The Forerunner 970 is the lighter, running-focused option, with specific GPS-mode runtime figures Garmin publishes in its manual. The fēnix 8 suits runners who want several case sizes and AMOLED or solar configurations. This is a specification-based recommendation, not a verdict from independent head-to-head race testing.
How to choose between the Enduro, fēnix, and Forerunner
For an ultra, prioritize battery life in the GPS mode you expect to use for the whole activity—not the watch’s smartwatch-mode headline. Garmin’s figures are estimates, and settings and connected features affect actual runtime. The available published figures do not establish a like-for-like GPS-runtime comparison across these three options, so they cannot show which will record a particular race the longest.

As of Garmin’s comparison pages accessed October 12, 2026, all three have mapping and multi-band GPS. Those features therefore do not distinguish these models in this comparison. The more useful decision points are the published battery information, weight, and the fēnix 8’s size and display choices.
Enduro 3: the battery-first choice
Garmin describes the Enduro 3 as an ultraperformance watch. Its listed weight is 63 g. Garmin gives up to 36 days of battery in smartwatch mode, or up to 90 days with solar. The 90-day figure is a smartwatch-mode estimate under the manufacturer’s assumptions; it is not 90 days of GPS recording, nor a promise that every wearer will get the same result.
#1 Best Overall
- Designed for ultra-endurance athletes, with a lightweight design weighing just 63 g to help improve performance
- Take on the elements with a titanium bezel, scratch-resistant sapphire lens and built-in LED flashlight to light up the dark; UltraFit nylon band provides long-distance comfort - even in punishing conditions
- Up to 90 days of battery life in smartwatch mode (assumes all-day wear with 3 hours per day outside in 50,000 lux conditions) and 320 hours in GPS mode with solar charging (assumes continuous use for entire period in 50,000 lux conditions) - all with an always-on display, so you’re ready to take on the toughest challenges
- Preloaded TopoActive maps are optimized for outdoor activities to help keep your adventures on track
- Dynamic round-trip routing allows you to set a target destination for your run, bike or hike; Enduro 3 will continually adjust the route to get you back home on schedule
The Enduro 3 is the strongest choice here if you want the clearest published emphasis on long smartwatch battery life and solar extension. But the cited comparison does not establish its activity-mode runtime against the Forerunner 970 or fēnix 8. For a race-duration decision, check the Enduro 3’s specific GPS-mode figures and the settings you plan to use rather than inferring race runtime from smartwatch mode.
Forerunner 970: lighter, with specific GPS-mode figures
At a listed 56 g, the Forerunner 970 is the lightest of the models in this comparison. It has an AMOLED display, mapping, and multi-band GPS. Garmin lists up to 15 days in smartwatch mode, but the more relevant detail for an ultra is its activity-mode information.

Forerunner 970 battery estimates by GPS mode
| GPS mode | Without music | With music |
|---|---|---|
| GPS-only | Up to 26 hours | Up to 14 hours |
| Auto Select GNSS | Up to 23 hours | Up to 13 hours |
| All + Multi-Band GNSS | Up to 21 hours | Up to 12 hours |
These are Garmin’s published estimates in the Forerunner 970 owner’s manual, accessed October 12, 2026—not independent measurements. Garmin says actual battery life depends on enabled features, including activity tracking, wrist-based heart rate, phone notifications, GPS, and connected sensors. If your expected event time is close to or beyond the estimate for your chosen mode, account for your configuration and consider the watch’s power settings or a charging plan; do not assume the stated maximum will cover every race.
The 970 is a sensible fit if you value its lighter listed weight and want a running-focused AMOLED watch, provided its relevant GPS-mode estimate suits your plan. Avoid playing music from the watch if you are relying on the higher no-music runtime figures.

fēnix 8: choose by case size and configuration
The fēnix 8 family offers a multisport and outdoor direction with several case sizes and display configurations. Garmin’s running comparison lists 43 mm, 47 mm, and 51 mm versions weighing 66 g, 80 g, and 102 g, respectively. The size difference is material if you prefer a lighter watch on long runs.
Garmin’s comparison lists family smartwatch-mode battery estimates of up to 29 days for AMOLED configurations and up to 30 days for solar, with up to 48 days with solar for a configuration. These figures vary by configuration; they should not be read as a single guarantee for every fēnix 8 size or as GPS-recording runtimes. Compare the exact size and display version you are considering, and use its GPS-mode estimate for race planning.

- The 1.4” Power Sapphire lens harvests the sun’s energy, giving you more power and time between charges
- AutoSelect mode uses SatIQ technology to dynamically determine the GPS mode necessary to maximize battery life without compromising positional accuracy
- The rugged, lightweight design won’t slow you down, and the light UltraFit nylon band provides a secure, comfortable fit during all of your activities
- Navigation tools help you find your way with preloaded TopoActive and ski maps
- A superbright LED flashlight (twice as bright as the fēnix 7X multisport GPS watch) offers variable intensities with a strobe that matches your running cadence; red safety light mode helps you keep an eye on your immediate surroundings while running at night
Which one should you pick?
- Choose the Enduro 3 if battery headroom and solar extension are your leading priorities and you will verify its GPS-mode runtime for your event.
- Choose the Forerunner 970 if you want the lowest listed weight and Garmin’s explicit GPS-mode estimates align with your expected race time and chosen settings.
- Choose a fēnix 8 configuration if its multiple case sizes and AMOLED or solar options matter more to you than minimizing weight; compare the exact version rather than treating the family as one specification.
What the published comparison can—and cannot—tell you
Garmin’s specifications support a practical distinction: Enduro 3 leads on published smartwatch battery headroom, the Forerunner 970 has detailed stated GPS-mode runtimes and the lowest listed weight, and the fēnix 8 offers more case-size and display choices. They do not prove that one is universally best for ultrarunning or establish a race-tested battery ranking across all three. For an event, make the final choice using the exact model’s GPS-mode estimate, planned features, and duration.
