Watchmaker Shares the Truth About Watch Service and Repair

There is no universal watch-service interval. Learn what a proper overhaul includes, when mechanical and quartz watches need attention, why water resistance fades, and which repairs belong with a professional.

The truth about watch service is that there is no universal “every five years” rule. A mechanical watch, a quartz watch, a vintage piece, and a heavily used water-resistant sports watch do not share the same maintenance needs. Service timing depends on the movement, the manufacturer’s guidance, how the watch is worn, whether it has been exposed to water or shocks, and whether it is still keeping time properly.

Just as important, “service” can mean several different things. A battery change, a water-resistance test, routine maintenance, a complete movement overhaul, restoration, and damage repair are not interchangeable jobs. Understanding that distinction helps you avoid both unnecessary work and the more expensive mistake of waiting until a small problem becomes movement damage.

What “watch service” actually means

Watch owners often use service to describe any work performed on a watch. A professional, however, may be referring to one of several very different levels of care.

Type of work What it usually involves When it is appropriate
Owner care Cleaning the exterior, changing a strap, and checking for obvious damage Regularly, provided the work does not require opening the case
Minor maintenance Battery or rechargeable-cell replacement, basic regulation, gasket attention, or a water-resistance test For a specific maintenance need on an otherwise healthy watch
Complete service or overhaul Diagnosis, movement disassembly, cleaning, inspection, lubrication, reassembly, adjustment, and testing When the movement is due for scheduled maintenance, running poorly, or showing wear
Repair Replacement or correction of a failed, damaged, or worn component After a stoppage, impact, moisture exposure, broken crown, damaged crystal, or other fault
Restoration Conservation or repair of an older watch, often involving case, dial, hands, bracelet, and historically appropriate parts For vintage, inherited, collectible, or significantly damaged watches

A battery change is not a mechanical overhaul. Polishing a case is not movement service. A pressure test is not proof that the movement is healthy. Ask the provider to state exactly which category of work is included before approving an estimate.

How often should a watch be serviced?

Use the manufacturer’s recommendation as a starting point, not as an automatic appointment date. Official brand guidance varies substantially:

  • Victorinox describes maintenance service approximately every 18 to 24 months and a complete overhaul approximately every six years.
  • Girard-Perregaux recommends a mechanical overhaul about every five years, or every three years for non-water-resistant models. Its guidance for quartz watches includes battery service every two to three years.
  • Rolex says a service is generally recommended approximately every 10 years, depending on the model and how it is used.
  • CHANEL recommends a thorough examination approximately every five years.

These recommendations are not necessarily contradictory. They reflect differences in movement design, case construction, water resistance, lubrication systems, brand service policy, and assumptions about use. A dress watch worn occasionally in a dry environment does not experience the same conditions as a diver worn daily, a watch exposed to perspiration and salt water, or a vintage movement with decades-old lubricants.

Practical rule: have the watch inspected when the manufacturer recommends it, when its performance changes, or after a potentially harmful event. Do not wait for a watch to stop if it is already losing or gaining noticeably, running for a shorter time, showing condensation, or making an unfamiliar noise.

Service intervals are recommendations, not guarantees

A watch may run acceptably beyond a suggested interval while its oils are aging and its pivots or bearings are wearing. Conversely, a watch may require attention much sooner after a hard shock, water exposure, magnetization, or an impact to the crown. Timekeeping alone is not a complete health check.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a mechanical watch, a reasonable inspection trigger includes a persistent change in daily rate, reduced power reserve, stopping before its stated reserve is exhausted, difficulty setting the hands, or unusual noise. For quartz, the trigger may be a weak or irregular battery, erratic seconds-hand behavior, repeated stopping, moisture, or a battery that has been left in place too long.

What happens during a legitimate complete service?

A proper overhaul is more than putting the watch in a cleaning machine and adding oil. The sequence varies by workshop and caliber, but a credible service normally includes the following stages.

