It is not an automatic watch: a typical VK63-class movement uses a battery, usually an SR936SW cell rated for approximately three years.
An automatic chronograph is fully mechanical. Its mainspring is wound by wrist motion or the crown, and its gear train, escapement, balance and chronograph works all operate without a movement battery. The practical choice is therefore quartz convenience and lower upkeep versus mechanical construction, traditional ownership and periodic servicing.

What “meca-quartz” means
“Meca-quartz” is a hybrid description, not a separate power source. The timekeeping side uses a quartz oscillator and an electronic circuit regulated by a battery. The chronograph side uses additional mechanical-style parts and switching behavior so the start, stop, resume and reset actions feel closer to those of a mechanical stopwatch than to a basic one-motor quartz watch.

A quartz oscillator is well suited to keeping the hour and minute display stable with little user intervention. A chronograph needs coordinated pusher actions, a timing hand and a return-to-zero operation. In a meca-quartz design, those functions are combined in one case but are not powered in the same way.

It is not an automatic movement
A meca-quartz chronograph is not wound by wrist movement. The battery powers the quartz timekeeping circuit and the movement’s motors or related electrical functions. When the battery is depleted, the watch stops or its chronograph functions become unavailable until the cell is replaced.
Why one hand can look like it sweeps
Many VK-series movements drive the central chronograph hand in fifth-second increments. That produces a smoother-looking motion during a timing event than the once-per-second jump of a conventional quartz seconds hand. It does not mean the watch has a continuously sweeping mechanical seconds hand. The ordinary running-seconds display may still advance in discrete quartz steps, while the central chronograph hand moves at its specified interval only when the stopwatch is running.
How a meca-quartz chronograph works
Normal timekeeping
During ordinary use, the battery supplies the quartz circuit. The oscillator provides a stable reference, and the circuit sends timed impulses to the display mechanism. The hour and minute hands therefore receive quartz-regulated timing rather than energy from a wound mainspring.
Starting, stopping and resetting
Pressing the upper pusher starts the chronograph. Pressing it again stops the elapsed-time indication, and pressing it after a stop can resume timing on movements that support that sequence. The lower pusher returns the chronograph hand to zero after timing has been stopped. The tactile click and snap-back are the features that make the watch feel mechanical even though the base timekeeping is quartz regulated.
Exact internal layouts differ by calibre. It is not safe to claim that every meca-quartz movement uses the same clutch, lever, motor or brake arrangement. What can be said consistently is that the quartz timekeeping section and the chronograph actuation are engineered as separate functional elements.

What the VK63 reference documents
The TMI/Seiko VK63 is a useful documented example. Manufacturer-derived specifications identify a quartz movement with a central 1/5-second chronograph hand and an approximately three-year rating for an SR936SW battery. A VK63 manual identifies a 60-minute timer, chronograph seconds hand, running seconds, date and 24-hour hand, along with start/stop/resume/reset controls.
Those details describe the movement, not every watch that contains it. A case, dial layout, hand set, gasket system and water-resistance rating are supplied by the watch manufacturer and can vary substantially between models.

An automatic chronograph is a mechanical movement from end to end. A mainspring stores energy. Wrist motion winds that spring through an automatic winding system, while the crown can usually be used for manual winding. The stored energy travels through the gear train and escapement to the balance, which regulates the rate, and through the chronograph works when the timing function is engaged.
Because no movement battery is involved, an automatic chronograph can continue running as long as its mainspring has energy and the mechanism is functioning. If the watch is left unworn until its power reserve is exhausted, it stops and must be wound or worn again. TAG Heuer’s historical material, for example, identifies the ETA 2894-2 as an automatic chronograph movement used as Calibre 17; that is an example of a mechanical calibre designation, not a specification shared by all automatic chronographs.
Mechanical construction brings more interacting parts and more variables. Rate can change with position, temperature, magnetism, the amount of spring wind and the quality of regulation. It also means that cleaning, lubrication and adjustment are part of long-term ownership.

