On the paired iPhone, open Watch → My Watch → General → About, tap Model Number until it changes to an A-number, then search that exact code on Apple’s official identification page.
“Apple Watch 11” normally means Apple Watch Series 11. It is different from the current Apple Watch SE 3 and Apple Watch Ultra 3.

The two-minute way to identify your Apple Watch
From the paired iPhone
- Open the Watch app.
- Tap My Watch.
- Go to General → About.
- Find Model Number.
- Tap the number once if it shows a longer part number. It should change to a five-digit code beginning with A, such as
A3333orA3281. - Search the exact A-number on Apple’s model-identification page.
Confirm the generation, case size, material, connectivity and region shown in Apple’s result. Regional versions can use different A-numbers, particularly in mainland China, so do not assume that a code is universal.
Directly on the watch
Open Settings → General → About, find Model Number, and tap it if necessary to reveal the A-number. Labels or screen layouts may vary slightly by watchOS version.

From the engraving
Turn the watch over and inspect the rear case. Engraving may show the case size, material and, on some generations, GPS or cellular information. Use this only as confirmation: several generations look alike and share case sizes.

How to use Apple’s A-number lookup
- Copy the complete A-number exactly.
- Open Apple’s identification page.
- Use Ctrl + F on Windows, Command + F on Mac, or Safari’s Share → Find on Page on iPhone and iPad.
- Search the A-number.
- Match the listed region, generation, case size, material and connectivity.
The A-number is the practical hardware identifier. A serial number identifies an individual device and may help with service, but it is not the clearest way to identify the model family.
Physical clues that confirm the result
Physical details are helpful, but none should override an A-number lookup.

Case size
Measure the case, not the display, band or total height. Apple’s nominal case measurement may not match a ruler exactly because the edges are curved.
- Series 11 and Series 10 both use 42mm and 46mm cases.
- Series 9 and Series 8 both use 41mm and 45mm cases.
- The original SE and SE 2 both use 40mm and 44mm cases.
- All Ultra generations use a 49mm case.
Materials and glass
- Aluminum: usually lighter and paired with Ion-X glass. Colors can repeat between generations.
- Stainless steel or titanium: indicates a premium configuration, but not necessarily one specific generation.
- Sapphire crystal: commonly points to titanium, stainless steel, Ultra or Hermès configurations.
- Hermès: may share the underlying hardware model numbers of the corresponding premium generation.
Buttons and Crown ring
Ultra models have a prominent Action button and a rugged 49mm case. Many cellular aluminum watches have a colored ring around the Digital Crown. Older cellular models may use a red ring, while newer Ultra models use an orange ring. These are useful visual clues, not definitive proof across every region and material.
Band compatibility
A band does not identify the watch. Bands are interchangeable across many generations, so the band’s color, branding or purchase date may have nothing to do with the watch itself. Confirm the case-size family before buying a replacement band; Apple lists bands at its official band store.
GPS versus GPS + Cellular
GPS models generally rely on the paired iPhone or Wi-Fi for calls, messages and online services when away from a known network. GPS + Cellular models can connect through a supported carrier plan when the iPhone is not nearby.
Cellular hardware does not mean cellular service is active. A qualifying plan is required, and carrier support, eligibility, Family Setup and international roaming vary by country and carrier. Do not identify cellular capability solely from a Crown ring, a SIM-related menu, an emergency-call function or the owner’s phone plan. Check the A-number.

Feature clues: useful, but not conclusive
Features can narrow the possibilities, but hardware, software, region and regulatory approval all matter.
- ECG: available on many Series models but absent from SE models.
- Always-On display: available on newer generations and listed by Apple for SE 3.
- Fast charging: listed for Series 7 and later, all Ultra models and SE 3.
- Offline Maps: listed for Series 6 and later, SE 2 and later, and all Ultra models running watchOS 26 or later, with an iPhone 11 or later running iOS 26 or later.
- Temperature, depth and health sensors: useful clues, but their presence and availability vary by model, country and software.
- Water capability: Series 10 and later are listed for snorkeling to 6 meters, while Ultra models have substantially greater water resistance and are rated for recreational scuba diving to 40 meters with a compatible third-party app.
Apple Watch is water-resistant, not waterproof, and water resistance can decline with age or damage. Health features are not medical diagnoses.
Series 11, SE 3 and Ultra 3: the practical differences
Series 11 versus SE 3
Series 11 uses 42mm or 46mm cases and is available in aluminum and titanium configurations. SE 3 uses smaller 40mm or 44mm aluminum cases. Series 11 adds higher-end display, material and health capabilities, including ECG and hypertension notifications according to Apple’s comparison data. SE 3 overlaps in performance and software support but omits selected sensors and health features.
For exact current feature availability, consult Apple’s comparison page. Health features can vary by country and approval status.
Series 11 versus Ultra 3
Ultra 3 is a 49mm GPS + Cellular watch with titanium construction, sapphire crystal, a ceramic back and a larger rugged design. It is aimed at endurance, outdoor navigation and demanding water use. Series 11 is thinner and more conventional for everyday wear. The Ultra’s size and weight are meaningful trade-offs, not merely cosmetic differences.

What “Apple Watch SE” or “Apple Watch Ultra” means
“Apple Watch SE” is incomplete because there are three generations: the original SE, SE 2 and SE 3. Likewise, “Ultra” could mean Apple Watch Ultra, Ultra 2 or Ultra 3. All Ultra generations use 49mm cases and look similar enough that the A-number remains essential.

The A-number does not appear
- Check whether you are viewing a longer part number and tap the field.
- Try the paired iPhone’s Watch → My Watch → General → About screen.
- Try Settings → General → About on the watch.
- Inspect the rear-case engraving.
If the watch cannot boot or is badly damaged, photograph the rear case and compare its physical clues with Apple’s page. Do not polish or abrasively clean the engraving.
The A-number is not listed
Check for a typing error, a part number instead of an A-number, a regional variation, or a Hermès/special-edition listing. A replacement case, counterfeit device or changed page can also create a mismatch. If Apple’s page still does not identify it, contact Apple Support rather than guessing.
A third-party case is hiding the watch
Remove the protective case before comparing the Action button, Crown ring, case shape or material. Then verify the A-number.

You bought it secondhand
Identification is separate from ownership verification. Before accepting a used watch, check the A-number, Activation Lock status, whether it remains linked to another Apple Account, battery condition, cellular compatibility and whether the advertised case and material match the device.

Should you replace the watch after identifying it?
Keep it if battery life, performance and software support remain adequate and you do not need newer health, cellular or navigation features.
Consider repair or replacement if runtime has become disruptive, the required watchOS version or apps are no longer supported, the display or sensors are damaged, or repair costs approach the watch’s value. Apple’s Trade In estimates depend on model, condition, configuration, country and Apple’s current assessment.
- Choose SE 3: when price, current-generation performance and basic Apple Watch functions matter more than ECG, premium materials and advanced health sensors.
- Choose Series 11: when you want the balanced everyday model, a brighter or larger display, newer health monitoring, longer battery life or titanium options.
- Choose Ultra 3: when endurance, rugged titanium construction, outdoor navigation, the Action button or advanced water use justify its larger size.
Current Apple Watch models—Ultra 3, Series 11 and SE 3—require an iPhone 11 or later running iOS 26 or later according to Apple’s comparison data. Cellular features require a supported plan, and requirements can change with future software releases.