  1. Diagnosis and estimate. The watchmaker records the condition of the case, crystal, crown, pushers, bracelet, clasp, dial, hands, and movement. The watch may be timed in several positions and checked for winding, setting, power reserve, and obvious damage. The customer should receive an estimate or approval request before unexpected major work begins.
  2. Case and movement separation. The movement is removed from the case using procedures appropriate to that caliber. Water-resistant or valuable watches should not be opened casually because case-back, crown, gasket, and dust damage can create new problems.
  3. Complete movement disassembly. Components are taken apart systematically rather than merely flushed as an assembled unit. This allows the watchmaker to inspect pivots, jewels, wheels, springs, screws, the escapement, automatic winding system, calendar works, and other caliber-specific components.
  4. Cleaning. Suitable components are cleaned, commonly using specialized cleaning equipment and solutions. Old lubricant, dust, and debris are removed. Cleaning cannot restore a part that is physically worn, bent, cracked, or out of specification.
  5. Inspection and parts replacement. Parts that no longer meet specification may need replacement. Depending on the watch, that can include worn wheels, damaged jewels, mainsprings, reversing wheels, screws, setting components, or other movement parts. The provider should explain whether replacement parts are genuine, compatible, or fabricated.
  6. Reassembly and lubrication. The movement is reassembled with the correct lubricants in the correct quantities and locations. More oil is not automatically better: excess lubricant can migrate, attract debris, or interfere with the escapement.
  7. Adjustment. The watchmaker regulates the movement and checks its behavior in relevant positions. Mechanical precision varies with position, winding state, temperature, and use; a single quick timing reading is not the same as a complete performance assessment.
  8. Case, bracelet, and gasket work. The case and bracelet may be cleaned or refinished if authorized. Gaskets are inspected and commonly replaced when the case is opened or when water resistance must be restored. A polish should be discussed separately, especially on vintage or collectible watches where sharp case geometry and original surfaces matter.
  9. Testing. Depending on the watch, testing may include electronic timing analysis, power-reserve verification, winding and calendar checks, water-resistance testing, and a multi-day function check. Rolex describes complete dismantling, ultrasonic cleaning, replacement of parts outside specification, lubrication, electronic timing tests, refinishing, and tests for waterproofness, power reserve, and precision. Seiko lists movement service, necessary movement-part replacement, gasket replacement, water-resistance testing, lubrication, timing adjustment, and accuracy testing. CHANEL describes disassembly, cleaning, reassembly, adjustment, bracelet and clasp inspection, gasket replacement, water-resistance verification, and a multi-day function check.

The final test matters because a watch can appear healthy immediately after reassembly and still reveal a problem during extended running. Ask what was tested, for how long, and whether the results will be documented.

The stopped-watch mistake: repair the cause, not only the symptom

A stopped watch does not identify its own fault. In a quartz watch, the cause may be a depleted battery, a leaking battery, a damaged electronic module, a poor contact, or moisture. In a mechanical watch, possibilities include dried lubricant, magnetism, a broken mainspring, worn pivots, damaged wheels, a problem in the keyless works, or a fault in the escapement.

That is why replacing only the visibly associated part can be a shortcut. A battery change may be appropriate, but the case still needs inspection for leakage and the gasket and water resistance may need attention. Similarly, regulating a mechanical watch without examining worn components may temporarily change the rate without addressing the cause.

Good service begins with diagnosis. The quality of the diagnosis is at least as important as the number of components cleaned or replaced.

Mechanical versus quartz watch maintenance

Mechanical watches

Mechanical movements use springs, gears, jewels, an escapement, and—on automatic watches—a winding system driven by the wearer’s motion. Their performance can be affected by gravity and position, shocks, magnetism, temperature variation, dried or degraded lubricants, and wear at contact points.

That does not mean every mechanical watch must be overhauled every three or five years. It means the movement benefits from appropriate inspection and that symptoms should not be ignored. A watch that is suddenly gaining several minutes a day, losing power reserve, stopping overnight, or sounding rough during winding deserves evaluation even if its nominal service date has not arrived.

Quartz watches

Quartz watches generally need less mechanical maintenance, but they are not maintenance-free. Service can involve battery or rechargeable-cell replacement, electronic diagnosis, gasket replacement, cleaning, and water-resistance testing. A battery left in the watch after it is depleted can leak and damage the movement, dial, or electronic parts.

Do not assume that a quartz watch opened for a battery change automatically retains its previous water resistance. The case, gasket, crown, and case back may need inspection, and a water-resistance test is appropriate when the watch is designed for water exposure or when the case has been opened.

