Before paying for a discontinued Omega online, verify the exact reference, assess the seller and return terms, request clear photos and service records, and make the purchase conditional on an independent inspection. A serial-number match, box and papers, or a video showing the watch running is not proof of authenticity or sound condition.
Start with the exact watch and its configuration
Ask the seller to identify the watch’s reference in writing. Compare the listing with reliable material for that exact reference, rather than with other watches that share the Omega name. The correct dial, hands, bezel, case, bracelet, and movement can vary by reference and production period; the available information here does not establish the configuration of any particular model.

Request sharp, well-lit photographs of the dial, caseback, case sides and lugs, clasp or bracelet, and movement if it can be shown safely. Ask whether any parts have been replaced, refinished, polished, repaired, or modified. Specifically ask about the dial, hands, bezel, crown, bracelet, and movement, and request invoices or service records describing work and parts.
Assess authenticity without relying on a serial number alone
Omega’s Hong Kong customer-service FAQ describes serial locations that differ by age: current-watch serials may appear on the caseback or a lug, while vintage serials are usually inside the caseback and on the movement. Omega also says the warranty card for an authentic watch carries a serial number, reference, purchase date, and retailer’s full name and address. Ask for clear images of the relevant markings and paperwork, and check whether the details agree with the listing.

A matching serial or reference is an indication, not a guarantee. Omega explicitly cautions that checking whether the model and serial correspond does not guarantee authenticity. A box and papers may support a watch’s history, but their presence alone does not authenticate the watch.
Where possible, ask an Omega boutique or authorized service center to help check serial and reference information, and arrange a physical examination by a qualified watchmaker—particularly for a vintage watch or one described as “restored” or “all original.” Omega says a wrong movement proves a watch is not authentic. It may refuse or stop service if counterfeit or altered parts are present, and service eligibility depends on the watch’s condition and whether it has matching Omega parts.
Separate running condition, originality, service needs, and water resistance
These are different questions. A watch that runs in a seller’s short video may still keep poor time, need service, contain replacement parts, or fail a water-resistance test. Ask when it was last serviced and request the dated paperwork. An independent inspector can report on movement identity and condition, signs of alteration or replacement, case and dial condition, timekeeping, and likely service needs.

Omega recommends a complete service every five to eight years and an annual water-resistance check; the intervals appear on its Hong Kong FAQ, which does not state a publication year. Gaskets deteriorate over time. If you intend to swim or otherwise expose the watch to water, ask for a recent water-resistance test rather than relying on its original depth rating. Do not use a magnet test as a general authenticity check: Omega’s magnetic-field test guidance applies specifically to watches certified as Master Chronometer.
Check the seller, return window, and inspection plan
Omega recommends buying through its boutiques and authorized retailers and warns that watches from unauthorized sources may be damaged or counterfeit and may not have warranty coverage. A pre-owned marketplace purchase therefore calls for additional checks; the Omega FAQ does not set marketplace return rules.
- Review the seller’s history and whether the description is consistent across the listing, photographs, and written answers.
- Confirm the accepted payment method, return deadline, return-shipping responsibility, and any conditions attached to a return.
- Make sure the return window gives you time to receive the watch and obtain an independent inspection. Agree in writing on what happens if the inspection identifies a material mismatch or issue.
- Ask for service and replacement-part records before committing, and keep the listing and seller’s answers.
Do not let a short return deadline force you to accept the watch before it can be examined. If the seller will not provide useful photographs, answer questions about alterations, or allow a reasonable inspection period, treat that as a transaction risk rather than filling the gaps with assumptions.

Verify warranty by purchase date and region
Do not assume a discontinued or pre-owned watch still has warranty coverage. Omega Taiwan’s FAQ says watches purchased from 1 July 2018 have a five-year international warranty and lists separate durations for earlier purchases. That is regional guidance, not a universal rule for every watch or jurisdiction. Check the actual purchase date, the correctly completed and stamped warranty certificate, and the terms applicable to the watch’s purchase region; confirm current coverage with Omega where possible.

There is no single fair price for “a discontinued Omega.” Omega says value depends on functional and aesthetic condition, supply and demand for comparable watches, and country-specific factors; it does not provide valuations and suggests that an auction house or antique dealer examine a watch. Compare the same reference and configuration, not just watches from the same collection.
| What to compare | What to establish |
|---|---|
| Reference and configuration | Whether the reference, dial, case, movement, and bracelet match the seller’s description and the comparison listings. |
| Originality and documented work | Which parts are original, which were replaced or altered, and whether invoices support the claims. |
| Condition and operation | Visible wear, movement condition, timekeeping, and any identified repair or service needs. |
| Service and water resistance | Dates and evidence for service and, if water use matters, a recent resistance test. |
| Documents and transaction terms | Consistency of paperwork, seller credibility, inspection time, and return protections. |
| Total cost | Asking price plus any known service or parts costs, considered alongside the watch’s condition and completeness. |
Make the decision after inspection, not on the listing
Before accepting the watch, compare the physical item with the agreed reference, photographs, and documents. Have the inspector identify the movement and note condition or parts concerns. If an important claim cannot be verified, such as originality, recent service, or water resistance, do not treat it as established when deciding whether the price is justified. The inspection and any return request need to happen within the seller’s stated return period.
