How can you identify a 709-2 movement?
Watch Movements Archive says the movement is marked “TISSOT” on the wheel-train bridge and “709-2” beneath the balance wheel. If you are checking a watch, those markings are more useful than its dial appearance alone. Opening a watch case can damage the case, movement or seals, so have a watchmaker inspect it if you are not equipped to do so safely.
A 709-2 marking identifies the caliber, not the watch’s exact model, reference or manufacture year. The consulted sources do not provide a verified list of Tissot watch references using this caliber. A dial photograph or a general description as a ladies’ watch is not enough to attribute a model.

How does the 709-2 differ from the 709-1?
17jewels.info describes several changes in the 709-2: the minute-wheel bearing and pivot, setting-lever spring and dial-side cutouts differ, and a KIF Duofix escapement-wheel bearing was removed. The archive also describes the 709-2 minute wheel as jewel-bearing and says the seventeenth jewel is used for it.
This is a technical distinction, not proof that parts interchange between the two versions. Confirm compatibility against the exact movement and part before buying or fitting anything.

Can you date a watch with a 709-2?
Not precisely from the caliber alone. Watch Movements Archive gives 1960–1971 as the production period for the 709 family, while 17jewels.info describes the 709-2 as its later modification. These broad archive references do not establish when an individual watch was made. The directory listing confirms that a parts document is catalogued, but it does not establish current stock, identify particular part numbers here, or prove that a replacement part fits a given movement.

Tissot’s Singapore FAQ states: “Only service centres that meet strict criteria relating to equipment and technical skills are supplied with original Tissot spare parts.” Its general guidance recommends servicing watches every four to five years and says parts availability is guaranteed for at least 10 years, and up to 20 years for gold watches, from the date production ceases; discontinued parts may be replaced at Tissot’s discretion. This current general policy is not a promise of parts availability for a caliber family discontinued decades ago.

Tissot’s mechanical-watch manual, document 157_EN / 11.16, instead gives a general check interval of every three to four years and directs owners to an approved Tissot retailer or service centre. Neither interval is a 709-2-specific service rule. For work on a vintage movement, ask a qualified watchmaker to assess condition and caliber compatibility before authorizing repairs or sourcing parts.

What to check before buying a 709-2 part or watch
- Confirm the caliber marking and, where possible, the relevant movement details with a watchmaker.
- Ask for documented compatibility with the exact caliber modification; a 709-1 listing alone does not establish a fit for the 709-2.
