Before buying a moonphase watch, check how accurately its specific movement tracks the lunar cycle, how the display is set, and whether the watch’s size, readability, durability and ownership terms suit your use. A moonphase shows the Moon’s phase through a disc behind a dial aperture; it is a visual complication, not a general-purpose timing or navigation tool.
How the moonphase display works—and why accuracy varies
A geared disc rotates behind an opening in the dial to represent the Moon’s changing phase. One lunation, from new moon to new moon, is about 29.53 days: Jaeger-LeCoultre gives it as 29 days, 12 hours, 44 minutes and 2.8 seconds (Jaeger-LeCoultre’s moonphase explanation), while IWC states 29 days, 12 hours, 44 minutes and 2.88 seconds (IWC’s explanation). A mechanism based on a rounded cycle will gradually drift from the actual phase.

Ask for the accuracy claim for the particular watch or caliber, not just the collection. Jaeger-LeCoultre describes a typical rounded mechanism as accumulating about one day of error every 2 years, 7 months and 20 days, and gives an approximately 122-year correction interval for a more precise mechanism. These are the maker’s explanatory examples, not universal standards or guarantees for every watch. Christopher Ward’s archived C9 Moonphase manual claims its display is within one day every 128 years; that figure applies to that model and is not an independent category benchmark (C9 Moonphase manual).
Check how you will set and correct it
Moonphase setting procedures differ by model. Before buying, find the official manual and make sure you understand the reference point, corrector location, required tool and any periods when adjustment should be avoided. A common approach is to set the display to a known full moon and advance it to the current phase, but do not assume another watch’s instructions apply.

Patek Philippe’s general guidance says to consult the user guide, move the lunar disc until the full moon is centered in the aperture, then count the days since the last full moon—including the setting day—and use the appropriate corrector that many times. The instructions are tied to its watches and calendar context, not a universal procedure (Patek Philippe instructions for use). Longines likewise tells owners of its cited model to consult the linked manual before adjustment to avoid interfering with transition periods or damaging the mechanism.
Choose the movement and upkeep that fit you
Moonphase watches are available with both quartz and mechanical movements. Quartz may suit someone who prefers not to wind a watch or keep a mechanical movement running; an automatic mechanical watch winds through wrist movement but may need resetting after it stops. Compare the exact movement, its power source or reserve, and the setting procedure rather than treating “moonphase” as a movement type. Longines’ US collection page shows both quartz and automatic examples (Longines US moonphase collection).

Assess case fit and dial legibility
Try the watch on if possible. Diameter alone does not determine fit: thickness, lug span and how the case sits on your wrist matter too. On the dial, check whether the moon aperture is easy to read and whether it competes with calendar indications, hands or other details. If you need a particular case size or budget, filter candidates against those requirements first; product specifications vary by reference.

Match durability to how you will wear it
Check the stated water resistance, crystal, case material and strap or bracelet for the exact reference. A moonphase display does not imply that a watch is suitable for swimming or other water exposure. As one reference-specific example, Longines lists the Master Collection Moonphase L2.909.4.97.6 with a 40 mm stainless-steel case, scratch-resistant sapphire crystal and 3 bar water resistance, alongside an automatic movement and up to 72 hours of power reserve. Those specifications should not be generalized to other moonphase watches (Longines model page).

Compare the full cost and seller terms
Set a budget for the complete ownership decision, not just the displayed price. Check the price and availability with the seller, warranty coverage, return policy, access to service and the cost of maintaining the watch. There is no established cross-brand service-cost comparison here, so request an estimate for the specific model and service location.
For context only, Longines’ US moonphase collection page showed visible prices from $1,550 to $6,100 when accessed in 2026. Its L2.909.4.97.6 model page showed a US displayed price of $3,450 at that time. These are snapshots of one maker’s US listings, not a market-wide range or a guarantee of today’s price or stock.

Use this buying checklist
- Movement and mechanism: Confirm the caliber and that the moonphase is a geared lunar display.
- Accuracy: Get the maker’s correction interval for the specific model and understand it as a claim, not a universal benchmark.
- Setting: Locate the official manual and verify the reference phase, corrector and safe adjustment procedure.
- Fit and readability: Consider diameter, thickness, lug span, contrast and how much dial space the moonphase and calendar use.
