension specified among the five examples. The 2021 article emphasized restrained branding and legibility rather than a high-complication feature set.
Distinctive sports-watch design: MARCH LA.B and Charlie Paris
MARCH LA.B’s AM2 stood apart through its angular, square-cushion case and green sunray dial—more 1970s sports-watch styling than conventional diver or field-watch cues. Charlie Paris’s Concordia was presented as an expedition-ready sports watch, with the stated 300 m rating and a Mecha Quartz movement. The 2021 article lists no water-resistance figure for the AM2, so the two should not be compared on that measure.
