Start with the settings that affect your ordinary day: which notifications reach your wrist, how the display behaves, what you track overnight, and which workout data you can read quickly. Then adjust for your priority—convenience, fewer interruptions, longer battery life, or more useful workout screens. There is no single best setup for every vívoactive 5 owner.
1. Decide which phone notifications deserve your attention
Choose notifications for information you want to see on your wrist, and remove the ones that do not need to interrupt you. This is a useful first change because it reduces noise without requiring you to turn off connected features altogether. Garmin includes notification setup among its vívoactive 5 support topics; the exact setup can depend on your phone and its notification permissions.

2. Choose between an always-visible display and longer battery life
If seeing the display continuously matters more than stretching battery life, keep always-on display enabled. If battery life is the priority, try disabling it or lowering brightness. Garmin estimates up to 11 days in smartwatch mode with the default display configuration and up to 5 days with the display always on. These are manufacturer estimates, not a guarantee for an individual watch, and Garmin lists different assumptions for the two modes.
For the 11-day estimate, Garmin specifies default settings, Pulse Ox disabled by default, no music streaming, and no timed activities. For the 5-day always-on estimate, its listed assumptions include the default watch face, an average of five hours outside, and an eight-hour configured sleep period. Garmin does not state a publication year for these estimates. See its vívoactive 5 battery-life specifications.

3. Set up sleep and overnight measurements around your routine
Review your configured sleep schedule so it reflects when you usually go to bed and wake up. Then decide which overnight measurements you want. Pulse Ox can affect battery use, according to Garmin’s general battery guidance; check the watch’s own settings to confirm the available option and its behavior rather than relying on a menu path that may differ by software version.
4. Make activity screens readable at a glance
Customize the data screens for each activity around the numbers you actually use. A runner might prioritize pace and heart rate; another activity may call for different fields. Garmin’s vívoactive 5 manual support content gives lap pace and heart-rate zone as examples of customizable data. Favor a short, useful set of fields over a crowded screen that is harder to scan during exercise. See the vívoactive 5 manual and support material.

5. Choose how intensity minutes are credited
If you want intensity-minute credit based on heart-rate zones, Garmin documents this vívoactive 5 path: Activity Tracking > Intensity Minutes > Based On > HR Zones. This is a specific setting for owners who want that tracking method; it is not necessary to change simply to use the watch. Garmin’s vívoactive 5 support instructions describe the setting.

6. Make other battery changes only if you need them
Garmin’s general battery guidance identifies brightness, display timeout or always-on display, vibration, wireless connections, GPS, Pulse Ox, music, and Connect IQ content as factors that can affect battery use. The impact depends on configuration and how you use the watch; the list does not establish that every control exists on this model or that each change will save the same amount.

If you need more time between charges, change one relevant setting at a time and observe your own usage. Garmin’s vívoactive 5 estimates for activity mode also vary by GPS mode and music: up to 21 hours in GPS-only activity mode without music, 17 hours in All Systems without music, 9 hours in GPS-only with music, and 8 hours in All Systems with music. These are Garmin estimates under its stated activity assumptions, not personal-use guarantees; consult its battery specifications.
7. Personalize the information you see at the start of the day
If you use Morning Report, review its customization options and keep the items that help you plan your day. Garmin lists Morning Report customization among the vívoactive 5 support topics. The available evidence confirms that the report can be customized but does not establish a universal best selection of items or a current menu path. See Garmin’s vívoactive 5 support material.

A practical order for your first adjustments
- Reduce interruptions: decide which phone notifications should reach the watch.
- Set display behavior: choose always-on convenience or try disabling it or lowering brightness for battery life.
- Review sleep: set a realistic sleep schedule and check overnight measurement preferences, including Pulse Ox.
- Improve workout readability: tailor activity data screens to the fields you use.
- Check intensity-minute tracking: select HR Zones as the basis if that is how you want credit calculated.
- Change other battery-related settings only as needed: use Garmin’s factors as a checklist, not a promise of a particular battery-life gain.
Garmin’s manual listing identifies Revision A from September 2023, while support pages may change; menu labels or defaults could differ with software updates. Confirm a setting on the watch if its current wording does not match the documented path.
