Before you pay, confirm the exact watch and its configuration, inspect its visible condition, ask for documented authenticity and service information, and establish whether water resistance has been tested. Then verify what is included and get the store’s warranty, return, and inspection terms in writing. If an important technical question remains unresolved, make the purchase conditional on an independent qualified watchmaker’s inspection.
1. Identify the exact watch
Record the brand, model or reference number, case material, dial, bezel, and bracelet or strap. Ask whether any components have been replaced, and have the store explain which parts are original and which are not. A disclosed replacement part is not automatically counterfeit, but it can affect originality, value, service, and warranty.

Compare the store’s description and the watch’s visible configuration with manufacturer information or a reliable reference for that model. Do not rely on a broad model name alone: watches that look similar can differ in reference, materials, components, or configuration.
If the watch is a Rolex, distinguish an ordinary retailer’s authenticity claim or store warranty from Rolex Certified Pre-Owned status. Rolex says its program is limited to qualifying watches sold by participating Official Rolex Retailers and includes verification of original configuration and workshop authentication. Qualifying watches come with a two-year international guarantee under the program; that guarantee does not apply to pre-owned watches generally. Rolex Certified Pre-Owned

2. Inspect the visible condition
Look closely under good light. Examine the crystal, case edges, bezel, dial, hands, crown, bracelet or strap, clasp, and visible markings. Note scratches, dents, corrosion, loose links, uneven wear, and anything that does not operate as expected.
Ask what has been polished, repaired, replaced, or damaged. Make sure material disclosures are written on the sales paperwork. A visual inspection can help you spot visible issues, but it cannot establish the condition of the movement or confirm the originality of every component.
For a valuable watch—or whenever a technical concern remains—ask whether the purchase can be made conditional on an independent watchmaker’s inspection under written return terms. Rolex describes its own servicing as technical work involving movement inspection and testing; that brand-specific process is not a standard that can be assumed for every seller or watch. Ask who examined this particular watch, what the examination covered, and whether the findings are documented. Treat authenticity, condition, and originality as separate questions: a seller’s reputation or a set of papers does not, by itself, establish all three.
Request dated service invoices or service cards, the service provider’s identity, and details of any parts replaced. Ask when the watch was last serviced, what work was done, and whether the seller knows of any faults. Read the seller’s warranty carefully, including its duration, exclusions, and who will handle repairs; an advertised store warranty is not necessarily a manufacturer warranty.

If service records are missing, the watch’s internal condition is uncertain. Ask a qualified watchmaker what inspection or service may be needed and for an estimate before deciding whether the asking price makes sense. There is no single service cost that applies to every watch.
4. Verify water resistance for this watch
Do not assume a rating printed on a watch or listed for its model means an older, pre-owned example is currently safe in water. Seals and other components can change with age or condition. Ask whether this exact watch has a recent, documented professional pressure test and what result the store is claiming.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Jewelers of America advises matching water resistance to intended use, but the model-specific manufacturer guidance is the better reference for deciding what a particular watch is designed to withstand. If there is no test evidence, treat water resistance as unverified and keep the watch away from water until a qualified professional checks it. Jewelers of America: watches
5. Confirm the documents and included items
Ask the store to list exactly what comes with the watch: box, papers, spare links, receipts, and service documents. Check that the details on any paperwork are consistent with the watch and its stated identity. Documents can support the seller’s account, but they do not alone prove authenticity.
Ask who stands behind the sale and where repairs will be handled. Jewelers of America recommends considering retailer credentials, service support, warranty information, documentation, and an itemized receipt when buying a watch. Jewelers of America: watches

Get an itemized receipt that identifies the exact watch, including its reference where available. Ask the store to put these details in writing:
- The watch’s condition and any disclosed damage, repairs, polishing, or replacement parts.
- Everything included in the sale.
- Warranty coverage, duration, exclusions, and who provides the service.
- The return period, any inspection allowance, and the remedy if the watch is materially misdescribed.
Return and warranty rights depend on where you buy; the rules are not the same in every jurisdiction. Confirm the store’s terms rather than assuming a local retailer must accept a return. Consumer guidance from Jewelers of America also emphasizes clear warranty information and an itemized receipt. Jewelers of America: watches
7. Compare the total deal, not just the asking price
Compare only watches with a similar reference and configuration. Include condition, originality, service history, included items, seller support, warranty, and return terms in the comparison. If service may be needed soon, account for that likely cost rather than treating the asking price as the whole cost of ownership.
A lower price may reflect a different configuration, poorer condition, missing service records, or less support. Ask for model-specific evidence before attributing a price difference to any one factor. Without a specified watch and comparable listings, there is no reliable universal fair-price figure.
