To make a fair choice, compare the FXD with a specific Black Bay reference—and weigh its fit, bezel, functions, strap setup and local price against what you actually want from a tool watch.
Start by choosing the exact models
The original time-only Pelagos FXD discussed here is reference M25717N-0001. TUDOR says it was developed in collaboration with a specialist unit of the French Navy for underwater navigation. The Black Bay name covers multiple watches, including models in different sizes and materials, so a family-level comparison cannot establish that one is smaller, cheaper or better suited to you. TUDOR’s overview describes 200 m water resistance for the line, but the chosen reference’s own specifications should decide any model-specific comparison.

There are also several Pelagos FXD variants. TUDOR’s collection page lists time-only versions, an FXD GMT and an FXD Chrono. Their specifications and functions are not interchangeable; the figures below apply to the stated reference or variant only. What the original Pelagos FXD offers
TUDOR’s current product page lists reference M25717N-0001 with a 42 mm titanium case, fixed strap bars, 22 mm lug width and 200 m water resistance. It has a unidirectional titanium bezel with a ceramic disc and 60-minute graduation, a sapphire crystal, and a COSC-certified MT5602 automatic movement with approximately 70 hours of power reserve. The listed thickness is 12.8 mm. The package includes a forest-green fabric strap and a complimentary black rubber strap. TUDOR’s reference page lists the full specification.

A separate TUDOR specification sheet for reference 25717N gives 12.75 mm thickness and 52 mm lug-to-lug. Since the current product page rounds thickness differently, keep the source and figure together rather than treating the two thickness values as competing measurements. The longer lug-to-lug figure is especially useful to check when assessing fit, but dimensions alone cannot predict how a watch will sit on every wrist. TUDOR’s reference 25717N specification sheet.
Navigation bezel or conventional dive timing?
The FXD’s fixed bars and bezel reflect its navigation-oriented brief. TUDOR’s background page explains that the original FXD was developed to specifications created with a French Navy specialist unit. It also says the original navigation bezel is bidirectional and retrograde, and does not correspond to the ISO 6425:2018 standard for divers’ watches. That qualification matters: do not assume the original FXD’s bezel is a conventional, ISO-compliant dive bezel just because the current reference page describes a unidirectional 60-minute bezel. Confirm the exact reference and the wording on its product page when comparing bezel operation. TUDOR’s FXD background page explains the design context.

For a Black Bay, check the precise reference’s bezel direction, scale and intended function. A model in the family may suit conventional elapsed-time tracking better, but that conclusion depends on its actual specifications—not the Black Bay name alone.

- Case and wrist fit: The cited FXD is 42 mm across and 12.8 mm thick on its current reference page; TUDOR’s separate specification sheet lists 52 mm lug-to-lug. Compare those figures with the exact Black Bay reference and, if possible, try both watches on. Case shape and wrist shape affect comfort as much as diameter.
- Strap attachment: The FXD’s fixed bars are central to its design and mean it is not configured like a watch with removable spring bars. Its 22 mm lug width and included fabric and rubber straps are stated for this reference. Check how the Black Bay reference attaches its strap and what comes in its box before assuming straps are interchangeable.
- Water resistance: The cited FXD is rated to 200 m. TUDOR gives 200 m as a Black Bay line-level figure in its overview, but verify the individual reference before relying on it.
- Movement and functions: The cited time-only FXD uses the MT5602 with approximately 70 hours of reserve. Compare that with the actual Black Bay movement and complications; if you need a second time zone or chronograph, compare the FXD GMT or Chrono rather than attributing those functions to the time-only model.
FXD variants and US suggested retail prices
On the TUDOR US collection page accessed in 2026, the displayed suggested retail prices are $5,025 for each listed time-only variation, $5,475 for the FXD GMT and $6,375 for the FXD Chrono. These are US-page suggested retail prices, not guaranteed transaction prices or prices for every market; check the current local listing and exact configuration. The FXD GMT is a different proposition from the time-only watch: TUDOR specifies a 42 mm titanium case, fixed bars, 200 m water resistance, a bidirectional 24-hour bezel and an integrated GMT function for tracking multiple time zones. Choose the time-only Pelagos FXD if
- You specifically want the fixed-bar construction and the watch’s navigation-oriented design.
- The 42 mm titanium case and 22 mm strap setup work for your wrist and preferences.
- You value the supplied fabric and rubber straps and do not need a different movement function from the time-only model.
Choose a Black Bay reference if
- A particular model’s size, material, bezel or movement suits you better than the FXD’s specific setup.
- You prefer the attachment system or strap configuration of that reference.
- Its current local price and configuration make more sense for your budget.
Consider another FXD variant if
You want the FXD design but need a function beyond time-only display. Compare the GMT’s multiple-time-zone function or the Chrono as its own model, using the exact current reference specifications rather than the time-only figures.

Before buying, put the exact reference numbers side by side. Confirm case dimensions, material, bezel operation, water resistance, movement functions, strap attachment and the price in your country. Without a chosen Black Bay reference and your priorities, there is no defensible universal winner.
