Before paying for a pre-owned luxury watch, verify the seller and the exact watch, assess its condition and originality, review its service history, and secure written inspection and return terms. No serial number, set of papers, seller assurance, or magnified photo proves authenticity on its own. When possible, make the purchase conditional on an examination by a qualified watchmaker or the brand’s authorized service route.
1. Check the seller and the terms of the sale
Confirm who is selling the watch and that they are authorized to do so. For a business, check its identity and trading history; for a private seller, confirm their identity and obtain a clear record of the transaction. Before paying, get the material terms in writing:

- Whether you can inspect the watch in person or have it examined independently.
- Whether there is a return period, and what conditions apply.
- What warranty is included, who backs it, and what it covers.
- How payment, shipping, insurance, and disputes are handled.
Use a payment method that leaves a transaction record. Protections vary by seller, sale channel, and local rules, so read the actual terms rather than relying on a general description of the seller’s policies.
Buying through a dealer, private seller, marketplace, or auction
Compare the specific listing and contract, not just the channel’s reputation. Ask who examines the watch, what remedy applies if it is misidentified, whether you can get an independent inspection, and how condition and replaced parts are disclosed. Include shipping, insurance, taxes, service, and any auction premium or buyer’s fee when comparing the total cost. Auction terms can differ materially from retail terms; review the conditions for that particular sale. Phillips’ prospective-buyer guide advises arranging inspection by a qualified watchmaker and notes that repairs or restoration may mean individual components are not original.

2. Match the watch’s identity and provenance
Compare the advertised brand, model, and reference with the actual watch and its documents. Ask for the ownership and service history, and check for theft flags through an appropriate service where one is available. Make sure identifying details on the watch and paperwork correspond, but treat them as evidence to consider—not proof of authenticity. A matching serial number, box, papers, or seller reputation cannot establish that the watch is genuine.
Ask the seller to list exactly what is included: box, papers, warranty card, service booklet, bracelet links, and other accessories. Confirm which items are present and whether their identifying details match the watch. Missing items may affect what you are buying, but a complete set does not replace authentication.

3. Arrange qualified authentication before committing
Listing photos, a serial number, seller assurances, and a loupe cannot reliably authenticate a watch or reveal every problem. Where possible, arrange an in-person examination by a qualified watchmaker or use the brand’s authorized service route. Ask the seller to make the sale conditional on a satisfactory inspection, or confirm that a protected return period gives you time to arrange one.

4. Examine condition and originality
Inspect the actual watch, not just listing photos, and ask for detailed images and a written condition report. Check the case, dial, hands, crystal, bracelet, clasp, and movement to the extent access is permitted. Ask directly whether the case has been polished and whether any parts have been replaced, refinished, repaired, or restored. Those details can affect originality and should be weighed alongside appearance and price.
A 10x jeweler’s loupe can help with close visual examination, but it is only an optional aid. It cannot confirm authenticity, diagnose every movement problem, or substitute for a qualified watchmaker’s inspection.

5. Review service history and likely ownership costs
Request dated service records or invoices and check what work was completed and who performed it. If there is no documented history, have a watchmaker assess the watch and factor the possibility of service into your decision. Compare the total cost on the same basis: purchase price plus any expected service, shipping, insurance, taxes, and sale-specific fees. The right comparison is between watches of the same reference and broadly similar age, condition, originality, service status, included items, and seller protections—not simply the lowest asking price.
6. Understand what a brand-certified programme covers
Certification terms are programme-specific; do not assume one brand’s process or warranty applies to another. Rolex says its Certified Pre-Owned watches are at least two years old and sold only through participating Official Rolex Retailers. According to Rolex’s programme information, participating watches return to its workshops for checks of their original configuration and components, are fully serviced, and come with a programme seal, guarantee card, and a two-year international guarantee from purchase.

Rolex also says some of its oldest watches are exceptions to the programme’s “like new” performance expectation for water resistance and original precision. Check the paperwork and the particular watch rather than assuming a vintage example performs to new-watch specifications. This is Rolex-specific; for another brand, ask the brand or an authorized service centre what it can verify and what warranty applies.
