Use the manual for the exact reference as your authority for routine care. A soft, clean cloth may be suitable for wiping the exterior if the manual permits it. Wiping the case does not check the movement, seals or water resistance, and it is not a substitute for a technical inspection or overhaul.
Can you get a tourbillon wet or clean it with water?
Do not assume a tourbillon is safe to wear in the shower, swimming or other water activities. Water resistance and permitted activities depend on the particular watch, its condition and the maker’s instructions. Wet cleaning is also model-specific. For the MP-15 Takashi Murakami Tourbillon Sapphire, Hublot’s instruction manual describes cleaning the specified water-resistant case and rubber with lukewarm soapy water and careful wiping with a soft cloth. That direction should not be applied to watches with different materials, straps, seals or water-resistance ratings. Check your own manual before using water or soap. How often should a tourbillon be serviced?
Follow the schedule for the exact model rather than a generic tourbillon interval. Hublot’s Tourbillon User Manual recommends a complete overhaul every three to five years, noting that temperature variations, humidity, perspiration and repeated shocks may affect water resistance over time. Other manufacturers give guidance for their own watches and uses. Chopard’s Superfast Tourbillon manual recommends regular movement service by an official Chopard distributor and advises checking water resistance annually before intensive use in an aquatic environment. Where should you arrange service?
Start with the watch’s manufacturer or an authorized retailer or service center for that brand. Jaeger-LeCoultre says its official centers employ watchmakers trained at the Manufacture and have the tools and parts needed to repair and maintain its watches and clocks; some work may be sent to the Swiss manufacture. Before sending or taking in the watch, contact the provider and ask for the correct service route in your region. Share the reference, describe what you have noticed, and provide any service history you have. Request an estimate and clarify the proposed work, whether water resistance will be assessed, the warranty terms, expected turnaround and shipping and insurance arrangements. What if the watch starts running fast?
A sudden change in rate is a reason to contact the maker or an authorized service provider, not to adjust or open the watch yourself. If magnetism is a possibility, Patek Philippe’s advice is to visit an official Service Center or Authorized Retailer for demagnetization. Describe when the change began and any recent shocks, magnetic exposure or other unusual conditions when you request help. The available guidance does not identify a single cause for a watch running fast, so diagnosis requires assessment of the specific watch.
