What did Shakira say about Casio?
In “BZRP Music Sessions #53,” Shakira sings, “Cambiaste un Rolex por un Casio”—translated as “You traded a Rolex for a Casio.” The track also contrasts a Ferrari with a Twingo. Contemporary coverage read the lines as taunts aimed at Piqué and connected them to his new relationship; they are lyrics and framing, not independently established claims about the people involved. The track was released in January 2023. Contemporary reporting gives January 11 as the release date, while Guinness World Records describes the YouTube video as released January 12. Those dates refer to different descriptions of the release, so the platform matters when naming a specific day. Guinness World Records’ account focuses on the video and its records.
Why compare a Rolex with a Casio?
The lyric uses the brands as a sharp contrast: Rolex evokes a luxury-watch image, while Casio is presented as the less prestigious alternative in the song’s punchline. That is the rhetorical move, not a watch review. The sources documenting the lyric do not identify a model, compare specifications, or establish that one brand is universally better or worse.

A real comparison would depend on the exact watches and what a buyer needs: price tier, design, materials, functions, durability, and intended use. The lyric supplies none of those details, so it should not be treated as a technical or value-for-money comparison.
Did Casio respond, and was the viral Casio post real?
Piqué’s public joke
At a January 2023 Kings League presentation, Piqué joked: “Casio nos ha dado relojes para toda la vida. La Kings League ha llegado a un acuerdo con Casio”—“Casio has given us watches for a lifetime. The Kings League has reached an agreement with Casio.” El País reported that he made the remarks while presenting the league and distributing watches. This documents his announcement at that event; it does not establish that the arrangement or any sponsorship remains active today. El País reported Piqué’s remarks.

Purported Casio statements
Posts that circulated as if they were official Casio communications were not genuine official company statements, according to AFP Factual’s fact-check. Do not attribute those viral messages to Casio. AFP Factual’s fact-check explains the finding.
How successful was the track?
Guinness World Records said in a March 10, 2023 report that the track set four records. Its report identifies the record categories and measures; the claim should be understood within those stated categories and platform-specific terms, not generalized into an unspecified claim that the song broke every streaming or music record. El Comercio Perú published an interview in 2023 carrying a claim that Casio sales “increased threefold” in the preceding week after the song. That is a reported, week-long sales claim from the outlet’s interview—not an audited company-wide annual growth figure or a Casio financial statement. The song’s influence continued beyond its initial news cycle. In March 2024, the Associated Press reported that Shakira’s album Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran takes its title from a lyric in “Music Sessions Vol. 53.” AP described it as her first full-length album in seven years and noted that it followed her split from Piqué.
