A quartz watch that has stopped may need a fresh battery, light charging, or professional attention—but the right next step depends on whether it is conventional battery-powered quartz or solar quartz. Check the model and the exact symptom before arranging service; avoid opening the case, especially if the watch is water-resistant.
First identify how the watch gets power
Conventional quartz watches use a replaceable cell. Solar quartz watches use light to charge a rechargeable cell, so a stopped solar watch should not automatically be treated as if it needs a disposable battery. Check the model number and manual to identify the power system and follow that model’s instructions.

| Watch type | Power source | What to check first | Meaning of a two-second step |
|---|---|---|---|
| Conventional quartz | Replaceable battery cell | Whether the model’s battery may be depleted; arrange qualified replacement if needed. | Some models use it as a low-battery warning; the meaning varies by caliber. |
| Solar quartz | Light-charged rechargeable cell | Charge it according to the manufacturer’s guidance for that model. | Some models use it to indicate insufficient charge; consult the manual. |
These are different power paths, but both types of analog quartz watches may also be affected by strong magnetism.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsRecord what the watch is doing
Before seeking service, note whether the entire display has stopped, whether only some hands are stationary, whether the seconds hand advances in two-second intervals, and when the problem began. Also note any recent impact, exposure to strong magnets, or suspected contact with water. These observations help a watchmaker assess the fault; no single symptom identifies the cause for every model.

Depleted cell in a conventional quartz watch
A depleted battery is one possible reason a conventional quartz watch stops. Seiko Watch Corporation says quartz battery life is approximately one to ten years, varying by model; a factory-installed monitor battery may run out sooner than the nominal service life. That is Seiko’s guidance, not a universal lifespan guarantee. Some models signal a low battery by moving the seconds hand every two seconds, but this warning is not universal.
Do not open the back to identify or replace the cell. Citizen warns that opening a watch for battery replacement can let dust or debris inside and impair water resistance. Seiko also advises prompt replacement of a depleted battery because leaving it in can risk leakage.

Insufficient charge in a solar quartz watch
Follow the charging instructions in the specific model’s manual rather than assuming the watch needs a conventional battery. If it remains stopped after the recommended charging, contact a qualified service center.

Seiko says magnetism can cause analog quartz watches to stop or fail to keep correct time. Manufacturers identify items such as speakers, magnetic clasps, and phones as possible sources. Move the watch away from a suspected source and check its instructions. If the problem persists, ask the maker or a service center; Seiko recommends authorized service for demagnetization when magnetism is suspected. Magnetism is a possibility, not a diagnosis based only on the fact that a watch stopped.

Moisture or impact
Persistent fogging, suspected water ingress, or a strong impact before the stoppage warrants inspection. Do not treat visible fogging as a routine battery problem or keep trying home fixes; the cause may be inside the case.

Use a qualified retailer or service center for a conventional watch’s battery replacement, particularly if it is water-resistant. The case must be opened, and the watch’s sealing needs appropriate attention when it is closed. Seiko advises water-resistance testing after battery replacement for watches rated 10 bar or higher. Follow the exact model’s instructions, since battery requirements and water-resistance procedures differ.
Quick Recap
- Arrange inspection if the watch remains stopped after the correct model-specific battery replacement or solar charging.
- Seek service if a replacement battery runs down unusually quickly.
- Have persistent fogging, suspected water ingress, or stoppage after a strong impact assessed by a qualified professional.
