Why Does a Mechanical Watch Stop? Common Causes and What to Do

A mechanical watch may stop when its mainspring runs down, but magnetism, temperature, shock, or a fault can also affect it. Start with gentle, model-specific winding and know when to seek service.

A mechanical watch most often stops because its mainspring has run down. Wind it gently according to the instructions for your specific model, then reset the time. If it will not restart, stops again after winding, or stopped after a fall, contact the manufacturer, retailer, or a qualified watch service provider rather than forcing the crown or guessing at an internal fault.

Start by checking the mainspring and power reserve

A mechanical watch runs on energy stored in its mainspring. A hand-wound watch needs winding by hand; an automatic watch winds through movement on the wrist, but it can still run out of power when left unworn or not moved enough.

Automatic does not mean perpetual. Patek Philippe says self-winding watches typically have a 38–48-hour power reserve, with exceptions for some models; Victorinox gives the same range, depending on the model. Check your watch’s stated reserve rather than treating either range as a specification for every movement. Patek Philippe’s care guidance and Victorinox’s watch FAQ provide those brand-specific figures.

What to do

  1. Identify the winding type. Check the watch manual or manufacturer’s reference information to see whether it is hand-wound or automatic.
  2. Wind gently as directed. Follow the exact crown operation in the manual. Patek Philippe advises a few gentle crown turns to restart a stopped watch, but the appropriate winding method varies by model.
  3. Stop if you feel resistance. Jaeger-LeCoultre warns that winding beyond the point of resistance can snap the mainspring. Do not force the crown or assume a particular number of turns applies to every watch.
  4. Reset the time. If the watch restarts, set it according to its instructions and observe whether it continues running.

Grand Seiko likewise lists an unwound mainspring as a cause of stoppage and advises winding and resetting the time. Its troubleshooting guidance says to consult the retailer if that does not resolve the problem. Grand Seiko troubleshooting and Jaeger-LeCoultre’s FAQ explain these precautions.

Could magnetism be affecting the watch?

Strong magnetic fields can interfere with a mechanical movement. Jaeger-LeCoultre notes that they can affect the balance spring’s normal function. Seiko explains that a mechanical watch may remain magnetized after it has been removed from the source, so moving it away does not necessarily correct the problem.

If you suspect magnetism, contact an authorized service center. Seiko specifically recommends an authorized Seiko Service Center for demagnetization; its guidance is not a recommendation to try an unverified consumer demagnetizer at home. See Seiko’s guidance on magnetism and Jaeger-LeCoultre’s FAQ.

Could temperature have caused it to stop?

Temperature limits depend on the movement. In instructions for its 9R01 movement, Grand Seiko says the watch may stop below 0°C when the power reserve is below one-sixth, even if the indicator has not reached zero. That is a model-specific condition, not a general threshold for mechanical watches.

Grand Seiko also says that after prolonged exposure to extreme temperatures, returning the watch to normal temperature and resetting it may restore usual operation. Follow the instructions for your own reference, especially if the watch has been exposed to extreme cold or heat. Grand Seiko’s 9R01 instructions describe that movement’s behavior.

Did a shock or internal problem stop it?

A drop or other physical shock can damage a mechanical watch, and shocks are among the factors Victorinox identifies as affecting mechanical movements. If the watch stopped after an impact, do not assume that winding alone has fixed it.

Repeated stoppage after winding or unusually short running time also calls for professional assessment. The manufacturer guidance cited here does not establish a single owner-level diagnosis for these symptoms, so avoid assuming a particular component has failed. Contact the maker, retailer, or a qualified watch service provider. Seiko’s guidance and Victorinox’s FAQ cover shock and movement sensitivity.

When should you seek watch service?

  • Winding and resetting do not restart the watch: Grand Seiko advises consulting the retailer if its basic troubleshooting does not correct the stoppage.
  • You suspect magnetism: Seiko directs owners to an authorized service center for demagnetization.
  • The watch stopped after a fall, repeatedly stops, or has unusually short reserve: Ask the manufacturer, retailer, or a qualified service professional to assess it instead of attempting a repair yourself.

Service schedules vary by brand. Patek Philippe recommends service every eight to ten years in its care guidance, while Victorinox recommends a complete mechanical-watch overhaul every four to six years. These are the respective manufacturers’ recommendations, not a universal interval; follow the guidance for your watch and reference. Patek Philippe’s maintenance guidance and Victorinox’s FAQ state their respective intervals.
