The Vincent Bérard Luvorene 1 is a manually wound Swiss watch introduced at BaselWorld in 2007. Its in-house-at-the-atelier VB441 movement is arranged around five stepped, spindle-shaped bridges, with the balance exposed through an aperture at 3 o’clock. For collectors, its appeal is that unusual architecture and a long list of complications; its old prices are historical reference points, not a guide to what one costs today.
What the Luvorene 1 is
Luvorene 1 was the first wristwatch in Bérard’s “Spindle of the Infinite” collection, launched at BaselWorld in spring 2007. Contemporary reporting described the VB441 as designed and made by Bérard’s atelier. The watch brought the independent brand’s movement-first approach into a large, sculptural wristwatch.
Bérard had worked as a restorer before launching his eponymous brand in 2003. In a Europa Star profile, he described restoration as a way to study the history and architecture of mechanical timekeeping. The Luvorene 1 reflects that interest while presenting the mechanism in a distinctly contemporary composition.
What makes the VB441 unusual
Five stepped spindle-shaped bridges
The movement’s defining feature is a sequence of five spindle-form bridges, set at successive heights to create a spiral-like, three-dimensional effect. Contemporary descriptions also note guilloché-worked and hand-bevelled bridges, a screw balance and a Breguet overcoil balance spring. The reported frequency is 21,600 vibrations per hour.

An exposed balance at 3 o’clock
Aperture at 3 o’clock reveals the balance, described in contemporary coverage as “mysterious.” The crown sits at 9 o’clock, leaving room for the balance beneath a bulge in the case. This is not simply a conventional dial with an added opening: the case, crown position and visible movement element are composed around one another.
Functions and power reserve
The watch displays hours, minutes, seconds, moon phases and weekday. The caseback has two sapphire openings; through them, the small seconds and a 10-day power-reserve indicator can be seen. The reserve is a prominent practical feature alongside the movement’s decorative architecture.

Case, dial and historical variations
Monochrome reported a 42 mm case diameter and 13 mm thickness in 2009; Christie’s also records a 42 mm example. Europa Star’s 2008 gallery showed a rose-gold version with a black dial, gold indexes and hands, sapphire crystal, hand-stitched crocodile strap and gold buckle. Christie’s documented a separate pink-gold example with a silver dial.
Monochrome described eight variations available at the time, differing by case, dial and crocodile-strap colors. That is a historical range description, not a claim about the number of examples produced or current availability.

Launch context and historical prices
Vincent Bérard launched the collection with Timex’s support. The Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry reported in 2009 that the company had joined Timex Group in 2006. These are historical corporate details; they do not establish who owns or operates the brand today.

The figures answer the natural “what did it cost?” question, but they cannot establish what a Luvorene 1 should cost now. The available historical records do not establish a current retail price, production status or present market value. A marketplace search result has displayed a used white-gold example, but a search appearance alone does not confirm that the watch remains available or provide a dependable pricing benchmark.

What collectors should check before buying
Because the model is unusual and its current market and service arrangements are not established here, assess the individual watch rather than relying on old price references or a listing headline.
- Configuration: Confirm case metal, dial, hands and strap against the specific watch’s documentation and photographs.
- Movement and condition: Request clear movement images and a condition report, with particular attention to the VB441’s bridges, visible balance and complications.
- Identity and provenance: Ask for serial and reference details, provenance, and any available certificate or authenticity documentation.
- Service history: Request dated service records and ask a qualified specialist whether they can assess and service this movement. Do not assume a current brand service route.
- Accessories: Check whether the certificate, buckle, box, literature and packaging are present. Christie’s records these with one particular lot; that does not mean every example originally came with, or still has, the same package.
- Strap and wear: Inspect the crocodile strap and buckle separately from the watch, and establish whether they are original to the example.
Why it matters to collectors
The Luvorene 1 stands out because the movement is both the technical subject and the visual centerpiece. Its layered bridges and exposed balance give the watch a distinctive identity, while the moon phase, weekday and 10-day reserve make it more than a display of movement finishing. It also captures a particular moment in independent watchmaking: an ambitious, atelier-led design introduced with the backing of a larger group. Its historical importance is clearer than its present-day availability or value, so any purchase decision should rest on the specific watch’s condition, documentation and specialist assessment.
