The Breguet Type XX Ref. 3800 is a 1995 revival that has itself become a vintage-era watch: it carried forward the aviation identity, black dial, rotating bezel and flyback chronograph of the Type XX line, but paired them with an automatic movement and a later design. It is best understood as a reinterpretation—not a mechanically unchanged copy of the original military watches.
When did Breguet bring back the Type XX?
Swatch Group’s official archive dates the third-generation Type XX Ref. 3800 Aéronavale revival to 1995. The model arrived without a date display. It followed the earlier French military Type 20/Type XX watches, but it was not simply one of those watches reproduced with new parts: the Ref. 3800 translated the aviation chronograph identity into a later, self-winding wristwatch. Swatch Group’s Type XX archive identifies the revival and distinguishes it from the subsequent date-equipped Ref. 3820.
How does the Ref. 3800 fit the Type XX history?
From aviation instruments to military chronographs
The Type XX story grew from aviation’s need for instruments suited to demanding operating conditions. Breguet historian Emmanuel Breguet describes a broader history of aviation products, writing: “A study of archives reveals that numerous ‘special’ products, i.e. suited to the particular constraints of the aeronautical environment, were introduced from the 1930s onwards.” That is historical context for Breguet’s aviation work, not a statement specifically about the Ref. 3800. His account traces the original Type XX movement family to hand-wound Valjoux 22-based calibres, with approximately 35 hours of power reserve. That figure belongs to the earlier movement, not the 3800. Emmanuel Breguet’s history of the Type XX’s origins also cautions that no Type 20 specification document corresponding to the later Type 21 technical program had been found; Type 21 requirements should not be presented as official Type 20 specifications.
The 1995 Ref. 3800 Aéronavale
The Ref. 3800 retained the black dial, rotating bezel and flyback chronograph function associated with the Type XX, while changing the mechanical approach to a self-winding movement. Breguet’s instructions describe the watch as an automatic flyback chronograph, with a stated 10 bar (100 m) water-resistance specification and approximately 40 hours of running time when off the wrist. These are figures in the manufacturer’s documentation, not the results of a fresh water-resistance test. Breguet’s Ref. 3800 instructions for use provide the operating details.

The subsequent Ref. 3820 Transatlantique
The archive identifies the Ref. 3820 Transatlantique as the model that followed the 3800 and added a date. That distinction is a useful first check when identifying a watch: the 3800 Aéronavale is the no-date revival, while the 3820 is the later date-equipped reference. The archive’s model history supports this chronology.
How does the flyback function work?
A flyback chronograph lets the wearer reset a running timing measurement and begin another immediately, in one continuous operation. On a conventional chronograph, the usual sequence is stop, reset, then start again. The flyback shortcut is useful when timing successive events, which helps explain its relevance to aviation timing. It is a chronograph function, not an automatic winding feature: the Ref. 3800 is self-winding because of its movement, independently of how the flyback operates.

Is the Breguet Type XX 3800 a reissue or a vintage watch?
It is both, depending on what the label is meant to convey. “Reissue” describes its role in the Type XX lineage: the 1995 Ref. 3800 revived the name and key design and functional cues. “Vintage” describes the watch’s age and period. Calling it a reissue should not imply that its movement or construction is identical to the original military Type 20/Type XX watches. Keeping the generations distinct prevents a common confusion: the original hand-wound military lineage, the automatic 1995 Ref. 3800, and subsequent models such as the date-equipped Ref. 3820 are related, but not interchangeable.

- Dial, hands and bezel: Check originality and condition against credible documentation for that individual watch; no universal configuration is established for every example.
- Case condition: Inspect for wear, damage and polishing. A polished case can differ from its original edges and profile.
- Chronograph operation: Have the start, stop, reset and flyback functions assessed by a qualified watchmaker rather than relying only on appearance.
- Service history: Ask for dated service records and arrange a watch-specific assessment. A running watch is not, by itself, evidence of recent service or water resistance.
- Box, papers and provenance: Verify exactly what accompanies the watch and whether serial and ownership documentation support the seller’s account.
Breguet says it does not supply spare parts directly to customers and directs owners to its boutiques, official retailers or service centres. For service options, use Breguet’s official service guidance; availability and the work required should be confirmed for the specific watch.
