Wear OS 5 did reach both the original Google Pixel Watch and Pixel Watch 2, beginning on September 24, 2024. But Google paused the rollout two days later after some owners reported blank or frozen screens. The update was subsequently resumed, Wear OS 5.1 arrived in 2025, and the two watches now have different software futures.
Updated for the software-support situation reported in 2026.

The short answer
- The original Pixel Watch and Pixel Watch 2—including Wi-Fi/Bluetooth and LTE variants—were eligible for Wear OS 5.
- The rollout began on September 24, 2024, as part of the September security update.
- Google paused distribution on September 26 after reports of blank or frozen displays affecting some users.
- Wear OS 5.1, based on Android 15, later reached both generations in 2025.
- By 2026, the original Pixel Watch had effectively reached the end of its major-version upgrade path, while Pixel Watch 2 remained eligible for newer Wear OS releases.
So if you are reading an old headline saying Wear OS 5 is “rolling out,” treat that as a reference to the September 2024 event—not a current 2026 rollout.
Wear OS 5 rollout timeline
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| September 24, 2024 | Google began the phased Wear OS 5 rollout for the original Pixel Watch and Pixel Watch 2. |
| September 26, 2024 | Google paused distribution after some owners reported blank or frozen screens after installation. |
| October 11, 2024 | Google said it planned to resume the rollout after addressing the observed problems. |
| March 2025 | Wear OS 5.1 became available for the Pixel Watch generations covered by Google’s version documentation. |
| 2026 | Pixel Watch 2 moved on to newer Wear OS releases, while the original Pixel Watch reportedly remained on the Wear OS 5.1-era software branch. |
Google used a staged rollout, so availability varied by device, carrier, region, and LTE or Wi-Fi model. The initial reported builds were AW2A.240903.005.A2 for the original Pixel Watch and AW2A.240903.005.A1 for Pixel Watch 2. Build numbers can differ in later maintenance releases.

What Wear OS 5 added
Google associated the update with several user-facing changes:
- A grid-view app launcher instead of the older launcher presentation.
- Improved Camera controls for use with a paired Pixel phone.
- Pixel Recorder functionality.
- Performance improvements, security updates, and bug fixes.
Not every feature was contained entirely in the operating-system image. Some watch features depended on separate app updates delivered through Google Play. After installing the OTA, open the Play Store on the watch, go to the updates area, and install any pending Pixel Watch or Google apps.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsGoogle described the update as supporting watches running Wear OS 3.5 or Wear OS 4. That prerequisite does not mean every watch received the package simultaneously.
Why Google paused the update
Some owners found that their watch displayed a blank screen or became stuck after installing Wear OS 5. Google paused the rollout on September 26, 2024 while it worked on mitigation and later said distribution would resume.

This should not be described as universal “bricking.” The official notice referred to a problem affecting some users and did not publish a failure rate or establish that the affected watches suffered permanent hardware damage.
Google’s rollout-pause notice directed affected owners to blank-screen troubleshooting and factory-reset guidance.

How to check for an update
- Put the watch on its charger.
- Connect it to Wi-Fi and keep the paired phone nearby.
- On the watch, open Settings.
- Tap System, then System updates.
- Follow the on-screen instructions if an update is offered.
Menu labels can vary slightly by software version and language. The watch’s own system-update screen is the reliable place to check; the phone app should not be assumed to be able to force an OTA.
Before updating, install available updates for the Pixel Watch app and Google Play services on the phone, charge the watch, and allow time for downloading, installation, and several reboots. Do not repeatedly restart or tap the screen expecting to bypass a staged rollout.
If the update does not appear
A missing update can be normal. Possible explanations include:
Rank #3
- The Pixel Watch 2 comes with three new advanced sensors for heart rate tracking, skin temperature, and stress management[1,2]; 100% recycled light aluminum housing makes it comfortable to wear[3]
- The all-new heart rate sensor and Google AI combine for Fitbit’s most spot-on heart rate tracking yet[4], so you can get more precise health and fitness info[5]

- The staged rollout has not reached your specific watch.
- Your carrier or region has not released the package.
- The watch needs an earlier software update first.
- The battery is too low or Wi-Fi is unavailable.
- Google has temporarily paused distribution.
- The watch is already on a later release, such as Wear OS 5.1 or Wear OS 7.
Check the installed version under Settings > System > About, then use Google’s Pixel Watch support hub for current troubleshooting. The old Wear OS 5 package should not be treated as something to manually obtain in 2026.

- Leave the watch on its charger for a reasonable period and try a normal restart.
- If it remains blank or unresponsive, follow Google’s current blank-screen troubleshooting steps.
- Contact Google Support if it will not boot or pair.
- Use a factory reset only when directed or when other recovery options have failed.
A factory reset can erase watch data and requires setting the watch up again. Cloud-synced information may be restorable, but a reset is not harmless and should not be the first step if you want support to investigate the failure. Google’s technical OTA and factory-image pages are not casual force-update instructions; manual flashing can cause data loss or leave a device unusable if the model-specific procedure is wrong.
Wear OS 5 versus Wear OS 5.1
These are related but separate releases. Wear OS 5 was the initial Android 14-era upgrade announced in September 2024. Wear OS 5.1 arrived later and was based on Android 15. Google’s Wear OS 5.1 documentation records availability for the original Pixel Watch and Pixel Watch 2 variants in 2025.
That distinction matters when comparing support reports. A watch described as running “Wear OS 5” may have subsequently moved to 5.1 through a later OTA, and the original Pixel Watch’s later support ceiling should not be confused with the initial 2024 rollout.

Original Pixel Watch
The first-generation Pixel Watch reportedly received a 2026 maintenance update but remained based on Wear OS 5.1. It was not expected to receive Wear OS 6 or later major releases after passing Google’s stated three-year update-guarantee period. “At the end of major-version support” is more precise than saying the watch is completely unsupported, because maintenance or security updates can be separate from major OS upgrades.

Pixel Watch 2
Pixel Watch 2 has a longer upgrade path. It was included in 2026 coverage of the Wear OS 7 rollout, although availability can still vary by region, carrier, model, and rollout stage. Check the watch’s update screen rather than assuming every unit received the release on the same date.
Should you buy one now?
For an existing owner, install the latest official OTA offered for your particular watch. Do not seek out the old Wear OS 5 package simply because an archived article says it is rolling out.
For a used-watch buyer, Pixel Watch 2 is generally the safer choice if remaining major-version support is your priority. A first-generation Pixel Watch can still make sense at the right price if you are comfortable with its Wear OS 5.1-era ceiling and its battery, condition, warranty, and accessory situation. LTE models also require checking carrier compatibility and activation costs.
Someone who wants the longest software runway should compare the current Pixel Watch lineup through Google’s official store. Do not buy another first-generation unit solely for Wear OS 5, and do not assume that a Fitbit Premium subscription is required for basic timekeeping, notifications, or activity tracking.
