The Rolex Superlative Chronometer Standard is Rolex’s certification for a fully assembled watch. After its movement receives official chronometer certification from COSC, Rolex tests the cased watch against its own requirements. Rolex states a finished-watch precision tolerance of −2/+2 seconds per day; its current standard also covers waterproofness, self-winding, power reserve, resistance to magnetism, reliability and sustainability.
What does the Rolex Superlative Chronometer Standard mean?
It is Rolex’s own certification for the complete watch, not simply another name for the movement’s COSC certificate. Rolex says each watch leaving its workshops is assessed in its laboratories after assembly, and that the green seal symbolizes Superlative Chronometer status. Rolex’s 2026 description explains the current designation.

The distinction is what gets tested. COSC certification applies to the movement; Rolex’s additional assessment takes place after the movement has been cased. Rolex says its after-casing precision criteria are stricter than those accepted for the official movement certification. That does not mean the two certificates measure the same thing: the Rolex assessment concerns the assembled watch.

What does Rolex test?
Rolex’s 2015 redefinition organized its finished-watch criteria around four areas. In 2026, Rolex announced three more criteria for the certification.

Rolex says the three additions are implemented during design and manufacturing through hundreds of checks and validations related to watch performance. Its public description names the criteria but does not detail their individual procedures or thresholds. The 2017 Rolex brochure describes a historical testing method using automated equipment intended to simulate real-life wear. It says the cased watch was assessed over a 24-hour cycle in several static positions and on a rotating rack; those brochure-era details should not be taken as confirmation that every element of the protocol remains unchanged in 2026. Rolex’s 2017 Superlative Chronometer brochure provides that historical account.
How accurate is a Rolex Superlative Chronometer?
Rolex’s stated precision tolerance for the finished watch is −2 to +2 seconds per day. In other words, the certification test requires the cased watch to fall within that range. Rolex’s current description repeats the tolerance first associated with its 2015 redefinition. Rolex’s current certification description states the figure.

This is a test tolerance, not a promise that every owner will see precisely that daily rate in every position, temperature, state of wind or wearing condition. It should not be read as a guarantee of identical real-world performance across all circumstances.

What does the Rolex green seal mean?
The green seal symbolizes that Rolex watch’s Superlative Chronometer status. Rolex also associates the status with an international five-year guarantee. The seal is an accompanying symbol, not independent proof that a watch is authentic, and it does not extend the stated precision tolerance into a promise of an exact rate under all conditions. How to compare this certification with another watch standard
When comparing certifications, check what is actually tested and how much of the method is made public. Useful questions include:
- Is the tested object the movement alone, or the fully assembled watch?
- What precision tolerance is stated, and under what measurement conditions?
- Does the certification include waterproofness, winding and power reserve?
- Are criteria for magnetism, reliability or durability included, and are their thresholds disclosed?
These questions help separate a movement certificate from a finished-watch assessment without assuming that another standard has any particular feature.
