First check the material and finish: plated, oxidized, antique, gemstone-set, detailed, and hollow pieces can be damaged by routine polishing.
Before cleaning, identify the silver and its finish
Check the hallmark and the maker’s care instructions before using any cleaner. Sterling silver is commonly marked .925; that mark indicates the silver standard, but it does not tell you whether a piece has an intentional darkened finish, plating, stones, glued components, or delicate construction that changes how it should be cleaned.

Tiffany says it instituted the .925 sterling-silver standard in 1851; that is the company’s historical claim, not a cleaning-performance measure. Its care guidance also notes that sterling silver tarnishes, especially with exposure to salt air and sulfur-containing products such as rubber bands and some papers. Tiffany’s care guide and sterling-silver FAQ offer maker-specific advice.
How to clean plain sterling silver
- Set up a clean work area. Work in good light over a clean, soft cotton or flannel surface. For conservation-style handling, the National Park Service recommends ventilation and nitrile gloves; avoid chlorine-processed gloves, which can tarnish silver. See the NPS Conserve O Gram.
- Remove loose dirt. Wipe gently with a soft, lint-free cloth. Do not use paper towels, rough sponges, steel wool, or hard abrasives.
- Use cleaner sparingly. Put a little suitable silver cleaner or quality silver polish on the cloth, rather than pouring it onto the jewelry or into openings and settings. Rub gently and briefly. Tiffany recommends a good-quality polish and advises against dip polishes.
- Rinse and dry fully. Rinse thoroughly with warm water, then blot and dry completely. Keep moisture from collecting in hollow sections or around fragile and porous materials.
- Buff lightly. Use a soft silver-polishing cloth to restore shine without prolonged rubbing.
Silver-polishing cloth is the most direct tool for light tarnish and final buffing. A suitable non-dip polish can help with heavier tarnish on compatible, plain sterling, but it requires careful application and rinsing. Avoid treating a dip polish as a shortcut: immersion can reach details and vulnerable materials in ways that are difficult to control.

When ordinary silver polish is not suitable
Oxidized silver
The dark areas on oxidized silver are an intentional finish, not simply tarnish to remove. Tiffany recommends a clean, dry cloth and warns that overzealous polishing can wear away the finish. Do not use silver polish unless the maker specifically approves it.
Silver-plated jewelry
Silver plate has a thin silver layer. The Canadian Conservation Institute warns that polishing can damage or remove that layer, exposing the base metal. Use the maker’s care instructions; for valuable or badly tarnished plated pieces, ask a qualified jeweler or conservator before polishing.

Antique, detailed, or valuable pieces
Engraving, chasing, embossing, and surface details can be softened or over-cleaned by abrasives and dip products. If a piece has significant value or provenance, fragile construction, or attached materials, consult a qualified jeweler or conservator rather than experimenting.

Why tarnish returns—and why not to polish constantly
The Canadian Conservation Institute describes tarnish as a dark surface layer associated mainly with silver sulfide and other sulfur-containing compounds. It can be removed mechanically, chemically, or electrochemically, but removal also takes away some underlying silver. As the Institute explains, tarnish removal “takes away a certain amount of underlying silver along with the surface layer of tarnish.” Choose the least aggressive method that works, and polish only when needed. Read CCI Notes 9/7 for more on the conservation trade-offs.
Silver can tarnish again through exposure to sulfur-containing materials, salt air, and other environmental factors. Tiffany advises removing jewelry before swimming, bathing, exercising, household chores, meal preparation, and applying cosmetics or fragrances. It also warns against household cleaning products, bleach, chlorine, and other strong chemicals.

How to store silver to slow tarnish
- Store pieces dry in tarnish-resistant cloth or a lined silver box.
- Give each piece its own space to reduce rubbing and scratching.
- In humid conditions, a small desiccant packet can help keep the storage area dry.
- Keep silver away from rubber products, which can release sulfur compounds associated with tarnishing and corrosion.
