Its revival brought archival styling back into Timex’s lineup, then grew beyond the original hand-wound format to include automatic watches and, according to 2026 reporting, quartz chronographs. The Marlin is an important part of Timex’s revival story—but available sources do not quantify how much it contributed to the company’s wider resurgence.
When did the Timex Marlin first come out?
The Marlin debuted in the 1950s, according to Timex’s 2024 annual report. Its prominence followed in the 1960s: the report says it matured into a centerpiece of Timex’s broader collection, while the company’s own history describes it as a mid-century icon. That distinction matters: the watch originated in the 1950s, but its identity as a signature Timex design took shape over the following decade.
Timex associates the original Marlin with minimalist design and distinctive hour markers. The brand also recalls the watches appearing in televised durability tests and characterizes them as accurate and exceptionally durable. Those are Timex’s descriptions of its own products, rather than independent performance measurements. Timex’s history of the watches that made the brand gives the company’s account of the Marlin’s place in that story.
Why did Timex bring the Marlin back?
Timex began reintroducing archive designs as modern reissues in 2017. In a 2025 retrospective, Timex Group executive Giorgio Galli singled out the Marlin as a product that helped bring the brand to wider attention. He recalled a 36 mm model launched in the 1950s and said it was relaunched in 2017, adding that it “immediately opened different eyes to the brand.” That is an executive’s qualitative assessment, not a sales figure or proof that the Marlin alone drove Timex’s broader revival.

The appeal of the reissue was the combination of an archival look with a current product. Timex’s description emphasizes the Marlin’s simple forms and distinct markers; the company’s contemporary range has since interpreted that design heritage in several different watch formats.
How did the reissue change over time?
The Marlin did not remain a single hand-wound watch. Timex expanded the collection with larger cases and different movements and complications. Specifications vary by model, so the measurements below describe particular releases, not the entire Marlin range.

What changed between the original Marlin and the reissue?
The reissue strategy preserved a recognizable design language while allowing the watch to change in size, movement, and function. The 2017 model described by Galli was 36 mm; a currently cited hand-wound reissue is 34 mm. The 2018 automatic moved to 40 mm, and the 2023 Sub-Dial used a 39 mm case with additional displays. These are distinct models, not a single specification evolving in a straight line.
The winding routine is another practical difference. A hand-wound watch needs its crown turned by the wearer to wind the mainspring. An automatic mechanical watch uses motion from the wearer to wind it while it is worn. The reported Neo Classic Chronographs introduce a further branch: quartz movement rather than either mechanical winding system.

How much did the Marlin contribute to Timex’s revival?
Galli’s 2025 comments make clear that Timex leadership viewed the Marlin relaunch as a meaningful moment for the brand’s visibility. But the available company and executive accounts do not provide Marlin reissue sales, market-share figures, audience-growth measurements, or a quantified share of Timex’s revival. It is accurate to call the Marlin a breakout product in the company’s telling; it is not possible from those sources to measure its precise commercial impact.
