Five luxury watches forfeited after a UK payroll-fraud investigation will be sold without reserves in Wilsons Auctions’ online Unreserved Government Auction. The Philippe Dufour Simplicity No. 199 is the lead lot and is scheduled to close first.
When the auction runs
The online sale opens at 11:00 GMT on October 29, 2026 and runs for 24 hours until 11:00 GMT on October 30. Lots close in sequence rather than all at one time, with the Philippe Dufour Simplicity scheduled to finish first. Bidders should check Wilsons Auctions’ live catalogue for the current lot order, registration requirements and any catalogue updates before the sale.

All five watches are offered without reserve. That means there is no minimum price set by the seller: each lot is contractually intended to sell to the winning bidder at the final accepted hammer price, whatever that price is. Published coverage does not provide catalogue estimates, final prices or post-sale results.

HMRC’s investigation concerned suspected outsourced-labour payroll fraud. Investigators linked more than £7 million spent on luxury watches to the scheme over a three-year period, according to 2026 reports by JCK and Rapaport. Five watches, together valued at about £1 million, were seized from an individual attempting to leave the UK. They were later forfeited and are now being sold on behalf of UK government bodies and law-enforcement agencies.

What makes the Philippe Dufour the headline lot
The Simplicity No. 199 combines a relatively compact 37 mm case with an 18k rose-gold build, a silver-toned guilloché dial and a leather strap. Its significance is also tied to scarcity: Haute Time reported that approximately 200 Simplicity watches were produced. The supplied box is specifically reported; no broader statement about papers, service history or condition has been published in the coverage available before the sale.
Because it closes first and has no reserve, its result may set the tone for attention around the rest of the auction, but no responsible price prediction can be made from the published information.

How the other complications compare
Patek Philippe Ref. 5204R-011
This is the technically densest watch in the group as reported: a perpetual calendar combined with a split-seconds chronograph. The calendar tracks date information through changing month lengths and leap years, while the split-seconds mechanism allows an intermediate time to be recorded without stopping the main chronograph.
Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Ref. 26530ST
The 26530ST is identified in the coverage as a flying-tourbillon Royal Oak. A flying tourbillon removes the traditional upper bridge from the tourbillon cage, creating the open visual effect associated with the complication. The catalogue should be consulted for the exact configuration and condition.

- Black Guilloche Dial

Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Chronograph Ref. 26331ST
This Royal Oak is the conventional chronograph entry in the group, intended for elapsed-time measurement rather than the perpetual-calendar or tourbillon functions attributed to the other complicated models.

What bidders should verify before bidding
- Confirm the final lot descriptions, photographs, condition notes and any stated box-and-paper inventory in Wilsons’ live catalogue.
- Check the displayed closing order, remembering that the Simplicity is currently listed to close first and that lot times are sequential.
- Read the auction’s buyer’s-premium, tax, payment, collection and delivery terms; those charges can materially change the amount payable beyond the hammer price.
- Use the published references to distinguish the watches, especially the two Royal Oak entries, and do not assume that an accessory or service record is included unless the catalogue says so.
- Set a maximum bid in advance. “Unreserved” removes a seller’s minimum, but it does not guarantee a bargain or disclose what the final market price will be.
What is not yet known
The auction had not taken place at the latest authoritative reporting date. Consequently, there are no verified winning bidders, hammer prices or post-sale outcomes to report. Complete catalogue estimates are also unavailable in the published coverage. Any article or listing claiming those results before the October 29–30 sale would be premature.
Wilsons Auctions luxury-goods specialist James Guiler described the group as “one of the most exciting groups of watches we have had the privilege of offering at Wilsons Auctions.” He added that, “because the sale is unreserved, every one of them will sell on the day.”
