The Nodus Sector Deep – Damascus is an $800 automatic dive watch designed and assembled in Los Angeles. Its standout feature is a black, DLC-coated Damascus steel bezel, paired with a manufacturer-rated 500-meter water resistance. Cool Material reviewer Beau Hayhoe called it “a tool watch extraordinaire, the best one I’ve encountered in recent memory”—an attributed review opinion, not a category-wide test result.
What makes the Sector Deep – Damascus a tool watch?
A tool watch is built around practical use rather than ornament alone. Dive, field, pilot, racing and GMT watches are common examples, each organized around different needs. The Sector Deep is a dive watch: its 120-click unidirectional bezel supports elapsed-time tracking, its dial and bezel are fully lumed, and its screw-down crown and 500-meter rating are part of its water-resistance design. That rating is the manufacturer’s specification; it does not by itself establish a particular diving certification.

The bezel is the model’s defining visual and functional distinction. It is made from black DLC-coated Damascus steel and combines 60-minute timing with 12-hour markings. Nodus says the forged material’s grain varies by component, so the bezel pattern on an individual watch will not be identical to another’s.

Nodus lists the watch at $800. The company describes the Sector Deep as designed and assembled in Los Angeles; that does not mean every component is manufactured there.

The movement figures are manufacturer specifications, not independently measured results here. The Miyota 8315 is Japan-origin, while Nodus handles the watch’s design and assembly in Los Angeles.
How its design supports everyday use
The 38 mm case, 47 mm lug-to-lug measurement and short lugs give buyers concrete fit dimensions to compare against a watch they already wear. Thickness is 13.6 mm, so this is not an especially thin watch. Whether it fits comfortably depends on wrist shape and personal preference, not diameter alone.

Cool Material’s reviewer describes the watch as comfortable and points to its destro crown, rounded caseback, and orange and white hands as practical details. Those are the reviewer’s wear impressions, rather than independent hands-on findings for this article. The blue-glowing lume and contrasting hands are intended to support legibility, while the unidirectional bezel offers elapsed-time tracking without relying on a phone or another display.
The bracelet’s 20-to-16 mm taper, quick-release spring bars and Extension Module clasp address fit and adjustability. Nodus lists a 20 mm lug width, so strap alternatives should be sized accordingly; compatibility and fit still depend on the specific strap and its end configuration.

Is it the best tool watch under $1,000?
“Best” depends on what the buyer values. The Cool Material review names this exact model its favorite tool watch encountered recently, but the available evidence does not establish an objective winner across all watches below $1,000. The Sector Deep – Damascus makes a strong case for someone who wants a compact-for-a-dive-watch case, unusually high stated water resistance and a distinctive Damascus bezel. Those features do not automatically make it the best everyday choice for every wrist or use.
Other Nodus watches illustrate the trade-offs. The official Sector Deep collection lists the Pioneer Forge at $675 and the Damascus at $800, with stock varying by variant. Gear Patrol’s August 2025 coverage describes the Contrail GMT with 200 m water resistance and the Duality II with 300 m; those models offer different functions and are comparison candidates, not proof of a ranking. A GMT function may matter more to a frequent traveler, while the Damascus model’s bezel and 500 m manufacturer rating may be more compelling to someone prioritizing dive-watch styling and specifications.