Accuracy: what can and cannot be generalized
Quartz regulation normally gives a meca-quartz watch a steadier everyday rate than a mechanical movement, but “quartz accuracy” is not one universal number. Temperature, battery condition, circuit design and the manufacturer’s tolerance all matter. The same is true in the other direction: automatic performance varies with calibre, adjustment, position, power reserve and environment.
No single accuracy statistic is valid for every meca-quartz or every automatic chronograph. Use the tolerance published for the exact movement or finished watch. If a listing provides no tolerance, treat broad claims such as “always accurate” or “mechanical accuracy” as marketing language rather than a technical specification.
Chronograph capacity and display details
Chronograph capacity is a separate question from timekeeping accuracy. A movement may keep time well but offer only a limited timing range. The VK63 documentation describes a central 1/5-second hand and a 60-minute chronograph cycle. The VK64A technical sheet describes a 13 1/2 ligne quartz movement with a 1/5-second center chronograph hand and a 60-minute cycle.
Other quartz chronographs use different resolutions and limits. Citizen’s E67 support documentation specifies measurement to 59 minutes 59.95 seconds in 1/20-second increments, followed by automatic stop and reset after 60 minutes. That specification should not be transferred to a VK63 or treated as a general meca-quartz standard.
A traditional chronograph is defined by its operating pushers. TAG Heuer’s official FAQ describes it as a watch fitted with an additional function operated by start, stop and reset pushers to measure continuous or interrupted periods. The exact subdial arrangement—running seconds, elapsed minutes, a 24-hour indicator or a date—depends on the calibre and dial design.

Battery, servicing and everyday ownership
Meca-quartz maintenance
The clearest recurring task is battery replacement. For a VK63-class movement, the cited SR936SW rating is approximately three years, but actual life depends on usage, battery quality and the watch’s electrical load. Chronograph use, low temperatures and a battery that has spent time in storage can change the interval.
Battery work should include inspection of the case gasket and a water-resistance test when the watch is marketed as water resistant. A new cell does not restore a damaged seal. The movement’s long-term service requirements depend on its calibre and the case; do not assume that every meca-quartz watch is disposable or that every one needs the same overhaul.
Automatic maintenance
An automatic chronograph has no movement battery to replace, but its lubricants, seals and regulating parts age. Follow the manufacturer’s service guidance or a qualified watchmaker’s assessment rather than applying one universal interval to every calibre. Service cost is usually higher than a simple battery change because the movement must be inspected, cleaned, lubricated, adjusted and tested.
Common ownership problems
- The chronograph will not start: check whether the battery is depleted, whether the pusher sequence is being used correctly and whether the movement has been exposed to moisture or impact.
- The hand does not reset to zero: do not force the pusher. Some calibres allow a hand-position correction procedure, while others need professional adjustment; use the exact movement manual.
- The automatic watch has stopped: wind it according to the manufacturer’s instructions or wear it long enough to build reserve. A stopped watch is not evidence that it has a battery fault.
- Timing capacity is misunderstood: verify the calibre’s stated cycle before using the watch for an interval longer than its chronograph limit.
Which is better for daily wear?
Choose meca-quartz when convenience comes first
A meca-quartz chronograph suits someone who wants a watch that can be picked up and worn with little preparation, keeps quartz-regulated time and still offers a positive, mechanical-feeling pusher sequence. It is especially practical when a watch may sit unused for days but needs to be ready without setting a power reserve.

Choose automatic when the movement is the point
An automatic chronograph is the better fit if the appeal lies in a mainspring, visible or implied mechanical construction, hand-wound or wrist-wound ownership and traditional chronograph engineering. Accept that the watch can stop after its reserve runs down and that mechanical servicing is part of the ownership cost.
Neither choice is inherently superior. They solve different problems: meca-quartz prioritizes regulated timekeeping and convenience, while automatic prioritizes mechanical construction and the experience of operating a traditional movement.
Buying checklist
Compare the complete watch, not just the word “chronograph” on the dial. Before buying, verify:

- Chronograph range and resolution: confirm whether it measures 60 minutes, 1/5-second increments or another capacity. Do not infer specifications from a similar-looking dial.
- Battery or power reserve: for quartz, identify the cell type and approximate rating; for automatic, identify the stated power reserve and winding method.
- Reset behavior: make sure the hands return to zero and that the pushers operate in the intended start, stop, resume and reset order.
- Case dimensions: check thickness, lug-to-lug length and weight. A movement may be compact while the finished case remains large.
- Water resistance: read the manufacturer’s rating and confirm that the crown, pushers and caseback are appropriate for the intended use.
- Service support: establish who can replace the battery, test the seals, regulate or repair the movement in your region.
- Warranty and compatibility: for a replacement movement or watch build, verify hand heights, dial opening, stem position, subdial spacing and case fit before ordering.
The most specific replacement and watch-building search term for this category is “Seiko VK63 meca-quartz chronograph movement.” Marketplace seller quality, compatibility, price and regional availability should be checked at the time of purchase rather than assumed from an old listing.
Bottom line
Meca-quartz gives you a battery-powered, quartz-regulated timekeeping base with a chronograph that starts, stops and resets with a mechanical-style feel. Automatic chronographs use a mainspring and fully mechanical chronograph works, so they offer a different ownership experience and require more attention to winding, regulation and servicing. Select the exact calibre by its published accuracy, timing range, power source, dimensions, water resistance and support—not by the movement label alone.
