Ask the seller to identify the car’s documented original build specification and its current configuration separately. Request records for the engine, gearbox and body style, including evidence of replacements, conversions or other changes. Reconcile those records with invoices, photographs and restoration files.

How do you verify the chassis and provenance?
- Get the chassis number. Ask for primary documents that identify the car and compare the number and identifying details across registration papers, invoices, historical photographs, ownership records and restoration files.
- Reconstruct the ownership chain. Check that the records connect the documented car to the seller and account for changes of ownership.
- Match the records to the car. Compare documented configuration and repairs with the components and identifying details present now. Investigate gaps or conflicts before proceeding.

What should an independent inspection cover?

How do you judge whether the asking price is supportable?
Seek current specialist advice based on the exact chassis, condition, configuration, documentation and jurisdiction.
