Training load estimates how much stress your workouts have placed on your body; recovery time estimates when you may be ready for another hard session. Training-status labels combine these and other trends. They are useful context, not diagnoses or commands: each watch brand calculates them differently, so interpret the number alongside your training history and how you feel.
What training load means
Training load is a watch’s estimate of exercise stress. It helps summarize how demanding recent workouts have been, but it is not a universal unit: brands use different inputs, formulas, scales, and time periods. A score from one watch should not be treated as directly interchangeable with a score from another.

Garmin says its training-load metrics are based on excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC), an estimate used to describe physiological impact and recovery demands. Garmin explains its Training Load metric. COROS describes Training Load as a measure of workout strain based on time and intensity; for activities recorded with heart-rate data, its score is shown on a personalized low, medium, or high scale. COROS explains its fitness metrics.

What recovery time and recovery scores mean
Recovery time is an estimate of how long remains before a watch considers you ready for another hard workout. Garmin’s Forerunner 70 manual describes it as time until you are fully recovered and ready for the next hard workout, with readiness framed against another workout of similar intensity. Garmin also cautions that its measurements are estimates that can help track and understand training. See the Forerunner 70 manual’s training-status guidance and Garmin’s recovery-time explanation.

Other systems may show a recovery score rather than a countdown. COROS’s Recovery is a real-time percentage based on Base Fitness, Training Load, and remaining energy since the last exercise. COROS says runners typically do not need to be fully recovered before starting the next training session. That percentage is a feature of COROS’s own system, not a universal recovery scale.
A recovery estimate does not mean you must avoid all activity until a timer reaches zero. It is intended to help with decisions about hard efforts; it does not account for every aspect of your circumstances, and it should not be used as a medical assessment.

What a training-status label adds
Training status is usually a view of trends or a combination of metrics, not a definitive judgment based on one run. The inputs and time windows depend on the watch.

| Garmin Forerunner 70 | Training status reflects changes in estimated VO₂ max, acute load, and HRV status. Recovery time estimates readiness for the next hard workout. | Acute load is a weighted sum of recent exercise-load scores that includes duration and intensity. The manual specifies two weeks of activity history using wrist heart rate or a compatible chest monitor for the described estimates. | Garmin says estimates may seem inaccurate at first while the watch learns performance; these details are specific to the model and manual. |
| COROS | Training Load quantifies workout stress; Training Status describes the effectiveness of recent training; Recovery is a real-time percentage. | Training Status compares rolling seven-day and 42-day averages. Recovery combines Base Fitness, Training Load, and remaining energy since exercise. | Its scores and labels are COROS-specific. Do not equate its recovery percentage with another brand’s value. |
| Apple Watch | Training load shows how workout intensity may affect the body over time. | Apple’s Activity app shows the previous seven days; the cited guide also points to overnight vitals for additional insights. | Apple’s guide describes the feature at a high level. It does not establish that Apple uses Garmin- or COROS-style components. |

Why a watch may show no status—or a status that seems wrong
It may not have enough history
Some status estimates require a record of activity before they can show a useful trend. Garmin’s Forerunner 70 manual specifies two weeks of activities for the estimates it describes and notes that they may seem inaccurate initially. This is a Forerunner 70 requirement, not a universal rule for every watch.
The activity may not meet a feature’s recording requirements
COROS says its running-specific metrics require at least one 25-minute run at 65% of maximum heart-rate reserve, or completion of its Running Fitness Test. These are COROS feature prerequisites, not general requirements for running watches.

The watch may be showing a trend, not judging your last workout
A status can depend on rolling averages or several measures together. COROS compares seven-day load with a 42-day base; Garmin’s Forerunner 70 combines estimated VO₂ max, acute load, and HRV status. A single session may therefore not shift the label in the way you expect. For Apple Watch, Apple describes a seven-day Activity-app view but does not specify the same component metrics.
How to use the numbers in training
- Check the metric’s definition for your exact watch. Confirm whether it is a load score, a recovery countdown, a recovery percentage, or a status label; similar names do not guarantee similar calculations.
- Look at the trend and the workout behind it. A changing load or status is easier to interpret alongside recent session duration and intensity than as a standalone verdict.
- Use recovery guidance for hard-session planning, not as an all-activity ban. COROS explicitly notes that full recovery is not typically necessary before every next session; Garmin frames its recovery time around readiness for another hard workout.
- Give new estimates time to develop. When a feature needs activity history, an unavailable or unstable early result may reflect limited data rather than a definitive assessment of your fitness.
- Pay attention to how you feel. These features are estimates from recorded data, not clinical tests. Do not use a watch score to adjudicate unusual symptoms or health concerns.
When comparing brands, compare the method—not just the number
To understand what a metric means, compare what the device says it uses, how much history it considers, what scale or labels it displays, and which activity or recording conditions are required. For example, COROS describes a 3:1 training-cycle approach—three consecutive weeks of increasing load followed by a lower-load fourth week—as a recommendation. That is a COROS planning suggestion, not a universal rule that every runner should follow.

Apple’s guide describes training load as a way to view how workout intensity may affect the body over time and shows the previous seven days in Activity. It does not establish the same inputs or interpretation as the Garmin and COROS examples. Check the documentation for your model and software, because a familiar label can represent a different calculation.
