That does not, by itself, mean the watch is damaged. Restarting and correcting it safely depends on the exact watch and movement, so identify the reference and follow its manual rather than trying a universal reset.
What changes when the watch stops?
A stopped mechanical watch has no power to advance its hands or calendar mechanism. Once it is running again, the displayed time will be wrong; the day, date, month, leap-year indication or other calendar displays may also need correction. The precise indications depend on the watch.

A stop after the power reserve is depleted is not, on its own, evidence of a fault. Patek Philippe says a stopped self-winding watch can be restarted with a few gentle turns of the crown. If the watch will not restart according to its maker’s instructions, or a crown or corrector resists, stop rather than forcing it.
First identify the watch and its power source
Find the brand, reference and movement caliber, then locate the instructions for that exact watch. Do not assume that two perpetual calendars from the same maker use the same correction method.

- Mechanical self-winding: It runs from stored mechanical energy. A watch that has stopped may need winding or movement, as specified by its manual.
- Mechanical manually wound: Follow the maker’s winding directions; do not apply an automatic-watch procedure by assumption.
- Quartz perpetual calendar: Its power source and restart procedure differ from a mechanical watch. Follow the movement-specific instructions, including any charging or setting steps.
For example, Citizen’s Cal. A010 instructions say that its calendar normally needs no manual adjustment until February 28, 2100, unless it has been set incorrectly or the watch has stopped. That date and procedure apply to that movement, not to perpetual calendars generally: Citizen Cal. A010 instructions.
How to restart and correct a mechanical perpetual calendar
- Check the exact manual. Confirm the winding method, the permitted setting direction and whether the watch uses the crown, separate calendar correctors or both.
- Restart it as instructed. Patek Philippe’s general care guidance says a stopped self-winding watch can be manually wound with a few gentle turns of the crown until it starts again. Do not treat that as a universal instruction for every watch.
- Check the calendar-setting restriction. Some movements prohibit calendar corrections during certain hours. Jaeger-LeCoultre warns against calendar correction from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. for the Master Ultra Thin Perpetual; Vacheron Constantin specifies 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. for the watches covered by its instructions. These different windows show why the exact manual matters.
- Use only the model’s correction sequence. Depending on the watch and how long it has been stopped, the maker may direct you to advance the hands, use correctors, or perform a fuller adjustment. Do not force a control or improvise a sequence.
- Stop if anything feels wrong. If the watch does not restart as directed, a corrector or crown resists, or you cannot confidently follow the instructions, contact the maker or an authorized watchmaker.
Why there is no universal reset sequence
Procedures vary even among mechanical perpetual calendars. Vacheron Constantin says that for the watches covered by its instructions, a stoppage of only a few days may be corrected by moving the hands forward until the correct day and date appear; a longer stoppage calls for a full adjustment. That is a maker- and instruction-specific example, not a general rule for all perpetual calendars.

Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Master Ultra Thin Perpetual manual provides its own correction cautions and recovery options. Follow that manual for the relevant model rather than transferring Vacheron Constantin’s method to it. The same principle applies to other brands and calibers.

Setting direction can matter too. Patek Philippe’s instructions for Calibre 31-260 PS QL warn that turning the hands counterclockwise across midnight can desynchronize the calendar displays, while noting that this will not damage that calendar mechanism. This is a model-specific distinction; it should not be generalized to every watch or used as a reason to test directions on an unknown movement.

When to seek watchmaker help
- The watch does not restart using the manufacturer’s directions.
- The crown or calendar correctors feel stuck or require force.
- The display remains incorrect after you follow the model-specific procedure.
- You cannot identify the movement or find instructions for the exact reference.
Patek Philippe recommends service for quartz, manually wound mechanical and self-winding watches every eight to ten years through an Official Service Center or Authorized Retailer. A compatible automatic watch winder can keep some self-winding watches running while they are stored, which may preserve their calendar settings. It is optional, and compatibility depends on the specific watch; a winder is not a substitute for service. Patek Philippe describes a winding case for the complicated watch covered by its Calibre 31-260 PS QL instructions, not a universal recommendation for all perpetual calendars.