Water resistance is a condition, not a permanent promise

A water-resistance rating describes tested performance under particular conditions. It is not a permanent guarantee that an aging watch can be submerged indefinitely. The crown, crystal, case back, seals, pushers, and case itself all contribute to protection.

Gaskets lose elasticity and can become brittle over time. Citizen recommends regular servicing with gasket replacement at least every two to three years and warns that water intrusion can damage movement components, electronic parts, and the dial. Girard-Perregaux recommends an annual water-resistance test and testing after the case has been opened or the watch has suffered a major shock.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not home-test an expensive, vintage, or sentimental watch with improvised pressure equipment or by placing it in water. A professional pressure or vacuum test is safer, but even a test is only meaningful if the watch is in suitable condition and the crown, crystal, case, and gaskets are correctly fitted.

If water or condensation enters the watch

  1. Remove the watch from the water and stop wearing it.
  2. Do not operate the crown, pushers, or buttons unnecessarily.
  3. Do not use a hair dryer, radiator, oven, or direct heat.
  4. Contact a qualified service provider promptly and explain how the exposure happened.

Visible condensation is not a cosmetic issue. Moisture can corrode metal parts, stain or damage the dial, affect electronic components, and spread beyond the area where it is first visible.

What owners can safely do

Low-risk owner care is mostly external and reversible:

  • Wipe the case and bracelet with a soft, suitable cloth.
  • Keep leather straps away from prolonged water and sweat where possible.
  • Change a strap on an inexpensive or non-water-critical watch if you understand how the spring bars release and reseat.
  • Store the watch away from strong magnets, unnecessary heat, and severe impacts.
  • Record when a battery was installed or when the watch was last serviced.
  • Observe timekeeping, power reserve, winding feel, crown operation, and any signs of moisture.

For basic strap or bracelet work, a watch repair tool kit can be useful, but treat it as an external-care accessory rather than a miniature service department. A dedicated watch spring-bar tool is the narrowest and safest choice for changing straps when the watch is inexpensive and the user is comfortable protecting the lugs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use extra caution with polished surfaces, leather, fragile vintage spring bars, integrated bracelets, and watches with unusual lug designs. If a spring bar will not release easily, stop rather than levering against the case or lug.

What should be left to a watchmaker?

Professionals should handle movement disassembly, lubrication, regulation, gasket replacement intended to restore water resistance, pressure testing, moisture damage, broken crowns or pushers, crystal fitting, vintage restoration, and work on luxury or sentimental watches.

Watchmaking tools such as movement holders, oilers, oil cups, Rodico-style cleaning compound, precision screwdrivers, pin vises, and antimagnetic tweezers are real specialist equipment—not evidence that movement service is a suitable first home project. Training materials from the American Watchmakers-Clockmakers Institute treat systematic disassembly, diagnosis, oiling, timing analysis, crystal and gasket fitting, and water testing as learned competencies.

If you are considering formal study, a watch repair manual or comparable watchmaking reference can support learning, but reading a book does not replace supervised practice. Do not begin by opening a water-resistant, vintage, high-value, or irreplaceable watch.

How to choose a watch service provider

Authorization is useful, but it is not the only measure of quality. The relevant questions are whether the provider has the capability, parts access, equipment, documentation, warranty, and caliber-specific experience your watch requires.

Questions to ask before approving work

  • Can you identify the movement caliber and explain the suspected fault?
  • Is this a partial maintenance job, a repair, or a complete overhaul?
  • What does the quoted price include?
  • Will the movement be fully disassembled, cleaned, inspected, lubricated, and regulated?
  • Which parts might require replacement, and will you seek approval first?
  • Are the replacement parts genuine, compatible, or fabricated?
  • Will gaskets be replaced if the case is opened?
  • Will water resistance be tested, and what result is guaranteed after service?
  • Will timing, power reserve, calendar operation, and other functions be checked?
  • Will the case or bracelet be polished? If so, can that be declined?
  • What documentation and service warranty will I receive?
  • Who will perform the work, and do they regularly service this movement family?

