The Pemi Ridge Rush is an 18-mile, three-day hike along a section of New Hampshire’s Pemi Loop, not a circuit of the entire loop. In Sarah Attar’s 2026 Field Mag account, a group of eight spent two nights at AMC’s Greenleaf and Galehead huts, climbing 7,740 feet and descending 7,605 feet. The route’s rocky footing, exposed ridges, and the group’s fog, rain, humidity, and wind made mileage alone a poor measure of its difficulty.
What the Pemi Ridge Rush is—and what it is not
Field Mag describes the Pemi Ridge Rush as an 18-mile section of the Pemi Loop in New Hampshire’s White Mountains. The reported itinerary took three days and included two overnight stays, at Greenleaf and Galehead huts. It is a demanding segment of the larger route, not an 18-mile completion of the full Pemi Loop.

The account names Little Haystack, Mount Lincoln, Mount Lafayette, Mount Garfield, and Galehead Mountain among the peaks the group reached. Its figures describe that trip and route as reported by Attar, rather than a universal specification for every Pemi Loop itinerary or variation. Read the Field Mag trip account.
How demanding was the reported trip?
Attar’s account reports 7,740 feet of elevation gain, 7,605 feet of elevation loss, a high point of 5,253 feet, and a pace of 58:15 per mile. These are trip-report figures, not independent measurements. The combination of sustained climbing and descending, rough ground, and exposure matters more to effort than the 18-mile distance by itself.

The group encountered humid forest, roots and rock steps, black flies and mosquitoes, and ridgelines exposed to wind. Attar reports that torrential rain arrived as the hikers reached their first hut; fog and strong winds also shaped the outing. Those are conditions on this group’s June trip, not a forecast or a guarantee of what another hiker will encounter.
How the two huts fit into the route
AMC says its eight White Mountains huts are accessible only on foot and connected by the Appalachian Trail. Overnight stays include bunks, dinner and breakfast, cold-running water, and bathroom facilities. Greenleaf and Galehead are backcountry huts, so a stay provides a place to sleep and meals but does not make the connecting trail a supported walk without backcountry needs.

AMC publishes different measurements for the Greenleaf-to-Galehead connection, each with its own route basis. Its hut-system table lists 7 miles and 3,384 feet of cumulative gain via Greenleaf Trail and Garfield Ridge Trail. Greenleaf Hut’s suggested itinerary lists 7.7 miles and 7–9 hours on those trails. Reserve and verify hut details
Reserve in advance, then check each hut’s current operating dates, availability, access information, and facilities for your dates. Conditions and services can vary by season; confirm current instructions directly with AMC rather than assuming the full-service-season arrangements apply to every visit.

Carry gear for a self-reliant hike
AMC’s full-service-season packing guidance includes a hooded waterproof rain jacket and rain pants, insulating layers, a 35–45°F sleeping bag, a headlamp, water capacity, a map and compass, first-aid supplies, and emergency shelter. Galehead’s guest guidance also asks guests to bring a sleeping bag and headlamp; it says blankets and a pillow are provided during full-service season. Check the specific hut’s current list before packing.
The huts’ bunks and meals do not replace suitable clothing, navigation, lighting, water, or emergency supplies. For a route that may involve exposed ridgelines and rapidly changing conditions, a waterproof hiking rain jacket is a practical category of gear, not a substitute for a complete clothing and safety plan.

Recheck trail and travel logistics close to departure
Confirm reservations, hut access and operating dates, shuttle details, weather, and trail conditions shortly before leaving. The Field Mag outing’s rain, fog, and wind illustrate why a past trip description cannot stand in for a current forecast or trail report.
