Its hands swing as the metronome beat, tempo and sound are adjustable, and six selectable tones are built in. The result is wonderfully strange: a compact, Bauhaus-like watch that is more entertaining to operate than it is quick to read.
What is the Seiko Metronome watch?
Made by Seiko Instruments rather than the Seiko watch division most people know, the Metronome was designed for musicians but has become a curiosity for anyone who likes purposeful, unconventional watches. Reference SMW006A is the model most often associated with the watch’s international coverage.

At a glance, the dial looks restrained and almost Bauhaus-inspired. Closer inspection reveals a busy rehaut marked with musical notes and tempo graduations. That contrast is the point: it can pass as a simple dressy-casual watch from a distance, then reveal its specialist purpose when the controls are used.

- Start the metronome: Press the mode button. The hands move to 12 o’clock and begin swinging like a mechanical metronome balance.
- Set the tempo: Use the right-side controls to raise or lower the beats per minute.
- Choose sound: A separate control switches the traditional ticking sound on or off.
- Select a tone: Another mode offers six electronic tones. Pressing the mode button again returns the watch to normal timekeeping.
The watch continues keeping time while the metronome-related functions are in use. The dial provides A or B-flat choices, with three pitches for each note; the review by Michael Stockton estimated 42 possible cadence choices when the available settings are combined.

What it feels like to wear
At 36.5 mm across and 39.6 mm from lug to lug, the case is relatively compact by current watch standards. The 18 mm strap and 10 mm thickness keep it discreet on the wrist, while the leather band suits the instrument-like character better than a sporty bracelet would.
The visual appeal comes from the mismatch between familiar watch proportions and an unusually technical dial. It is a conversation piece without needing an oversized case or loud colors.
Rank #2
- 2 tones of metronome
- Tempo range 40-208 bpm (39 levels continuous)
- Number of time to mark 0, 2, 3, 4 and 6
The biggest compromise: ordinary time reading
The hands are excellent for demonstrating the metronome function but less successful as conventional watch hands. The skeletonized hour and minute hands resemble each other, and the red tip on the hour hand can be difficult to pick out quickly. If your priority is glancing at the time in a hurry, a conventional three-hand watch will do the job better.
The mineral crystal and snap-on back also signal a practical, accessible product rather than a high-end instrument. Its water-contact rating should be treated as protection for routine splashes, not as a reason to swim with it.
Rank #3
- Clock Function
- Easy Volume Control
- High Contrast LCD
Is the Seiko Metronome worth buying?
It makes sense when you want
- A real, wearable metronome rather than a novelty dial.
- A small watch with an unusual story and visible mechanical-style motion.
- Tempo adjustment, optional ticking and multiple pitch tones on the wrist.
- A musician’s tool that also works as an eccentric design object.
Look elsewhere when you need
- Instantly legible hour and minute hands.
- Serious water resistance or a more durable sports-watch construction.
- A watch that is easy to replace through normal worldwide retail channels.
For the right owner, the appeal is not technical perfection. It is the fact that the watch does something few watches attempt, and does so in a case small enough to wear every day.
Where can you buy the Seiko Metronome SMW006A?
The model was primarily intended for the Japanese market. Stockton’s November 3, 2022 review discussed Japanese pricing of about ¥20,000 (approximately €138 in that article’s context) and overseas listings around €300. Those figures are historical, not current quotes; present prices depend on stock, seller, condition, shipping and import costs.
Rank #4
- Model: SQ60 White Model
- Dimensions (W x H x D): 2.4 x 3.9 x 1.1 inches (62 x 100 x 29.5 mm)
- Tempo: 40 - 208 times/minute (fixed in 39 steps)
- Beats: 0, 2, 3, 4, 6
- Standard oscillation sound A4, B♭4 Standard pitch: A4 = 440 ~ 444 Hz (1 Hz increments)
Because distribution is uneven, buyers typically encounter it through Japanese-market watch sellers, international marketplaces or auction listings rather than a dependable global Seiko retail page. Check that a listing identifies the exact reference, includes the original operating module and sound functions, and states whether the battery has been replaced.

Why is the Seiko Metronome hard to find?
Its limited regional intent explains much of the scarcity. Seiko Instruments produced it for a specialist audience, and the watch never became a broadly stocked international model. Once Japanese inventory is exhausted, overseas supply is made up largely of reseller and second-hand listings, so availability and prices can change sharply.
Best Value
- Clock Function
- Easy Volume Control
- High Contrast LCD
That scarcity is the “forbidden fruit” aspect: the watch is relatively modest in specification, yet difficult to obtain outside its home market. Paying a premium may be reasonable for a complete, verified example, but the 2022 overseas prices should not be used as a guarantee of today’s value.
Bottom line
The Seiko Metronome is seriously cool because it is honest about its gimmick: the hands really swing, the tempo really changes, sound can be enabled, and tones can be selected. SMW006A is compact and wearable, but its weak everyday legibility, basic construction and Japan-focused distribution demand realistic expectations. Buy it for the musical function and design character, not as the clearest or most robust watch in your collection.
