Calasys is Vincent Calabrese’s proposed alternative to the balance-wheel hairspring in a mechanical watch. Instead of a spiral spring, it uses a pinion on the balance staff to move an arched rack, with two leaf springs returning the rack toward center. Calabrese’s published description identifies it as a prototype that had not yet passed the “walking test” he describes as a key step toward industrial production.
How Calasys is intended to work
In a conventional mechanical watch, the balance wheel and its spiral hairspring oscillate together to regulate the movement. Calasys separates that familiar arrangement: a pinion fixed to the balance-wheel staff meshes with a serrated, arched rack mounted on a pivot. As the balance turns, the rack moves back and forth; two leaf springs provide the restoring force that brings it toward its center.
Calabrese likens this centering action to gravity acting on a pendulum. The design’s purpose is to create an oscillating regulator without the balance’s conventional spiral hairspring. His description of the mechanism is available on the Calasys page.
What the patent says—and does not establish
The European patent record describes a timepiece escapement and return component. It presents replacing the spiral spring that returns the balance wheel with a component intended to be simpler to manufacture and adaptable to existing portable-watch escapement systems as design objectives—not as demonstrated results. The patent publication is titled “Timepiece movement escapement, return component for timepiece escapements, timepiece movement and timepiece comprising such a movement.” Its priority date is 2020-09-03. A patent publication documents an invention and its stated aims; it does not show that a watch using the design has met accuracy, durability, or production requirements. Development timeline and recognition

What remains unverified
Calabrese’s published Calasys description says the mechanism was “still only a prototype” and had not yet been validated by the walking test, which he calls a key step toward industrial production. The reviewed sources do not establish measured timekeeping accuracy, positional performance, shock resistance, durability, service interval, manufacturing yield, or commercial availability. No Calasys-specific performance figures are provided in the patent record or cited descriptions.

That distinction matters when assessing the concept. The rack-and-pinion and leaf-spring arrangement is the proposed architecture; simpler manufacture and compatibility with existing escapements are stated aims. Neither an award nor a patent publication supplies comparative test data against a conventional hairspring.

The cited sources do not establish a retail Calasys watch, a movement for sale, or a compatible replacement component. On the evidence available, Calasys is best understood as a prototype-stage regulating concept rather than a consumer option or a proven replacement for hairsprings in production watches.
