The 37mm Black Bay 54 Blue is a 200m dive watch with a unidirectional timing bezel; the 36mm Ranger ‘Dune’ is a 100m expedition-style field watch built around a smooth bezel and maximum dial legibility.
What TUDOR is highlighting
The Black Bay 54 Blue brings a sapphire-blue sunray dial and matching blue bezel to the Black Bay 54’s historically proportioned case. TUDOR describes the model as “the most true-to-form example of TUDOR’s first dive watch, the reference 7922.” Its 37mm steel case, 200m depth rating and elapsed-time bezel give it the functional identity of a modern dive watch, even though its dimensions echo an early model.

The Ranger 36 ‘Dune’ takes the opposite approach. Its warm, light “Dune white” dial is intended as “a subtle homage to TUDOR’s involvement in the world’s toughest race,” a reference to Dakar. The 36mm satin-finished steel case, smooth bezel and highly legible expedition layout make it a field-watch instrument rather than a bezel-timing diver. Black-dial Ranger variants are also listed in the family.

A genuine dive-watch tool
The Black Bay 54 Blue is rated to 200m and uses a unidirectional bezel. That bezel is designed for dive timing: it can be set to the planned elapsed time, while accidental movement can only shorten the indicated remaining time. This is the decisive functional difference between the two watches.

Vintage proportions with a modern movement
Inside is TUDOR’s Manufacture Calibre MT5400. The blue dial and bezel add color without changing the model’s compact, vintage-inspired proportions. The 37mm diameter sits between traditionally small dive-watch sizing and the larger cases common in contemporary sports watches.
Bracelet or rubber strap
TUDOR offers a three-link steel bracelet with T-fit adjustment or a black rubber strap. The cited US suggested retail price is $4,475 for the rubber-strap model and $4,725 for the bracelet version. These are configuration-specific US prices shown by TUDOR and may change.

Ranger 36 ‘Dune’: specifications and purpose
An expedition-style field watch
The Ranger 36 uses a 36mm satin-finished steel case, 19mm lugs and an 11.0mm thickness. Its domed sapphire crystal protects the Dune white dial, while the smooth satin-brushed bezel keeps the case visually simple. The dial’s large, high-contrast layout is designed for quick reading rather than dive-time calculations.
100m resistance for everyday exposure
Water resistance is 100m. That is suitable for routine water contact and general daily wear, but it does not provide the 200m rating of the Black Bay 54. The Ranger therefore occupies the practical middle ground of a robust everyday field watch, not the specific underwater role of a dive watch.

Choose the Black Bay 54 Blue if you need dive-watch functions
Select the Black Bay 54 Blue when a timing bezel and a 200m rating matter. It is the more capable choice for snorkeling, diving-oriented equipment, or anyone who specifically wants the visual language and operation of a dive watch. The matching blue dial and bezel make it the bolder of the two designs.

Choose the Ranger 36 ‘Dune’ if legibility and restraint come first
The Ranger 36 ‘Dune’ suits readers who want a small, understated watch for travel, work and outdoor use. Its smooth bezel cannot perform the Black Bay’s dive-timing job, but it leaves more visual emphasis on the highly legible dial. The 36mm case and 11.0mm thickness also appeal to anyone seeking compact proportions.
Consider the strap before ordering
The Black Bay’s bracelet adds the higher cited price and offers T-fit adjustment; the rubber strap reduces the entry price and gives the watch a more overtly aquatic character. Ranger buyers should compare the family’s bracelet and strap configurations according to climate, clothing and whether a lighter, more casual setup is preferred.

Bottom line for the comparison
These watches share a movement and compact steel cases, but their design briefs are distinct. The Black Bay 54 Blue is the historically styled, colorful 200m diver with a real timing bezel. The Ranger 36 ‘Dune’ is the quieter 100m field watch, with a smooth bezel, Dune white dial and smaller 36mm case. Decide first whether you need dive-watch functionality; case color, strap and price are secondary choices after that.
