Its appeal is not a larger feature count or smartphone connectivity. It is the combination of 1983-derived design, more substantial construction and maintenance-free everyday functions.
What the GW-5000U-1JF is
Casio lists the GW-5000U-1JF as released in July 2021, with a Japanese tax-included suggested retail price of ¥46,200. That is the manufacturer’s historical Japan-market list price, not a current international street price. The official product page is Casio’s GW-5000U-1JF listing.

The “U” model is the updated version of the Japan-market GW-5000 square. Casio positions the design as an inheritance from the first G-SHOCK, introduced in 1983. Its Japanese feature text reads: “1983年に誕生したG-SHOCK初代モデルのデザインに、先進のテクノロジーを搭載。” Casio’s GW-5000U collection overview also describes the metal case and screw-back as part of that lineage.
Why the construction commands attention
A metal core inside the familiar square
Unlike a basic resin square, the GW-5000U-1JF uses a stainless-steel case and bezel, a screw-back and DLC surface treatment. The band remains resin—Casio describes it as soft urethane—so the watch preserves the recognisable black square profile without becoming an all-metal bracelet watch.
#1 Best Overall
- Shock resistant structure protects against impact
- 200 meters water resistance for swimming and snorkeling
- Solar-powered battery charges itself from any light source
- Atomic timekeeping syncs to radio towers for precise accuracy
- LED backlight illuminates the digital display in low light
The result is a more deliberate, finished version of the original formula. DLC is a surface treatment, not a promise that the watch is immune to scratches, and the official specifications do not establish an independent durability test or failure rate.
Compact dimensions, tangible weight
| Specification | Casio value |
|---|---|
| Case size | 48.9 × 42.8 × 13.5 mm |
| Mass | 74 g |
| Band fit | 145–205 mm wrists |
| Crystal | Mineral glass |
| Water resistance | 20 bar |
Those measurements make the watch recognisably compact as a digital square, while 74 g and the metal construction give it more presence than a lightweight resin-only model. Whether that balance suits a particular wrist is personal; the published 145–205 mm fit range is the reliable starting point.
Rank #2
- Shock resistant 20 bar water resistant
- Stable solar power
- Keeps yourself in time
- MULTIBAND6 reception of six-time calibration signals: Japan (2), United States, Germany, England, China
- Tough Solar ensures stable operation even when using power-hungry functions.
Solar power and radio timekeeping
Tough Solar
Tough Solar converts available light to charge the watch, reducing the need for routine battery replacement. Charging performance still depends on exposure and conditions; the specification does not mean the watch can be left permanently in darkness without limit.

Multi Band 6 receives standard-time signals rather than GPS or internet time. Casio specifies coverage for Japan, North America, Europe and China. The Europe specification identifies DCF77 (Germany), MSF (United Kingdom), WWVB (United States), JJY (Japan) and BPC (China): Casio Europe’s specifications.
Rank #3
- Metal case and DLC(Diamond-Like-Carbon) coated screw-lock case back.
- Face design An homage to the first-ever G-SHOCK
- Made in Japan
- Attention to materials: Bio-based resin
- Multiband 6 radio control and solar power for accurate timekeeping
Reception is conditional. Distance from a transmitter, buildings, electrical interference, the watch’s orientation and local surroundings can prevent synchronization. A buyer outside a practical signal footprint should treat the radio feature as occasional assistance, not guaranteed automatic accuracy.
Functions that stay useful without an app
The GW-5000U-1JF is a self-contained digital watch. Casio’s listed functions are:
Rank #4
- G-SHOCK Connected
- Tough Solar
- Multiband6
- 20 bar water resistant
- Imported
- World time for 48 cities across 31 time zones, plus UTC, with five world-time settings.
- One-second stopwatch.
- 24-hour countdown timer.
- Five alarms, including one snooze alarm.
- White LED illumination with full-auto light and selectable afterglow.
The cited specifications do not list Bluetooth, app pairing or smartphone notifications. That is a strength for someone seeking a watch that works independently, but a limitation for anyone expecting connected features or phone-based configuration.
What the “U” update does—and does not establish
Casio identifies the GW-5000U-1JF as the updated U version and dates its product listing to July 2021. The official pages establish the model’s construction, solar system, radio systems, dimensions and functions, but they do not provide a feature-by-feature change log against every earlier GW-5000 reference. It is therefore safer to describe it as the current U update than to attribute an unlisted hardware change to the letter “U”.
Best Value
- {"bullet_point1":"clip-on"}
- The rugged watch's 45.4mm case is expertly crafted from fine resin mixed with carbon fiber, an innovative composition that is lighter and more durable than resin
- The smooth black dial features an analog-digital display and double LED light feature, for easy visibility in the dark
Is the screw-back premium worth paying?
The answer depends on what you value in a square G-SHOCK. The premium is easiest to justify when the following matter:
- Construction: stainless-steel case and bezel, screw-back and DLC treatment rather than a purely resin case architecture.
- Heritage: a design explicitly tied to the 1983 DW-5000 origin.
- Low maintenance: Tough Solar and radio-controlled timekeeping where reception is practical.
- Daily utility: alarms, timer, stopwatch, world time and an automatic backlight in one compact package.
It is harder to justify if the priority is the lowest-cost way to obtain a square G-SHOCK, a Bluetooth-connected watch, or a metal bracelet. The official ¥46,200 figure is a Japan list price from the 2021 listing; compare the current local price, warranty, seller reputation and regional SKU before buying. Confirm that a listing actually identifies the GW-5000U-1JF rather than a similarly shaped square.
Questions to settle before purchase
Will it fit?
Check that your wrist falls within Casio’s stated 145–205 mm band range. The 48.9 × 42.8 × 13.5 mm case is not tiny, even though its square shape is compact by G-SHOCK standards.
Will radio synchronization work where I live?
Only potentially. Japan, North America, Europe and China have named Multi Band 6 signal systems, but local terrain, construction and indoor interference can block reception. The watch remains usable as a normal quartz digital watch when a signal is not received.
What should be checked on a listing?
- Exact model designation: GW-5000U-1JF.
- Whether the item is the Japan-market JF version or another regional reference.
- Current price rather than the historical ¥46,200 list price.
- Warranty coverage, returns and retailer provenance.
- Confirmation of the stainless-steel/screw-back construction and the U-version specification.
The purchase rationale in one sentence
The GW-5000U-1JF makes sense when the buyer wants the original square G-SHOCK idea in a more premium case, with solar charging and region-dependent radio calibration, while keeping the watch fully independent of a phone.