For a branded watch under warranty, a proprietary caliber, a watch requiring documented factory work, or a watch whose water resistance is important, an authorized service center may be the most straightforward option. Rolex maintains an official jeweler and service-center network, while Patek Philippe describes authorized retailers and certified service centers and says customers receive repair cost estimates. For other watches, a capable independent watchmaker may be an excellent choice. Compare the actual service scope rather than assuming that “authorized” or “independent” alone settles the question.

The AWCI member directory can also be an escalation path when you need help locating a watchmaker or repair source. It is sensible to verify current availability, location, caliber experience, estimate terms, and warranty directly with the provider.

A practical decision tree

The watch is running normally, stays dry, and has no damage

Continue sensible owner care and check the brand’s recommendation. Arrange an inspection or service when the stated interval arrives, especially if the watch is worn daily or exposed to water, perspiration, dust, shocks, or temperature changes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The watch is running, but timekeeping or power reserve has changed

Stop treating the change as normal aging. Record how much it gains or loses, whether the behavior changes by position, and how long it runs when fully wound. Have it diagnosed; regulation alone may not solve wear or lubrication problems.

The watch has stopped

Do not repeatedly shake, wind, or reset it if doing so feels abnormal. For quartz, arrange battery and leakage checks. For mechanical, request diagnosis rather than assuming it needs only a quick cleaning.

The case has been opened or the watch suffered a major shock

Have the seals and water resistance evaluated before exposing it to water again. Girard-Perregaux specifically recommends testing after case opening or a major shock; this is particularly important for watches with screw-down crowns or pushers.

Truth versus shortcut

Shortcut Why it is unreliable Better approach
“Every watch needs service every five years.” Brand recommendations range from roughly two years for certain maintenance tasks to about 10 years for some Rolex models, and usage changes the answer. Combine manufacturer guidance with symptoms, environment, age, and water exposure.
“It only needs a cleaning.” A visible symptom may come from worn or damaged parts, magnetism, moisture, or a fault elsewhere in the movement. Insist on diagnosis before choosing the repair.
“The water-resistance rating makes it safe forever.” Gaskets age, cases can be damaged, and crowns and crystals can lose their seal. Test water resistance professionally and after relevant shocks or case opening.
“Quartz watches need no service.” Batteries can leak, electronics can fail, and opened cases may need gasket and water-resistance attention. Replace batteries promptly and inspect the case when it is opened.
“A cheap tool kit makes an overhaul easy.” Movement work requires specialized tools, techniques, cleanliness, lubrication knowledge, and testing. Limit home work to appropriate external tasks unless properly trained.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I wait until my mechanical watch stops before servicing it?

You can, but it is usually a poor strategy. A watch may continue running while lubricants degrade and pivots or other components wear. A change in accuracy, power reserve, winding feel, or noise is a better reason to arrange diagnosis before a complete stoppage occurs.

Does opening a watch cancel its water resistance?

Opening the case does not automatically mean the watch cannot be made water resistant again, but the seals, case surfaces, crown, crystal, and case back must be correctly inspected and fitted. A professional water-resistance test should be performed before the watch returns to water exposure.

Is an authorized service center always better than an independent watchmaker?

Not automatically. An authorized center may offer advantages for warranties, proprietary parts, factory documentation, and certain brand-specific procedures. A skilled independent may be an excellent choice when they have the right equipment, parts access, caliber experience, documentation, and warranty. Compare capabilities and service scope.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I polish my watch during service?

Only if you want it and the provider can preserve the case’s intended geometry. Polishing can remove material and soften original edges. It deserves a separate decision, particularly for vintage, collectible, or historically important watches.

What is the safest first step if a watch gets wet inside?

Stop wearing it, avoid operating the crown or pushers, avoid direct heat, and contact a qualified watchmaker promptly. Moisture can corrode movement, electronic, and dial components even when the visible condensation later disappears.

The Bottom Line

Service a watch according to its construction, condition, use, and manufacturer—not according to one universal calendar rule. Keep owner care external, treat water resistance as something that must be maintained and tested, and choose diagnosis before a supposedly simple repair. A complete service should involve disassembly, cleaning, inspection, appropriate parts replacement, lubrication, adjustment, and meaningful testing. When the watch is valuable, vintage, water-resistant, damaged, or emotionally important, professional evaluation is the economical choice even if the watch is still running.
